But the conversation isn’t just about celebrity brands and the concept of supporting brands that play in ur face while being extra critical of black owned brands isn’t new. I'm gonna get a lot of hate for this but I'm no longer buying hair & skincare products that aren't from a salon range. Salon visits are too expensive to be letting these brands play in my hair. Many of these celebrity lines aren't remarkable & are essentially glorified drugstore products, probably worse. I don't think my decision stems from being anti-black woman, but I don't like when my existence as a black woman is used against me to make me participate in a hypercapitalist society. I'm sorry but being forced to participate in a capitalist society to prove our beauty/worth is not gonna liberate us. It actually puts a lot of pressure on us to support, in a way that white women or other races of women don't have to. I'm also tired of pocket-watching black people, like who cares how they spend their money? If buying a Louis V bag is what brings you happiness vs shilling out money to the beauty industry then that's your business. My solution to this is to just become a conscious shopper & shop based on my unique individual needs as a woman 1st, even though I'm a black woman, finding what works, sticking to it, & repurchasing, sometimes that means skipping out on things. I think celebrities, especially black women celebrities, are a little too comfortable marketing to us, while not addressing the individuality of black hair. Yea, Rih is going to make this "for all hair types" but you KNOW who the marketing team is betting on to support her, US. So yea, I say all that to say that black women creators aren't entitled to my money simply bc they are black women & are selling something to me. It has to truly be for me. Same as black men aren't entitled to me simply bc I'm black. These companies, brands, celebrities have to fight for our dollars. If she flops bc black women didn't support her then that's really not our problem, that's Rih & her marketing team's problem & they better come correct next time. But please let's stop acting like we are the least desirable & marketable race of women bc we aren't out here supporting brands like Cecred & Fenty Hair. It's deeper than hair. Do what you feel is best as always, but let's not get too political & "black woman this & that" about it bc they are billionaires at the end of the day & they will be alright if we don't buy their products.
@Shanygne
@Shanygne 2 месяца назад
Everything you said can be applied to most if not all major non black brands and y’all keep zeroing in on celebrity brand celebrity brand when I said it’s done to black brands/owners in general. And lol yeah white woman and women of other races aren’t pressured/feel the need to support their own or be more picky with who they support because they … already support their own/are the target audience for most of the brands. They are very rarely intentionally shown products/brands are not for them. Baby it’s ur money, spend it how you want but ppl who freely spend their money with brands that openly play in their face and then often complain about it (emphasis on then complain about it) but have a Declaration of Independence long reasons why they’re they’re skeptical and black owned brands to need to fight and prove etc. will always be weird and counterproductive to me and often times it rarely stops there.

Girl this rant was unnecessary and you have alot to unlearn and relearn. Black people in general just lack self awareness and would find the world of excuses to not support their own. Non black women don't feel pressured because they generally support their own races way more than they do other races. Ive been friends with mainly non black women and girl I've seen it. They naturally stick together and black people are mostly lagging behind. But whatever.

You said everything I thought. Some of the pushback isn't new considering it's the same critiques when Fenty Skin launched. "Oh, she's not an expert. I think it's fair to say Rihanna has built a stable solid brand where it isn't just stans that buy the products. I also think it's fair to say she's built trust among consumers with both Fenty Beauty and Skin, so why would Fenty Hair be any different. I won't be rushing out to buy any products, but I'm intrigued to see what she'll be offering.

But ppl are still buying makeup and hair products. I’m not talking about ppl that are choosing to spend less in general because they’re spending less in general. Business are here to make money, but the majority of celebs are just putting their name and face on a line. I would not be surprised if Rihanna helps with color selection and is part of the approval process because it needs to feel like it comes from her, and for the most part they do a good job with that, but she’s not in the kitchen whipping up shampoo and conditioner. Kendo is behind her brand and LVMH are behind them and they have an entire R&D team who develop and formulate these products. From my experience traditional beauty/hair brands really focus on ensuring the products work vs just trying to sell you on a celebrity name. Fenty was innovative in terms of the range of foundation they came out the gate with, but I haven’t been that impressed since then.

@Shanygne 2 месяца назад
Well any brand can slap their name onto anything and sell it to you if they have the money regardless of quality. The celebrity brands still have teams like the other brands though in place meant to ensure products are of quality too so shouldn’t it come down to what the actual brand puts out and not who’s behind it because with the same train of thought 2/3s of beauty executives in the beauty industry are men who don’t wear makeup don’t wear wigs don’t do wash n gos etc. they hire people who figure it out for them. The owner of Ebin Nee York is a man who’s employees have outed how the company feels and treats its main demographic yet there are bw still saying they’re not gonna stop using it. So that’s my point won’t stop giving money to companies that blatantly disrespect them but can name all the reasons they won’t buy something before even knowing what it is. Also my comments weren’t exclusive to celebrity owned brands it’s black owned brands in general. Black restaurants black entertainers, black content creators, small black businesses the list goes on.

I do agree with this for the most part. But I do think there’s an additional layer. Generally speaking, I do think there’s a different and harder level of standards when a public figure or the owner is the face of their own brand. Even consider all the black products in Target, we grabbed Mielle, Camille rose, tgin, etc without seeing the owners hair but tph had some skepticism. I also don’t know if Fenty designer fashion line is the best example in this argument because it was stated it was discontinued due to low sales and speculated in articles that the low sales was due to her fan base largely not being the demographic for that price point. Nonetheless, imma test out this hair care line and don’t support the purely ignorant comments but to each their own.
@Shanygne
@Shanygne 2 месяца назад
No I mentioned Fentys designer line for a reason. Her fans weren’t her target audience for that line. Ppl that could afford luxury clothing were the target audience same way Ivy Parks target audience were athletic wearers not Beyoncé music listeners. Their celebrity would hopefully bring in costumers as well but they had specific target audiences just like other brands and just like savage x fenty has a different target audience than fenty beauty. I know fashion designers/stylists irl (black ones at that) that said Fenty was intentionally being ignored because they didn’t Rihanna coming into their space. Which is the same thing said about Kanye and Yeezy. Consumers who purchase from other lvmh brands were also saying they’re not spending that type of money on a fashion line from Rihanna. But Victoria Beckham and The Olsen twins have lines that costs 3x as much and The row gets recommended amongst bw in luxury fashion content often. Also it’s done to black owned brands as a whole not just celebrity black owned brands. One person said something (incorrect) about the honeypot a few years back and hundreds of ppl took it and ran with it calling for ppl to stop buying it and for it to be taken off shelves to name an example.

The way I see it, the people who are complaining that she will not do well in hair care because she wears wigs and weaves are the same people who don’t take care of their hair underneath their own wigs and weaves. If you wear protective styles often you know your hair still requires good products or it will dry up and break off.

When it came to Mary J.’s collaboration with Giuseppe Zanotti, it was no surprise to me that that collaboration came because if you are a true Mary fan, she always sang about her Giuseppe’s! I expected nothing less. The fact that people said that about the boots was not a surprise, neither was it a surprise that they sold out. As far as Rihanna doing Fenty Hair, do it. Please do it. We are our own worse enemies at times. Just as sure as they will go buy Olaplex, they can support Rih like they did Bey, Taraji, and Tracee just to name a few. If not, hey, it’s cool. It’s your choice, and your coin. ❤

They always will have one standard for Beyoncé in all her achievements and proving herself time and time again. I can’t count how many times I heard “well it’s not that I don’t like Beyoncé, I just haven’t seen her real hair” no…you’ve seen it and since she’s not bald like you and your mama you have these excuses. Rihanna has worn more extravagant wigs than any artist maybe only behind Nicki Minaj. Even her short haircuts were wigs. Let’s stop with the bs

The “xyz companies don’t have to prove anything so why should her” comments are dishonest . Celebrity brands aren’t like regular brands. Why do you think all those brands give celebrities endorsement deals? Most of those hair brands were created by actual chemists or people who have a lot of experience and credentials. Many of them were for professional use only at first. Celebrities are known to sell whatever just for their fans to buy it. Of course other people are going to question the intention and the quality. “Is it a cash grab or is it a good product?” For that, they will simply wait for reviews. A celebrity doesn’t necessarily need the product to be good for it to sell. Having a famous face on it will guarantee the product sells better. It’s basic marketing.
@Shanygne

Conversations on black businesses not just black celebrities. Multiple examples even through out the comments on how it’s done to black businesses not just ones owned by celebrities and those are being ignored just to focus on the black celebrity ones but even with that logic the non black celebrities ones don’t require as much credentials and credibility for y’all to buy it either. Which is the point. Not the fact that there’s skepticism but the fact that skepticism a lack of grace etc. is more prominent with black businesses. Do you often hear this is why I don’t shop man woman Asian Latino middle eastern straight gender fluid queer or any other identifier after a customer has a grievance?

@@Shanygne- whether one likes Beyonce or Rihanna as people or artists or not, the one thing that cannot be denied is that they are both hard workers. But blk women are still quick to accuse them of a lack of integrity because they 'slap their name on their products' - without one iota of proof of such a claim.

I will say that I’m glad more conversation is happening about the instant “hate train” anytime celeb BW launch anything. And it’s always from BW, like it’s fine if you don’t want to buy cool, but purposely trying to sink brands before they launch is disgusting. They tried it with Cecred and WYN and I’m glad both brands have prevailed. Especially because both founders didn’t make their brand selling point on “relatability” but rather product functionality.

too me it's quite simple. If it's for you, make the purchase. If it's not, keep it pushing !!!!! The hate is REAL. Sweet geezus. People will support everyone except our own . My mother made "home made" cakes from scratch. Folks wanted them cakes but wanted to haggle the price and the thing is she didn't charge nowhere near what she should have. But when they went to the "other" business, they paid the high a$$ prices and then complained about how the cakes were "dry" and "tasteless". Lord, i just can"t.....

I don't agree on the point you made about WIN Beauty and Rihanna's hair vs. the owners of the other companies. Rihanna and Serena are known for being a singer and athelete, respectively. Their main expertise doesn't lie in the products they're developing/selling. No, you don't know the owners of Olaplex and the likes, but you kind of assume they know what they're doing because you don't know any better. That being said, I am open to trying Fenty Hair because I trust Rihanna to not attach her name to subpar products.
@Shanygne
@Shanygne 2 месяца назад
Why would just assume other owners know what they’re doing and the likes as opposed to the possibility that others owners simply had the money to start a company like Serena and Rihanna and hired ppl who know what they’re doing to run it which is what a lot of ppl with money (especially generationally) do because it’s a lucrative industry? Like the example of Ebin New York. Owned by an Asian man with products heavily marketed/purchased by black women meanwhile black employees are coming out saying how the company treats/thinks of black ppl?

Honestly, I feel like people should give grace to Rihanna and Beyonce about how they choose to wear their natural hair. These women have been celebrities prior to even the Natural trend being a thing. I remember in elementary, middle, and high school "perms" were in and during that time in my life they were successful and on tour. I think back then it was a lot harder now to find stylist that knew how to manage their hair. Also the products we know and love today weren't always around decades ago. My go to style when I vacation is not my natural curls it's usually braids. Especially with the amount of concerts and interviews and more over the years we all know natural hair has its BOMB days and its OMG PLEASE WORK WITH ME days. I feel like they didn't have room for error to not look put together which is why they probably didn't show too much natural hair. Also I think it could be something they keep to themselves like Ariana grande has done. She really only lets close people see her with her natural hair. For a long time she only felt comfortable showing off her statement hair which was a ponytail due to hiding damaged hair. Beyonce and Rihanna are both mothers and I myself haven't had a child but I have friends who have and they say their hair fell out or changed pattern. Natural hair is a challenge especially if you haven't mastered it. I think we should let the products speak for themselves.

I don't understand the comments that say when people think of Rihanna they dont' think of hair. When I was a short hair queen, Rihanna was my and many other Hair Inspiration. You couldn't open up a Hype Hair magazine or BHM without Rihanna being in the book, or mostly on the cover. When you switch up your hair as much as she does, it takes ALOT of maintenance, products. Strength and repair is of the upmost importance. SO I AM HERE FOR IT!

The difference is fenty is not black owned though. It is owned by LVMH. Rihanna and Beyo ce attach their image to the brand, he certainly why people might be critiquing the effectiveness of the haircare they are trying to sell people. I think those points are valid. These aren't just any black owned companies. Perhaps they could distance their image from the products. I'm not a marketing guru but this might be the issue.

A lot of people are saying that Rihanna doesn’t wear her natural hair so they not interested.. Now I have a question for those people.. When you buy black hair products from drug stores and the owners are of different race are they using the products that they sell? and products for black hair do you know who’s the owner of these products ? But you still buy the products from people of different races that are selling these products 🤔
