A story of one family's loss to fentanyl poisoning, recorded during the DEA Family Summit on Opioid Overdose and Fentanyl Poisoning.
Naloxone, the active ingredient in 4mg Narcan and higher dose 8mg Kloxxado, along with many generic versions, can reverse an opioid overdose if administered quickly enough. Some areas have Naloxone available for free. Google it.

I have lost close family members to fentanyl and disease. I have lost a lot of my fear of death, through caring for terminally ill family members. My dying friend spoke to someone I couldn’t see, before he died, when I was in the room. I had a feeling it was his sister (who has passed), because of how excited he was to see her and the way they communicated in life. It’s hard to explain, but I have hope my lost loved ones go on somehow, and maybe I will see them again. I wasn’t raised spiritual or religious, but sometimes things happen that you can’t explain. I have heard many, very similar stories from hospice workers and others who have lost loved ones. It’s hard to understand why I can’t see them NOW, or for such a long time, but I accept that we, as humans, have limited understanding. 😇

I always wonder why so many teens grab for things off the street and self medicate for such seemingly normal life events that bother them. But then I remember that’s the age you don’t have your whole coping skills together. There needs to be so much more drug education but also more on dealing with your emotions and stress that doesn’t involve drowning them out in substances. Thank you for sharing your story. RIP Ryan

Yes, it’s a time of rapid change in the brain, body, social environment, and emotional state. Yet, impulse control and rational decision making is one of the last things to develop. Neurological studies I’ve read in my Master’s say it isn’t fully developed until the early to mid-20s. Kids who don’t try substances before 21 are far less likely to become addicted. Street and, especially, prescription drugs are so normalized in many peer groups, today. I’ve heard, “You can get it from a doctor. It’s not gonna do anything,” more times than I can count. Making sure kids have accurate information is so important. If you get a pill or anything from a friend or acquaintance, there’s no telling what’s in it, and prescription drugs are controlled for a reason. It’s so sad people are losing their lives to these drugs. There is always a better solution…it’s just not instant. Kids are so overwhelmed and stressed, and fitting in with peers can feel like an emergency. It’s amazing as many of us survive adolescence as we do!

Each of the bios/interviews in this series has a unique Something---King Ryan, indeed. Sincerity of the family's respect & affection---& humor is so loving. That bit w Cousin Brianna & Ryan leaving her door open & light on? Seriously. One of the things I've learned & take to heart, really integrate: Specific importance of Poisoning vs OD'ing. Poison also has Urgency & Consequence. King Ryan RESPECT.

I almost died from an overdose when I was about 30. Even at that age, I thought about how much I almost wasted all the money and time my mom spent raising me. Can you imagine losing a child at 18? I know it's a different way of looking at it, but that parent raised their kid the full 18 years and didn't get to see any return on their investment. I know that statement can be debated, but there is still something in that argument that is worth thinking about. Another poor family. Poor girl @ 6:40..etc... The whole thing is a tragedy, sent over from another country. Ryan will always be a kid in their minds. I agree with the other commenters, he appears to have an awesome uncle and family too. God bless them please.

I don't know why but I feel compelled to comment on this video. I am a recovering fentanyl addict. Going on 20 months clean. I have had episodes where I have blacked out or overdosed. It's kind of a part of using that wicked drug. For some reason I'm feeling like I need to tell this family that when you pass because of this you don't feel anything. You just fall asleep. No pain, no idea what is going on. I'm not trying to romanticize it. Please don't think that. If I could pick a way to go, this would be it. I'm so sorry for your loss. What a sweet kid.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I for one want to say how sorry I am for your loss. This is a very, very touching video and story. I see the love, community, collective closeness of your family, and how great of a support system he had. But sometimes no matter how many people we have in our corner, we can be going through some thing or we can be lonely, or we can be disturbed. I have lost a child, she was 16 months old due to medical negligence. Our children did not die the same way, but they both passed away, unexpected and suddenly. We share that and again; please know I understand how hard it is to lose your child. It is one of the or I feel the worst loss a person can experience, and when you experience it at the hands of others, or of some thing nefarious; I feel like that’s a whole Nother dynamic to deal with. I am with you, my prayers, my heart, my soul and my wish for peace for your family is here he is in a better place than we are. I eventually was able to thank God for taking my baby our baby. I say that because if I would have to have her in this terrible society, it would be not as fun to be a parent, and it would be scary to be a parent, and our children are scared to even go to school and to go to the movies with their friends or ride their bikes, like we used to be able to to the corner store. So I’m happy my baby is with her heavenly father, and, if king Ryan was going through anything, he’s not going through that now. He is more of an angel and more of a powerful source of peace for your family. Then he could’ve been here on earth and that’s just my belief. This is what gets me through. My faith in my thoughts that we don’t need to ask why because why causes confusion and confusion causes pain. That statement came from Joyce Meyer when I asked her to pray for me when I was in a really dark place after my daughter passed away. She passed away, and a month later her father, my ex-husband, and I got a divorce because he tried to kill me by his hands. Therefore, know that there are many of us who understand the loss, and we have been through things that are so painful. I don’t know what to do with the pain, but we need to give it to God, because our higher power is the only power that can help us with that pain and open our eyes, perspective, and insight.

I don't blame this young man for what happened to him it's the cultural that makes drug use seem cool from social media, to rappers etc. It's important to pray more for the youth and to not judge them so harshly when they do come to you and open up about their issues. This is just a constant reminder to have open dialogue with the youth no matter how harsh their truth is listen to them and understand that the youth today is facing a lot more temptation and drugs then we have when we were their age. God bless this young man's soul may he rest in peace he seemed like he was well loved and appreciated.
