Today I'm comparing three of my favorites in the Telecaster Deluxe conversation - Vintera 70s, American Professional II, and the 72 Deluxe RI. Each have their own unique vibe, and I've enjoyed playing them all for different reasons. Which would you choose?
Thanks to Fender for providing the Vintera 70s and Am. Pro II Tele Deluxe guitars for this video!

I like your balanced and sensible approach with reviews such as this although ultimately I think people generally still sometimes struggle to decide what to get but I just like the way you present your stuff. I'm now an elderly dude with many guitars although only one Tele (52 Vintage Reissue) but - pickups aside - I personally really like the look of the white Professional 11 and the tone switching mechanism (coil tapping) as it provides a wide variety of tonal options. Plus the cluster of a vol / tone for each pickup just looks cool (to me), particularly on the white model as I already have a small number of 'sunburst' guitars. Whilst I'm not convinced that the Am Pro 11 had the overall best sounds / tones, from my perspective it is much more attractive, even if I was to end up swapping out the pups. Along with the 'sculptured' back, it just looks cool and attractive to me. My only 'doubt' _might_ be the pickups but in the long run that's not an insurmountable problem, but gee I love the colour of the instrument and the nice maple neck. Anyway, cheers. (Australia)

Great comparison. To my ear, the Vintera sounded closest to a traditional S-S tele, then the Pro, then the reissue. For that reason alone I’d prefer the reissue; I’ll play a traditional tele if I want that sound. From a tele deluxe I want that darker, fatter tone. I thought the reissue had the best tone overall too. Those lollartrons are sweet!

I tend to agree - the 72 gets the most playing time. The Vintera is nice, and I need to weave that back in for its WRHBs. The Am Pro II is so versatile, and would be GREAT if you only have 1 guitar; but I find myself reaching for the 72 most.

The main thing I'm hearing from the Deluxe is a bit of clarity in the pickups. They don't sound bad by any means, but stacked next to the lollartrons and the American Pro II pickups, it seemed pretty obvious. I liked how all of them sounded. I *think* I'd still go with the Deluxe as I'm not a huge fan of a lot of the upgrades on the AP II. May consider getting some lollartrons though. They sounded cool as heck.

love this video it helped me decide. In order to put the lollartrons in you needed a new pickguard right? where did you find one with standard humbucker sized routes? I am wondering if the MIM Chris Shiflett deluxe pickguard would fit... 🤔
@AmbientEndeavors
@AmbientEndeavors Год назад
Hey, so glad it was helpful! When I ordered this set years back through my guitar tech, they were able to have Lollar cut a custom pick guard for it. They are still able to do that service, but it's not cheap. I think Warmoth or similar companies sell custom guards that would fit, or perhaps could make you one. If the Shiflett is a standard humbucker size pair, it should drop in.

Late to the party but asking a question. So you're in favour of the tone of the AlNiCo magnets in the wide range pups in the Vintera 70s Deluxe but not the original CuNIFe magnets in the Original wide range pups? Have you tried the reissued CuNiFe pickups? I'm curious cause some demos I've heard of the reissued CuNiFes are they are awesome. I've seen teardowns of the Vintera WRHB pickups and they are the original sized bobbin and design just with AlNiCo magnets. Any of the lower tier WRHB are simply regular sized humbuckers with wax spacers under the fancy cover.
@AmbientEndeavors
@AmbientEndeavors 2 года назад
Hey! Thanks for the note. I’ll start by clarifying: I found the Vintera pickups much more clear and dynamic than what I remember the early 2000s MIM Tele Deluxes to sound like. I simply haven’t played the new CuNiFe Fender WRHBs but have also heard great reviews of them. The original 70s wide ranges (only played a pair in a vintage Starcaster) sounded phenomenal, so no beef with the originals there either.

Thank you for this video! I currently consider getting either the Vintera or the Pro II as I would like to have a guitar with humbuckers that is still not too dark, since I love the brightness of the single coils. My first impression is that the Pro II is closer to having more brightness and clarity (when using them as humbuckers), but the Vintera sounded really great too. Cleans are quite important for me and I had the impression that the Vintera was a bit easier to breakup. Is that so? Overall I think the Pro II is brilliant and offers great versatility with the coil-split options, but considering the price point and the fact that too many options could be a bit overwhelming for me, I'll probably end up to the Vintera.
@AmbientEndeavors
@AmbientEndeavors 2 года назад
I think your whole assessment is right on. To me the Vintera broke up a tad earlier, but I also found I really liked how the cleans with it sounded. And I also found I really liked the Vintera when it does interact with a little crunch. The Pro II is undoubtedly versatile, but more expensive. It's a very well balanced and refined sounding guitar, but might lack a bit of "character" among the other two, to some.

@AmbientEndeavors
@AmbientEndeavors 2 года назад
Great questions and a tough call! I really love the 'trons - for my playing and preferences it might be my favorite bridge pickup. I don't think you could go wrong with either set tho. The trons have a slightly more unique grit and character to them, a sparkle while still having nice low-mid warmth. The wide ranges are a bit more flat across the spectrum to my ears.

I just bought a set of double taps out of a pro II to put in my mod shop. I have two guitars with real CuNiFe WRHB and I love them dearly, but they can get a little standby with high gain, and I’m using 100k pots. For my money, and for someone who plays clean, and very dirty, the pro II sounds the best. If I could have my way, I’d have the CuNiFe clean with the pro II dirt.

Really good demo. Generally preferred the Vintera and then the Pro II. The 72 seemed a bit more edgy but not as refined. Depends on what you are going for. The Pro II seemed a bit uninspiring but based on your comments on the neck playability and feel may overcome the slight differences in tone vs the Vintera? In any case, looking for a two humbucker solid body guitar that is really versatile when splitting the buckers. However I find that when doing so with some humbuckers that the sound is really not that different and not to close to a real SC. What is your take on this? Again great demo and very helpful.
@AmbientEndeavors
@AmbientEndeavors Год назад
Hey Harry , really glad you found this helpful. The hum bucker splitting definitely yields a single coil-y sound in the AM Pro II; a noticeably different tone from the full hum bucker sound. I found the single coil settings to be really nice, definitely pass-able if you're looking for that on the fly. I don't know any split coil settings of hum buckers that sound 100% like your favorite single coil, so I won't claim it does that but they're solid. Versatility is definitely the AM Pro II's calling card. And it's a great feeling/playing guitar.

This was very well done and it shows that you know your Teles. The lesson here is that when you really compare guitars/pu back to back, you may be surprised at what you find at any price point. As much as I love my AP-II, IMO they’re still overpriced but they’re beautiful and feel just right. I own a mercury AP-II and I find those Tim Shaw designed pu to be very articulate like you said so spot on IMO. It’s not a chugging guitar really but other than that, it’s crazy versatile. I love the neck on that guitar. However, if I were just judging based on price and sound, If I found a used Deluxe w/Lollartrons, I’d buy that one. Or one could obviously just pick up a MIM Deluxe and upgrade parts like most do anyway. Those pu sound great! Can’t go wrong w/a Tele Deluxe as I think these are often overlooked. 👍🏻

Sorry about the long post. The 72 Vintera is a great guitar. IMO in any real world playing situation, the Vintera WRHB pickups are indistinguishable from the CuNiFe PUPs Fender sell sas aftermarket replacements, even though the Vintera's are not built "correctly." Compared to Vintage WRHB's? Depends on the guitar. I've owned at 5 Tele Customs over the years: 3 w/ Vintage WRHB, 1 w/ a Regal, and a Vintera. After listening to the many WRHB "shootouts," I hear a bigger difference between my individual vintage WRHB's than between the Vintera and the Fender Cunife.
@AmbientEndeavors
@AmbientEndeavors 2 года назад
Thanks for the post! This is insightful; I can imagine a lot of variance from set to set among the vintage Teles. That's probably what makes some magical and others forgettable. The Regals are great, I have a set of Mojo Tone WRHBs that sound killer in my Starcaster, and these Vintera stock pickups are definitely an upgrade from the early 2000s stock models. I guess we're kind of living in a golden age for most gear, pickups included!

I’ve watched this video loads and I still can’t decide which I like more. I appreciate that the pro II would feel better to play but the price point is vastly different. The vintera has a really nice and slightly brighter tone than the pro II. But I like both 🤦‍♂️🤷🏻

There's a case for either! The Am Pro II is all about versatility in my mind. Not my favorite sounding pickups of all time, but the coil splitting settings give you so many possible sounds. Hi there, just watched your review again and have the same positive views as before. On reflection, from my personal perspective, other than reverb and _possibly_ tremolo / vibrato, that is all I want to hear. Pedals of any other description may be fine and sound cool to various users if that is someone's 'bag'. However, other than reverb and _perhaps 'tremolo'_, none of those other add-ons can properly demonstrate the true sonic abilities of an instrument and its pickups. There can be no debate about that because, in the end, it becomes a bit like 'whose pedal is the best?'. In a sense (and I'm sure I'll get canned and / or trolled but I'm only trying to draw a comparison), it's a bit like religion in the sense that 'Who has got the best imaginary friend'. So, I think what I am saying is that I really like your reviews and presentation but would implore you to keep the tonal qualities of an instrument - IF it is a review of an instrument - as basic as possible. I like what you do, I just wanted to give you my 10c worth. cheers from Australia

Hey Steve, I sincerely appreciate your feedback and thoughts, and the fact that you spent your free time watching my videos! Support from folks like yourself is the only reason I can keep doing these videos. For guitars, I do try and keep the effects very minimal. I agree - if someone's coming to watch a video about how guitar(s) sound, they don't primarily want to hear a string of effects clouding the pickups/guitar sound. AND, as a player myself I *almost* never just play guitar >> amp. SO, because I believe most of my audience is the same, I like to at least show some clips with the guitar in the context of pedals..again, usually minimal in these guitar-focused videos. The rationale is sort of like this: I don't think guitar usually exists in a vacuum, so I want to show it in context, and the "context" that many (definitely not ALL) of my viewers play in is with at least a few effects, to me it makes sense to show the guitar in that context. Again. I sincerely appreciate hearing your perspective, it's incredibly valid and valuable. I think in whatever guitar videos I do, there will at least be one or two clips where it's just guitar + subtle reverb. Cheers and hope you're well!

Vintera had the most character and sounded lovely at all settings. The American Tele was surprisingly sterile, but not terrible. The 72 sounded good as well but the pickups aren't stock so it kind of wasn't on an exact level playing field. Wonder if you can get the Tele twang on the Vintera? Cheers!

Yeah, I tend to agree with you; the Vintera brings some nice character where the Am Pro feels a little sterile. Perhaps a sacrifice for versatility sake. As for the twang - they're still humbuckers, so I feel it's pretty hard to cop the twang of a good tele bridge single coil without the real thing.

Believe it or not, the Vintera is actually the nicest-sounding of the three. To my ears, the American Pro II sounds thinner and lacks definition.

Yeah the Vintera is solid. I like that for the classic WRHB sounds. I still grab my brown Deluxe with Trons most often, something about that guitar…

The correct answer is the new Kingfish Tele Deluxe.

@@AmbientEndeavors if there is one at a store near you or GC try it out. Very vintage feeling neck, Alnico3 bridge, Alnico5 neck both voiced for the artist, 12” radius board, tune o mastic bridge, roasted maple neck. It’s the Tele deluxe gib. The pickups have their own voice and sustains very well. For the upgrades from the AP II I highly recommend. Love mine.

American Pro II sounded darker but has a definite vibe to the sound

Yes and that darker tone is what is tilting me towards pulling the trigger on it.

Great video. I upgraded from a squire with Seymour Duncan p90s to the American pro 2 (and same colour). I’m glad you talked not just sounds but also the FEEL which I think is super important and I love how comfortable the American pro 2 is to play

Glad to hear it was helpful! Yeah, that’s the first thing I noticed about the Am Pro II - how comfy the neck was ; it’s honestly the nicest / most expensive Fenders I’ve owned and the feel definitely stands out. Glad you’re enjoying yours!
