I’m late to the party. Just dropped a set of tex mex with cat pots into my 1987 Japan squier. Makes my highway one strat sound ordinary. These pups rock!
Doggone it! I bin watching pup comparison vids A LOT lately. This particular show is the one that has made up my mind. Yes to Tex Mex. I know that I will never play like this or recreate these tones with the junk I have. But there's great similarity between all the vast variety of pups available. I'm opting for these . They sound nice in every vid on all settings. What more can a man ask for. Truth is its all about the amplifier and or pedals. That's the bottomest line.
I’ve got the Tex-Mex on my “partscaster” Strat with CTS pots, Black Beauty capacitor and master tone and blender pot mod! I also added a copper coated steel base plate to the bridge pickup which fattened it up, a bit like a Telecaster bridge tone and took away the “ice pick” tone you can get from the bridge pickup! Is now great sounding and very versatile guitar!
Well done bro! I just bought a well used, pretty beat up 2009 Jimmie Vaughan signature Strat for a great price in NSW. Probably needs a fret job! Previous or original owner modded it. ?? It's looking the part tho. The pickguard is 3 ply & loaded with David Allen Voodoo Blues pups & a push pull on the bridge pup. I'd like to bring it back to stock but I'd better just get it playable 1st. Maybe I don't need the Tex Mex pups or the original PG? Any experience with those pups?
Congrats, great glassy tone, so pure. Question: how did you deal with the hum noise? Do you just accept it as it is or did you figure out a way to kill it?
just purchased the tex mex loaded pick guard from sigler. then i found this video. happy about my purchase even though my girlfriend is going to kill me
Awesome video, thank you so much! My one question: how heavy can these go? Are they only good for cleaner sounds or can I put some fuzz on it and sound like Jimi Hendrix?
Thanks for watching. You can most definitely sound like Jimi on this guitar. Playing like him on the other hand is easier said than done. It takes fuzz and distortion nicely. Probably not an ideal choice for modern metal though but there are lots of examples of people using strats in that setting too. Hope this helps.
Oh those sound so nice, I really like how the bridge pickup isn't just shrill and ice picky. I'm seriously considering upgrading the pickups in a 2012 Indonesian squier affinity strat that I just got and thinking this might be the way to go as they seem really quite good while remaining affordable. Any feedback on the idea would be greatly appreciated as I don't know a whole lot about such things but the guitar itself seems like it would be worth modding a bit...
Those will sound great in the affinity. Tex Mex are my favorite replacements. Great playing on this video. If you find a set used you can't go wrong. They have that snarl. Damn I sold the guitar that had them in it. I think I need a another set!
One thing that is cool about Tex-Mex is they have plastic bobins and that's a good thing. You can push on the pole pieces to adjust their height without damaging the winds. I set mine flat across.
I can hear the sound you describe on the bridge+middle setting, but I really like it! In general this guitar has a really great twang to it. Are the Tex Mex pickups alnico or ceramic. I think I like them.
@@perthguitar5160 I've a new loaded player series pickguard stock I put in Classic vibe 60s. I love these and wonder how similar the tex max are as I love the price. I'm looking for a budget gilmour set for my MIM gilmour FSR strat.
Great sound. Would you prefer these over fender American standard picks (for blues specifically) I'm looking at loaded pick-guards. for a late 90's American fender strat. Suggestions appreciated . Thanks
I find that all my guitars sounded good into my Multi FX untit because of the hi-fi sound (Digitech RP70) but when plugged into an amp not so. Into amp needed more EQ tweaking (more fighting with the tone). Im so sorry I sold my Digitech but might buy the Zoom G5 instead :D How do you add the music from the comp to the video? BTW, great playing as per usual!!!
By the way I just bought this The Roudhouse G&L 7 way harness with Treble Cut and Bass Cut pots (thats what you need to shape the tone of this beast) instead of the 2 fender like tone pots which only cut treble for the Middle and neck pups. Cant wait to install it with the new Ironstone Silver pickups :D (yes into my new HB ST-90SA)
I think some pedals sound great for recording and used as a DI. The Zoom G5 is such a pedal IMO. Not so good in the front of an amp for some reason. The Boss Me 25 on the other hand is awesome into an amp but a little lackluster as a DI. I record all audio into Cubase and then sync up the video, taken on an iPhone, using Windows Movie Maker. Thanks for watching and looking forward to getting stuck into you and DefJef's track this afternoon.
Yes I agree, same with my old Digitech RP70 was great for recording but very bad into amp. For home use I think its much easier to have a good sounding hi-fi stereo multi unit than miking an amp. But miked amp does sound better IMO especially when you add Stereo in the DAW afterwards :)
Can I ask you for a huge favor :) Im trying to set my ST-90 neck properly. I need this info as a reference; could you please measure the action height on your 12th fret and on the 21st fret for me. (if you have the tools that is) Thanks a million :)
Sorry Che. I don't have an accurate measuring tool. My kids old ruler is not good enough I'm afraid. All I can tell you is that a technician set up my strat sometime ago with Fender specifications...whatever that is. It basically felt right to me and that is the same sort of set-up I go for without accurately measuring anything. Hope this helps.
No worries! Im not able to find the measures of action on 12th and 21st fret to approx. know the neck angle. It seems as if my ST-90 needs a shim to raise the neck a bit so the strings can ring out better above the 12th fret. Truss Rod does not help when issue is above the 12th fret and I dont feel like raising saddles any more. Will test and see how it goes ... Cheers!
Hi there. Just straight into the computer using the Zoom G5. I'm sorry I don't remember the exact settings and what amp/cab models were used. Thanks for watching.
I like your reviews !! I have a 200 U$ guitar, but she Rocks !! I love her, and i upload some covers with she, i hope you view some and if you like it give me a like or subscribing, greetings
