I don't think Mitski knows how to make a bad song

I've been watching a lot of reactions to TLIIASAW but this is definitely the one I've enjoyed the most I share a lot of your thoughts on many of the songs. I have some friends who listen to Mitski but I don't like to get too "nerdy" about what I think deeply about each song, so watching this was so nice!

I wish I could just restart and listen to this album for the first time again. idc that it was like a month ago. The emotions I felt while listening to it that night were so violently intense, and I just BAWLED the whole time. I was even too scared to listen to it again for awhile bc it made me a lil too emotional. I loved your commentary on everything sm!! I definitely felt that "country sound" you mentioned. It's that kinda,, twangy???? string instrument in the back that I totally forget the name of, but I definitely loved it.

This Album Came Out A Few Weeks Before My Best Friend Passed Away And I Only Got To Listening To It After The Fact. “You’re My Best Friend, Now I’ve Got No One To Tell How I Lost My Best Friend” Was One Of The First Lines That I Heard Of The Album And It’s Really Hit Me Hard. It’s So Simple, But It Just Manages To Hurt So Much.

I don’t like my mind and When Memories Snow are like the same song. “I Don’t Like my Mind” is like the quiet part you don’t say out loud about and “When Memories Snow” is almost like a Denial followed by a mental breakdown

my love mine all mine and star have been helping me through my amicable breakup in a way i can't even describe- the whole album really has helped me process and have peace with some really complicated feelings. i absolutely love this album

they’re truly the perfect songs for that, especially Star 😭 i remember having the same experience with I Guess when laurel hell came out and i was in the depths of processing my own breakup. i love how mitski’s music is like a hand to hold through some of the hardest times in our lives. sending lots of love and healing vibes for you 🙏

Thank you for sharing your reaction to this outstanding album - this music feels so much rawer in comparison to her other albums; it's so blunt and real, which I think just makes it that bit more beautiful x (I fear that it's her best album)
@rowanfox
@rowanfox 10 месяцев назад
i agree it does feel more raw, there’s a vulnerability to it that’s just a little bit elevated from her previous albums imo (she’s always been vulnerable in her music ofc but there’s something really special about this album in particular i think)

I felt as if over the past few years, I've been growing more and more distant to my friend to the point of such painful loneliness and isolation. While it wasn't exactly what Mitski was writing about, when I heard The Frost for the first time, that song brought it all out and had me bawling for hours

My love makes me sob everytime because I immediately thought of sisterly love and I have a twin sister who LOOOVES Mitski (more than me). Everytime I hear the song I just think of her and how much I would do anything in this world to gaurantee shes always happy :'). This album makes me bawl so much

this is so sweet, i love this 😭 also very interesting that this is now the second comment i’ve gotten connecting the song to familial love! i wonder how many other folks see it this way! i hadn’t thought of the song in that way initially but i can totally see it :’)
@thesupersofeya

:'') ugh I love music bc of that, so many ways ppl connect to a song. I recently got engaged and can also totally see the romantic side of this song as well but its so interesting that familial is what first jumped out at me. @@rowanfox

Love your breakdowns of these songs, I feel like you have all the same emotional understandings of the lyrics I had when I first listened. As an oldest sister who is also very motherly to my siblings, My Love Mine All Mine feels very maternal to me, especially the second chorus. But as a bi/lesbian girl, it can also feel romantic 😂

42:21 for me The Archer ends with so much hope, whereas I'm your man is despondent... They both defo have a very reflective quality I feel like mirrorball is a mirror image of this though, with one person being the perfect people pleaser, and the other screwing up and feeling immense guilt

I loved this reaction video as a fellow feral mitski fan! Especially the post-video notes. You really felt and absorbed the songs and their meanings in its entirety. I already knew from the beginning clips that your reactions were gonna be equally as visceral as mine. I also have to say that I think this is the album that has the most number of title drops in the first word or verse. I picked up on the heavy country theme as well. Didn't love it at first but it gives the songs an extra **umph** on top of Mitski's already stellar songwriting and the phenomenal orchestrations. I always develop a slow burn love for Mitski's song except for the ones in Be The Cowboy, which is my most favorite album to date with this one coming second. Here's my personal list, it's a little different because I can't put one song a number high above the other: High ranking: • Heaven - cause everything about it felt literally heavenly and I felt like I was ascending • When Memories Snow - something about the kind of off-putting menacing chords and the theatrics in the second half really got me groovy. It hit me like the second half of Happy • Star - I feel like it's so rare for me to come across songs that "commemorate" a past relationship the way this does. I definitely relate to it, having said stuff in the past that went like: "regardless of what happens in the future, and if our future selves can't stand the sight of each other. I'll always hold the "us" who were together in this moment and fell heart first in each other's arms close to my heart." This song feels like exactly that. "I'll keep a leftover light burning so you can keep looking up, isn't that worth holding on?" Mitski how dare you. • The Deal - I mean... Lol. I've always had this thought that if I was me, but with the soul/mind/personality of someone else that I would not be having trouble navigating through life. Feeling like my soul is a liability. Trying to change negative habits and failing, and start thinking that these negative traits are intrinsic to my personhood and that I can only become better if I somehow took away my personhood, my soul. "I'd give it just to give/ and all that I'd take are the consequences" being so desperate to be rid of your soul because you feel like it's a hindrance. Usually deals with devils or nonhuman entities have a "you ask what I'll give you, and I'll take something from you in return" dynamic. But in this song instead of asking, she chose to give instead. It's so desperate and I felt it to my core. Mid-High-ranking ( couldn't keep it directly in the middle) • The Frost - makes me feel like drinking hot cocoa by the fire in the countryside on an overcast winter day. • My Love, Mine all Mine - this could've been higher, but it's on here just because I really like Mitski's theatrics in her song and this doesn't have much of that. I consider it a classic though. It's a song that I'll reach for when I just need to listen to something good • I don't like my mind - relateable title AND direct. I don't have much to say otherwise though. Low-ranking personally • Buffalo replaced - I think it's a bit too grungy and rusty for my tastes, and is a bit too monotonous in my ears too. • I'm your man - I see that a lot of people were really impacted by the similes in this song but it didn't really impact me the same way, probably because I also think that the song was overall monotonous except for the last part which I loved. I'm really a sucker for Mitski's theatrics, jumpscares, weird sfx, and weird lyric sequences. • Bug like an angel - same issue with the monotony of it all save for the jumpscares • I love me after you - I like this one a step above the rest here, but it still didn't stand out to me. It actually sounds like an alternative version to Blue Light, and where that one is a wild and drunken sensation this one feels like the winding down and mind-wandering version. Between the two I'd just reach for Blue Light.
