People are dumb as fuck for thinking there is a objective "best tone" I own multiple guitars from both brands and I can tell you difference does not equate superiority. Its about what you like and what you feel is best for the context you are playing. Don't let people ruin your musical journey. Go research and experience all sorts of guitars yourself first hand.

Very true. Telecasters have been used in the studio on some of the best rock songs. Jimmy Page used them...he didn't always play Gibsons. Same with Pete Townsend.

It honestly depends on what type of music it is used for. Strats, due to their single coils, are better played for stuff ranging from light blues to hard rock (like Bon jovie or Bruce Springsteen) while ibanez is more suited for hard rock to anything metal (such as KoRn and slipknot) BUT... Ibanez does produce rg models with coil splitters that can turn humbuckers into single coils. I'd have to hand this one to ibanez. I'm not really bias toward either one especially since I play on ESP guitars.

SomeGuyNamedJohnny Amen brother thats exactly what i was gonna say that style ibanez with humber is ovoiusly more suited but lets clwan up all that distortion and play some funky blues with a twin reverb ....you cant beat it ...and the heavy metal axe would suffer ...it would be ok front pick up only ..but the fender MIJ still sounded nice with the front pick up sound
@andreil1234
@andreil1234 2 года назад
Well Ibanez also makes now the AZ(s) series which are still very much shreddable but a bit more fendery and they have been making Talman and JS models for an eternity, which do feature rounder radius and narrower necks, closer to Fender but good for shred. Likewise, you can get a compound radius modern Fender neck (8-14" if I'm not mistaken) which would pretty much be in the vicinity of what an AZ/JS offers, especially when placed on a body with the comfort cut rounded neck plate. I however especially dig the set neck Fender models from the Showmaster series. The US versions cost a lot however the S.Korea ones are great and cheap. A good ibanez is hard if not impossible to beat though if you get along well with the neck shape.

I prefer the Ibanez purely because of the humbuckers that create a 'big', 'thick' sound which sounds smooth and full.

Definitely Ibanez for me. I've been an Ibanez guy ever since I started playing 7 years ago. Not a huge fan of single coil pickups and the twangy Start sound. I understand that they're classic guitars and such, and I have respect for them. But they're just not my taste. Great shred by the way!

That was a great demonstration. The main thing I noticed is it's essentially humbucker vs single coil. I gotta admit I thought the Ibanez sounds better for rock/fusion shredding. I bet strat sound is superior for chord work though. Ps Sick solos man, you are really really good.

Romans 10:9-11 KJV [9] That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. [10] For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. [11] For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. Acts 16:30-32 KJV [30] And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? [31] And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Love all of the tones. Love the meat and roundness of the humbuckers natural tone, but those single coil sounds are equally as meaty. You can always add meat to sounds with EQ, especially when overdriven or distorted. What I really love about those single coils is the attack on the strings. That twang, bell like tone as the pick hits the string, followed by that "crystal" type bright glassy sound, is incredible.
@kosherlocust99
@kosherlocust99 10 лет назад
Your sound is so heavily processes that the guitars actually sound quite similar. That said, the strat tone is quite unmistakeable (twangy). And let's be fair man, stratocasters aren't usually made for this type of music. I'd like to hear the same comparison on a ritchie sambora strat. Great playing by the way

The strats sound twangy because of the single coil pickups.That being said i heard no difference between the ibanezes BUT the two strats had a very different sound (the second sounded less twangy and flatter)

it's all up to opinion, and of course the style of music your playing. the fender is more of classic rock and blues music where as the ibanez is for more modern rock and metal music. But that's just my opinion

I'm an Ibanez player myself, and I prefer their tone, especially in this instance. I am not a fan of the Stratocaster twang, unless you are playing a blues song or something that doesn't have much distortion, but even then I would rather play one of my S series guitars. But in the end it's all up to what you like.

for this style of backing track - id give it to the ibanez for blues-- the strat btw -his noodling is decidedly different when playing the strats, his playing is restricted and less creative because the strat is basically a 2by 12 with strings

That's because ibanez have humbucker pick ups, and strats have single coil pups. Ibanez heavier sound, Fender more traditional classy tone. Perfect for clean tone, blues rock, Country. And so on.

Listen if you want clean sound, go play an acoustic guitar! Electric guitars are MEANT to be given all of these effects. Plus i think these were plugged in to the amp , each with the same settings as the other so that they can be compared. ONCE AGAIN, ELECTRIC GUITARS WERE MADE FOR ADDED EFFECTS TO GIVE EACH ONE THEIR OWN PERSONALITY, TAKE YOUR PICK
@JonathanSchlackman
@JonathanSchlackman 10 лет назад
kevin aguirre I couldn't disagree more strongly with that. Listen to guys like Albert King or Cliff Gallup that never use effects. Or jazz players that go for the purest tone they can get. Electric guitars are totally different beasts than acoustics (and classicals are even more different). Teles. strats, les pauls, ricks, each have unique tones- with too much processing (like in this video) you lose the individual magic of each instrument.
@KOISANX
@KOISANX 10 лет назад
kevin aguirre Not at all - To have a discussion about guitar TONE - is just that - "guitar"... If you went into a store wanting to test a few guitars, and plugged into 15 fx .. not thinking that all that gain, chorusing, reverb and eq would cloud your judgement... boo hoo for you😉

Soundwise my opinion doesn't matter (but I do prefer Ibanez), because in the end only the opinion of the player matters. If you love the sound of your Fender, fine, if you love your Ibanez guitars like I do, then that's fine. But, when it comes to technology, innovation, ergonomics and "bang for bucks" - well, Ibanez clearly wins there. I want an instrument that not only sounds the way I imagine it, but that also feels/plays exactly like I want it to. Fender clearly is totally off there for me (except for strats with pure maple fretboards... but these I like because my first el-cheapo strat copy had one and I like the difference compared to rosewood fretboards both in feel and in sound), because I want perfect ergonomics for my hands and there simply is no "off-the-shelf" neck from Fender that could compare to the ultra smooth and just plain "sexy" feel that the neck of my S570DXQM-BBB has. Touching it feels like softly caressing the cheeks of a beautiful woman - it gives me goose bumps from my head down to my toes. Everytime I walk past it, I have to touch it. ;) Sorry, but I never had any other guitar in my hands (and I had a lot in the past 11 years) that even remotely compares to it.

Amazing playing as always Rick! I love the rich tone of the Ibanez guitars with your style of playing/godly shredding (probably down to a combination of articulate picking, darker tonewoods and the humbuckers). I loved both, but for my style of playing I prefer the Strat, because of the tonal versatility of having 3 pickups, powerful tone pot, and with the bright sounding tonewoods. Really cuts through nicely with lead and rhythm playing!

Purely subjective. I've heard Jazz guys play Ibanezes to great effect, and let's not forget that Eric Johnson and Yngwie Malmsteen--shred-heads par excellence--play strats. No such thing as "better tone," except to each individual person's ears. I wouldn't choose the Ibanez, I find them a bit flat-sounding, and the necks are too thin for my tastes. I like the sparkle and twang of a Strat with a nice warm tube overdrive and a dash of chorus… Mmm. Sweet, sweet jazz chords. But hey, that's just my opinion. and we all know what that's worth. Try them out and draw your own conclusions.
@jspartacus

Yep. There's no such thing as "good tone" or "bad tone". There is only tone and context. Instruments are just tools with no right way or wrong way to make music with them. It's when someone uses their gear in an unexpected way or new context that makes everyone go "whoa!".

I think the guitars are both great for different reasons. It goes without saying that the Ibanez works incredibly well with higher-gain, more intense tones, and the Strat works well with mid-to-low gain tones, so it's better for classic and blues rock.Both cool guitars, though I would only prefer the Ibanez as a guitar because it has 24 frets, a floyd rose system, AND humbuckers, so that's really it

I don't know if it's digital recording, or digital effects, or the compression effect one gets from uploading to youtube or what, but to listen to this is in another room, it's very hard to tell when you have switched guitars. So when someone says they hate one tone or the other, when they are in fact so close to each other, seems pretty silly to me. I am, and have been, and will likely remain a humbucker guy. I think that is the actual difference maker, it should be "Humbucker vs. Single Coil" not Ibanez vs. Fender. They both sound tasty to me. More proof the sound is in a player's hands, not his gear.

I dig them both tone wise. Just depends on what type of vibe you want. Obviously a strat does that "strat thing" really well. And may be a bit more versatile overall than a Ibanez rg. But with the right pickups you can coax some similar "strat"sounds out of any Ibanez rg. But it'll never be a strat though unfortunately. Ibanez are straight up metal machine's. They get you right where you want to be if you dig hard rock and metal. Where as fenders tend to have more of a classic rock vibe. I'm partial to Ibanez since that's all I own lol though. But a great comparison video!

Honestly, the more I play guitar (currently been playing for 20 years), my ear tells me the strat has the better tone. Tom Greguric That's not proof at all. Identical pickups, pots & caps, are NOT truly identical. Test them on a meter and see how different they really are. Scott Grove has a couple of videos where he demonstrates how wood has little to no affect on tone...with solid-body electric guitars. Many people can't stand Scott, and I disagree with him on many things, but his demonstrations are good none-the-less.

OddTimeMan Wood has a major effect on tone. It is part of the whole tone system of the guitar. I had a walnut partcaster with a maple neck and fingerboard. Did not like the tone much changed the neck on the guitar to a Wenge neck with an Ebony fingerboard. Made a huge difference was clearer more complex. Everything else was the same because all the hardware was on the same guitar. Exact same pots caps pickups and tuners bridge only the wood on the neck had changed..

Same here. I use a Schecter Hellraiser Avenger with Dimarzio F-Spaced D-Activators for trance like Goth Metal, while I use a Fender strat with Dimarzio single-coil sized humbuckers to play progressive metal and a lot of other stuff. A friend got me a Gibson Les Paul Custom Black Beauty model and once I put in the Dimarzio D-Activators it sang in any kind of genre. By the way, Im using some pretty metal equipment and I play jazz with D-Activators on the Gibson and run it into an Orange Rockerverb 100 watt head and 2 4X12 cabs. I learned from my uncle how to get the best jazz tone and it all about what feel right for you in the end.

+Jamie MacMillan In my opinion, when it comes to highly distorted tones, strats shine when paired with a warm fuzz while ibanez guitars are suited for modern overdrive. And I have to agree on the Fenders sounding shrill in this comparison.

+Jamie MacMillan Not with a HSS strat
@davidwright184
@davidwright184 9 лет назад
+Jamie MacMillan yep. When you play clean you want clarity, responsiveness, harmonics of single coils. Plus 21 or 22 frets are going to richer since the pickup is placed closer to the neck. Some say the thicker neck of a strat may increase natural sustain. When you play distorted, you want less harmonics, natural sustain and a purer tone. The wide flat 24 fret neck is also preferable. I have also found that the cheaper Ibanez necks get get bit lower action with less buzz. The exact brands are kind of unimportant. I have found the LP style guitars to be too bassy on the rythem pickup, and thier compressed frets make them a bit more difficult to shred. But thier natural sustain and mellowness make them great for jazz or lighter rock

has no one seen a Jim root strat/tele/jag here? Fender make great metal Guitars and Ibanez have a great selection of quality guitars, Loads of Hollow bodied, 335 style guitars? Both companies are great.. For the player it is totally down to preference on what shape you like, what headstock/colours ect.. This video is further evidence that your sound is in your fingers, he shreds equally well on all 4 guitars, and those 4 guitars all sound great but in the hands of someone less experienced they would sound shit.

I didn't like any of the 'tones'. However, if i had to choose I would plumb for the third guitar - Ibanez followed by the fourth Fender Strat Player. They both had a slightly mellow tone with edge, rather than just pure edge. I am sure that some coloration using delay and other pedals would improve all four guitars. I am a fender convert, but for specific tunes Ibanez cannot be beaten, so I guess it comes down to what piece of music one plays when selecting what guitar. Many thanks for making the video I enjoyed it very much.
@TheKrou

I prefer Ibanez for all the stuff where an Ibanez actually fits, like Jazz, Postrock, or every kind of Metal, but you aren't going to play Funk on an Ibanez. You won't play Rock'n'Roll on an Ibanez. You won't play Blues on an Ibanez. One isn't better than the other, they're just built with different specs in mind and they're made for different purposes. Do I think that Ibanez will still get you a better quality instrument at every price bracket? Yes, which is why I own one; I don't have the money to spend on a high-quality Fender but even then both of those companies do fairly well with pricing, much better than Gibson and a few others. Do I think that affordability is somehow a substitute for having the right guitar for the style of music you're playing? No.
