Here I get stuck into the nitty gritty of cleaning up this poor old bugger.
I aim to make it a bulletproof beast as it's a backline and studio workhorse.
I also to aim to make it the best sounding Twin in town.
Note that there are some component values shown on video which are not the final values, either intentionally to keep some cards up my sleeve, or as a result of the video being shot before final voicing and finetuning has taken place.

Hey Brad, your ocd getting the better of you is what separates you, Lyle, and a few other techs from the herd of hacks. You adhere to a level of excellence, which is unfortunately no longer "the standard". You are a champion, my friend.

"I will leave what I feel comfortable with" then completly rebuilds the amp. You sir are a real champion. Hopefully the next tech who looks at it in 50 years knows that a real tech worked on it last.

Excellent, those Fender amplifiers are built like tanks! In 1976 I purchased a brand new Twin Reverb, all these years later I still have it and play it regularly. As far as I'm concerned, it was the best $400 I've ever spent!

Glad to see the cathode bypass caps find their way to the fuckit bucket. The clock starts fresh on all the electrolytics now. Orange drops are good caps but they look a bit clunky even on boards where the spacing has their leads going straight down. If the span is wider, they look downright fugly. The price of this job went way up but I predict when the customer sees this video, he'll get a woodie and be glad you went this way.

This has motivated me to fully tear down my dad’s old Bandmaster, god help me. I’m already taking a lot of stuff off of it to redo some mods done poorly a long time ago, so why not go all in. At least in my case no one needs the amp for a tour so I don’t have to pull any all-nighters. 🙂

Nicely done! You are the champion, Brad ☺. I was fixing to do this procedure on my '73 silver face twin for some time due to leakages, but I lived on Fort Myers Beach and hurricane Ian put a stop to that in September 2022. My residence collapsed under 16-18ft of water and that amp is now swimming with the fishies. Watching your video maybe I should appreciate that fate.

@@BradsGuitarGarage , the highest ground in Florida is only about 9 feet above sea level. There are no safe places to build. Fort Lauderdale just got almost 2' of rain and is having major flooding: and the land is so flat that there's really no place for the water to drain off quickly. Floods are always the most dangerous type of natural disaster; no offense meant to FL residents, but I wouldn't live there. Meanwhile, up here in New England we look like we are setting up to have another drought, like we did last year. I live up high on a ridge, and so there's absolutely no chance of flooding here anyway, no matter how much rain we might get. I do, however, worry about forest fires around the 4th of July when people set off fireworks....
@BradsGuitarGarage
@BradsGuitarGarage Год назад
After 3 years of LaNina, we're headed for a "Super ElNino" according to the bureau of meteorology's long term forecast. Normally we have at least 3-5 neutral years between. The outlook does not look good. We'll have unprecedented fires, much worse than 2019 if that's fathomable, by the end of the year I dare say. www.bom.gov.au/climate/outlooks/#/temperature/maximum/median/seasonal/1

@@BradsGuitarGarage Yes, as you might imagine I do follow these trends closely. It will be better for us on the west coast of Florida, but I feel for you guys down under. That was horrible. Whereabouts are you down there?

The customer might 'wince' at the cost of a rebuild as meticulous as you're doing, but in five yeas time when he hasn't had a breakdown or paid for another repair, he, (or she), will look back and realise that you get what you pay for. What your doing is the 'right' way to do the work on a fifty year old classic amp in order to make it reliable and work to it's original spec.
@dcallan812

Why a ruler??? Well that went to pot fast. My ocd drives me mad too and I would need to clean the shit off the boards. Once its been rebuilt you know for sure its safe and works as intended. great update 2x👍

Given the solder quality the ruler may be used as an insulator . A fine bit of kit ( sarcasm). Well a fine example of Thomas' English muffin school board population .
@thpass
@thpass Год назад
Awesome work Brad. I hope the owner of that silverface appreciates the time and effort required for this clean and re-wire. The ruler got me laughing too. Is there precedent for a spacer between wax eyelet boards in any instance? What would be used normally?
@BradsGuitarGarage
@BradsGuitarGarage Год назад
The spacer board (referred to as "insulator" in the video) is a board with no components, installed between the board with components and the chassis. That is it's only job.
@BenState
@BenState Год назад
I wonder if body-shop wax and grease remover would be helpful ?

It would be easier and cheaper to put in an new board with all new components.
@BradsGuitarGarage

The removal, depopulation, repopulation and reinstallation of the eyelet board is the time suck. The cleaning of the stripped board is trivial.
