Fennec Puberty: Biting and Destructive Digging (The October Crazies)

25th of September 2018
Fennecs get in their puberty around 4 to 6 months old. This phase is called "The October Crazies", because generally it starts in October. It's the time when young foxes mature and their (wild) personalities settle into place. In the wild, they gain fear because their parents will chase them away from their safe dens. In order to survive on their own without adult guidance, young foxes get aggressive towards their parents (or the human foxy parents). Fennecs get more independent (since they are solitary), which brings very loud vocalizations, territorial behaviour and quite aggressive conflicts. Drawing blood isn't uncommon... Once they understand that we won't chase them off, they will calm down again and develop a loving personality.
There isn't really something you can do about the biting and digging, but to wait it out. Daily foxy enrichments will provide entertainment and hopefully bring some distraction from the destructive and aggressive behaviour.
Luckily, these rebellious moments are being exchanged for loving times as well.
Please contact me if you want to use my video.

Canines in general display "mouthiness" if they like you. That is they will take your hand or fingers into their mouths, but will not bite down hard. If they bite down hard, they probably are very annoyed at being disturbed, but they would rarely draw blood. The same goes for Wolves and Coyotes as well as some dogs. .

Ok so, biting and digging part is very similar to cat behaviour. They don't like to be touched sometimes so they bite , and when they do their stuff they don't want to be said NO, which they do get, but that still doesn't change the path of them doing their stuff. Wagging tail, sounds he produces, ear movement when his cuddle mode is on... dog features. Such a nicely designed creature.

@@OpiumBride you have a fair point, altho you must know several dog breeds share more genes with fox or jackal then wolves, and there are plenty of examples of people 'domesticating' foxes. Even wild foxes that prefer the company of humans (like with the guy who filmed and got killed by the bears). Several fox did get domesticated, altho domestication is a very vague term. i mean a cow is a domesticated animal, no way that makes a good (indoor) pet. You are sorta right tho people should not keep wild caught animals as pet. That being said Fennec are basicly captive bred all over the world these days so as far as a definition goes they are actually already domesticated. I would not keep one because i could not offer it the space and requirements it needs.
@ghostedandhaunted4454
@ghostedandhaunted4454 4 года назад
@@OpiumBride but its not being abused, and it clearly enjoys life, watching other videos. These animals are smart, if it wanted out it would get out. For animals like this, in some cases, is beneficial for them to live with a human. Not to mention they eat bugs, which they have to dig for. So their hunting instincts and capabilities are fine. Granted its not reccomended thatyou release animals raised in captivity but if you dropped this little fox with other fennecs in the wild they might learn pretty quick, or their babies, becuase this animal isn't domesticated its tamed. Meaning the speices hasnt evolved enough to rely on humans. There is nothing wrong with this, and this behavior is common in canine/feline/vulpine animals. Captive/domesticated or not.

For viewers who don't know much about owning fennecs, they need a large area dedicated to digging and enrichment (although any animal really needs enrichment) such as live food where appropriate, buried food, or food hidden in toys like kongs, and toys they can destroy. Fennec foxes are desert-dwelling, and as such, they would normally dig in the sand to search for food, including worms, grubs, and scorpions.

Hi! I do absolutely LOVE your channel so much! I am going to give you some constructive criticism on what to do when little Djinn gets bitey or grumpy. I read an article about animals that stay in sort of a people-y environment/habitat and apparently when they bite they want to be left alone. I am by no means a professional on animals but I do read a lot of articles on them. Whether you want to take this advice/criticism is 100% your choice, but I just don't like to see animals bothered, and I an definitely not in anyway saying you do bother them, in fact I am saying the exact opposite, because I believe you take very good care of him, I just wanted to tell you so Djinn gets his way, and you get bitten less. Fennecs are solitary? I thought they lived in big groups!
@DjinnTheFennecFox
@DjinnTheFennecFox 4 года назад
They can live in a group of max 10 foxes, but would need a lot of space in order not the kill each other. That's why, for example, in Fox Village in Japan the foxes are fighting day and night (too much foxes together). Also, male fennecs mostly live on their own. Djinn doesn't like other animals that much either. He likes to have the whole place and all the food for himself. Foxes hunt on their own and only for themselves and burry their food to save for later. They never share with the other group members. They act more like cats: solitary, sometimes living in small groups but fighting a lot if they don't like each other.

Its beautiful. I had a female fox have a litter of about 4-5 kits per year, and her den was underneath my shed, under the cement floor. This summer I noticed that her front right paw was injured and she was avoiding using it. I used to feed her and later her young kits about 4-5 chickens per every 2 or 3 days.

Question to the creator: In the scale of 1 to 10, how painful is the bite of a fennec fox compared to a dog's bite?
@yeeturmcbeetur8197

You might need to specify dog breed. Or just say dog relative to its size. Cause like, dogs range from Great Dane to tea cup chihuahua.

He appears to be desperate to find or create a dark hole to crawl into. Also I am wondering why the owner continued to pet the foxie when multiple times, it made clear it did not want to be touched or bothered, exhibiting biting and snarling. At the beginning, foxie also seemed panicked and confused; the walls seemed to intimidate him and he acted like he wanted to escape immediately. He also did not enter, but instead repeatedly attacked the entrance of his tunmel "fox hole", the very toy that would provide him the refuge and darkness that he seemed to be looking for. That bit concerned me. Unlike your Coffee Time Fenec Fox video, this video made me concerned that the foxie is a wild animal and should not be kept as a pet. I felt a generous bit of pity for it being enclosed.

clips of videos that are seconds long paint a lot of pictures, but raising a fox is different than watching how it behaves in the span of seconds. Obviously, you've never cared for a fox
@DansilSchroeder
@DansilSchroeder 4 года назад
My recommendation: get a nice, big, deep sandbox for him to dig in. Make sure it's enclosed so that a. he doesn't run off outside and possibly escape, b. doesn't lose too much sand

Petting is not a reward. Its an act of love and I think the poor guy needs that more than ever during this confusing time for him. If you are going to withhold love and kindness when some living being doesn't behave the way you think it should...do not have kids.
@DjinnTheFennecFox
@DjinnTheFennecFox 4 года назад
Foxes are very different from dog in their behaviour. They indeed don't see petting as a reward. I think it resembles more something like cats licking each other. Even if the cats where just fighting, they lick each other to calm down again. Also, the line between trust and fear is very very thin. If you would yell to a fox the way you would to a dog, it will never come near to you again. Since foxes are solitary animals, they don't care about staying with you when you aren't kind to them. So we just gave him some time and kept on stroking him, and now Djinn never bites us :)

I just hope he doesn't start dressing like a Goth, get a bunch of body piercings, and constantly whine, "But Mom, you don't understand!" :P One thing I've found is that, like cats, foxes don't like to be touched "south of the Equator" once they have matured. (That seems to make sense -- wouldn't want to risk an accident that would prevent a Djinn Junior or a little Lady Djinn from one day prancing around!)
