I enjoyed this post as well Brad, thanks! Sometimes modding a cheap amp will work wonders. Many years ago, I had my friend mod my Pignose G60VR and it significantly improved the sound of the amp. I can't remember specifically what was changed but I know it was really minor stuff. Like literally 2-3 resistors and a couple of capacitors. We also changed the stock speaker to a Fane and changed the stock tubes to some decent NOS ones. The amp ripped afterward! I gigged with it and recorded with it too - sounded really great to my ears and got lots of compliments on it from others. There was one weird thing though that happened after the mod. I like a pretty bright sound but even turning the treble knob all the way up, the amps sounded kind of dull to me. When I was messing around with it, I realized however, that if you turned the treble knob all the way down - the amp opened up like crazy and it sounded amazing. I never did try to find out what was causing that to happen because I was completely thrilled with the sound and just left the treble on zero all the time. I would definitely recommend someone picking up one of these amps for cheap and messing with it a bit. Really good value for the money I think and at 60 watts, it was definitely loud enough for gigs too.

The Vibrolux Reverb is a noisy hissy amp with a fairly lame spring Reverb sound but...if you take it to a gig you don’t hear any of the noise they way you do sitting at home playing it. It’s annoying at home but it mine has sounded fantastic at a gig.
@Fixologist1
@Fixologist1 6 лет назад
By the time you add crowd noise and other players, lots of amps become acceptable at the gig that wouldn't be quiet enough for recording.
@mroregonchef

boy I'm late to the party..... fender CVR is one of the best fender amps made, it was designed by the custom shop, and the clean tone is outstanding.... the reverb sucks, the trem is ok. These amps are heavily modified by owners, usually it's the feedback loop that people modify because they are noisy.... but if you look past that they are amazing amps. There is a large thread in one of the forums online that is full of mods. I love mine and plan on leaving it stock....

In terms of Vibrolux modding changing the speakers might yield a better tone without having to open the amp up. If it's the new Vibrolux they come with Celestion Ten 30 speakers which I was never impressed with. One came stock in my Marshall DSL 5C and I tried a pair in my Fender Prosonic 2x10. They weren't 'bad' but they lacked character. If you're looking for a change in tone grabbing some Celestion G10 Vintage (10 inch Vintage 30) or G10 greenback speaker will get you a rockier tone while some 10 inch AlNiCos will keep it clean and chimey. In terms of AlNiCos the Celestion G10 Golds seem to be really popular for the Vibrolux but I'd give Some Jensen speakers a look too. :)

WR - Wah Rocker. Any decent amp PCB has solder mask on the board, which would prevent you from burning traces and half of the stuff you described. You're more likely to burn components by keeping the iron too long.
@Fixologist1
@Fixologist1 6 лет назад
That's true, but some older stuff can have damaged solder mask from heat or just age and it can be easily destroyed with a little heat.

Hi Brad, have always watched and loved your videos . I was wondering if you could tell me me how to add an adjustable bias pot to a 1993 Fender Blues Deville 4x10 amp?
@nealixd.3011
@nealixd.3011 5 лет назад
Most people just do not get it that the Fender "Custom" Vibrolux Reverb amp from circa 1990 to the early 2000s with the white 64 transitional knobs and the blackface cosmetics was NOT a re-issue. It was a Pro-Tube Series creation from the Fender Custom Shop, hence the "Custom" in its name in quotes. It even clearly says so on the back panel. The first clue for folks might be global reverb and vibrato (really tremolo) across both channels...... It's a really great amp for gigs, got one, and is the only amp I probably would not sell from my tube amp collection unless I got a very pretty penny for it that I could put towards something like a Tone King Sky King. In A/B side by side testing it will destroy a Twin Reverb or Deluxe Reverb in terms of its luscious 3D tone and touch responsiveness, warmth and shimmer. Most of the used ones in stores have bad tubes after people wear them out and trade them in, so folks rarely get to hear them in their full glory. They are a bit noisy, so are not necessarily made for recording, but out on the gig you don't notice that and they are amazing. They cut through, sound great, and will handle sizable venues with no miking or line out to FOH. If people want an older style Vibrolux they should look elsewhere, vice ruining them with these pointless mod kits.
@nealixd.3011
@nealixd.3011 5 лет назад
The shimmer can be very sweet and clean due to the AlNiCo Jensen PR-10s, another great feature of this amp. If they are too bright for folks, here's a clue, turn down the treble control or use the normal channel, ha. That is another crazy mod, people switching out speakers all the time. It can achieve breakup at about 4 with strong humbuckers and hard playing on your guitar, etc. Folks just don't understand what this amp is. It's basically a VibroKing with one less ten and 20 less watts. I discovered this amp by happenstance when I was at a favorite local music store in Memphis and was trying out a Paisley Strat and plugged into mine for convenience, since it was close to the wall where I pulled down the Strat. The next 8 months I played this amp a lot in the store and completely forgot about the Strat. I never heard anything sound so seductive in a combo amp before in terms of its touch responsiveness, it could be sweet and gentle or break up nicely. After it collected dust during that time, since most people just walk by them, because they look so sweet, clean and pretty with the white knobs (I have seen them used as props in two movies, in bands with wedding scenes), I traded the store out of it and have had it ever since. Maybe not everybody's cup of tea, but it is just a great amp for what it is. Mine is still completely stock, no mods needed IMHO.

Regarding the tropical fish caps in the Vingtor amp: I have a few similar caps saved from my early attempts at DIY electronics from 1978 onwards, and I think that is a double-thickness red band, so they read red-red-yellow, i.e. 220nF.
@Fixologist1
@Fixologist1 6 лет назад
You could be right.
@wayshot
@wayshot 6 лет назад
220 nF sounds like a too-high value for a gain stage coupling cap. The two caps are linked in series with a 470K resistor to ground between them as a high-pass filter. If the caps are 220 nF, the cutoff frequency would be 1.539 Hz.

@@Fixologist1 yeah but it fell over a few times(DOG) it quit working and now im learning to trouble shoot.I cant find anything loose and the way it slowly faded out Im guessing its the output transformer as the volume is just low it has tone control and breakup like everything is right and the signal to the output tubes seems right so.. Ive learned alot watching you . Also While the you can buy parts for a 1/3 the kits do come with nice instructions and its a great way to learn to work on shitty boards, fender boards are crap and a good way to get the feet wet and become familiar with working on tube circuits.

Wondering about Amp sales. Aren't these places like China, India and Indonesia sorta congested with 'noise' ordinances ??? I know apt life is killing me. Also like the Guyatone pedal. Reminds me of a Dr Q from EHX, '76. Fun pedal. Also love the VingTor. Never heard of the brand but saw they're sorta like a Samsung from Norway. They make a little of every thing. The amp i love. Reminds me of phonographs from the '60s.

Good point. Developing nations have very crowded urban areas too because they all rely on public transport. I'm guessing the future of guitar amps for these people will include a healthy mix of smaller amps, lots of solid state stuff, and ways to "jam" with headphones, e.g. the Jam Hub.

Ask an Amp tech , I was told that you can pull 2 of the 4 power tubes in a Fender Twin to cut the output in half to get a more manageable volume and get the tone that is associated with a cranked up amp. Won't this hurt the amp or will it even operate like this. I think you are asking for trouble by doing this, what do you think? Thanks Brad, great channel, keep up the awesome content

Those quasi-RI Vibroluxes are pretty good, but they do tend to be noisy. I dunno how much it helps, but dude should peek over the forums at TDPRI.com about mods for those and maybe ask some of the cats who have done them. I dunno about the specific ones mentioned here, but I know at least one dude there had modded one to compare favorably to a vintage one lost in Hurricane Katrina if I recall correctly. I was seriously considering one a few years ago and ended up with a vintage Bandmaster instead. I have a good friend who has the V Lux "Custom", though, I've used it a few times, and aside from the noise floor being pretty high it's a decent amp.

Auto-Wah?? Isn't that in Canada? Made in the US? I'm so confused! ;-) ...and thank you for reinforcing what I've been saying for years: Quit (for the most part, anyway) modifying amps in hopes of making them sound like another production amp!! It seldom, if ever, works the way you *hope* it does! If you want a Plexi, save your money and buy one....instead of endlessly modding (for instance) a Peavey 6505 because you heard the design was based on a Plexi!! (Bulk of rant omitted....you're welcome! LOL) Add a master volume, maybe, or something else practical...but quit with the amp alchemy!! Buy a modeling amp instead, and let THAT disappoint you!

BTW, Brad, when that Norwegian amp was built. 110VAC was considered the US/Canadian standard instead of 120VAC. Older transformers (on utility poles) were not yet capable of accounting for voltage drops, so a home's outlets might measure anywhere from 105-125VAC, or thereabouts!
