Just a quick video showing how we did the 6 volt to 12 volt conversion on a Ferguson TO-20. The kit we used for this was #AKT0015. Kit contained all wiring, brackets, resistor, and alternator. Fairly straight forward and easy, instructions are definitely lacking. Also to note we use the same 6 volt starter, no need to change.

Background to the Ferguson TO20 tractor: The tractor was produced from 1947-52 by Harry Ferguson, Inc. of Dearborn, Michigan. The definition of the TO20 is Tractor Overseas, 20HP, TE20 is Tractor England, 20HP. The TO20 is the American built version since it utilizes the Continental Z120 and Delco components. The TE20 utilizes a Standard Engine with Lucas components. Harry Ferguson was the original inventor and designer of this tractor and inventor of the 3pt hitch. Henry Ford and Harry Ferguson teamed together with a "Handshake Agreement" to build the 9N Ford in 1939, the 2N in 1942. After Ford's death in 1947, Henry Ford II broke the agreement with Ferguson and violated the design of the tractor agreement by developing the 8N Ford in 1948. Ferguson went right to work with his own production firm in both England and the United States. By 1953, Ferguson merged with Massey Harris, and by 1958, formed present day Massey Ferguson Company. Harry Ferguson passed away in 1960.

TE20 USES CONTINENTAL Z120 ENGINE LUCAS ELECTRICS AND DIFFERENT BRAKE COMPANY AND TRANNY CASE IS ALUMINUM.ALSO STIFFENING RODS FROM TRANNY TO FRONT OF TRACTOR BECAUSE OF ALUMINUM TRANNY CASE. 19 IN FRONT WHEELS ON TE20 AND 16 WHEELS ON TO20. TE20 GIRLING BRAKES AND TO20 BENDIX BRAKES. TE20 LUCAS DISTRIBUTOR AND TO20 DELCO DISTRIBUTOR. TO20 TWIST LOCK METAL GAS CAP TE20 SCREW ON BRASS GAS CAP. TE20 HAS OIL FILLED FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS AND TO20 HAS GREASED FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS. TO20 TWO BOLT STARTER SAFETY SWITCH. TE20 FOUR BOLT STARTER SAFETY SWITCH. TE20 LUCAS DISTRIBUTOR POINTS CAN BE EARLY TYPE OR LATER TYPE. I MAY HAVE MISSED SOMETHING BUT THAT SHOULD HELP PEOPLE WHO HAVE EITHER ONE OF THESE TRACTORS. I HAVE BOTH. I THINK EACH HAS ITS OWN STARTER AND THEY WON'T INTERCHANGE UNLESS YOU CHANGE THE FLYWHEEL I DO BELIEVE. OF COURSE EVERYTHING ON THE TE20 COSTS MORE I HAVE FOUND THAT IS DIFFERENT. BOTH ARE GREAT TRACTORS COMPARED TO THE FORD N SERIES TRACTORS WHICH USE THE INEFFICIENT FLAT HEAD ENGINES.I AM NOT PREJUDICED JUST NOT FOUND A GOOD DEAL ON A FORD YET THAT NEEDS TLC.I ALSO OWN A TO30 THAT IS CURRENTLY GETTING THE ONCE OVER BEFORE IT IS PUT INTO MY FLEET FOR SERVICE.

@ibsoarin
@ibsoarin 4 года назад
@@johnmcbride7991 TO-20 serial numbers for 1948 are #1 - 1807. So your serial number #399 would indicate an early 1948 Ferguson TO-20. Please use good cooling system maintenance if your TO-20 has its original Continental Z120 engine so it does not overheat. You do not want cracks in the top webs between the cylinders - not so bad. But if you notice coolant in the oil then you have to worry about cracks at the lower ends which go through the crankshaft journals - very bad! Wet cylinders like in the Z120 engine are still used in diesel and industrial engines.

Nice tractor. Good to see other folks restoring these old beauties. I'm working on a 1950 TEA 20 and the alternator conversion is my next job. The 'TO' in the TO 20 nameplate stands for 'Tractor Overseas' while the 'TE' in the TEA 20 nameplate stands for 'Tractor England'. So the TE's are the European tractors and the TO's are the North American versions. Keep up the good work.
@ibsoarin
@ibsoarin 4 года назад
I assume the TE tractors were made in Coventry, England, UK and the TO tractors were made in Detroit, Michigan, USA. Does the TEA stand for petrol engine and TED stand for diesel engine?
@johnwalker5938
@johnwalker5938 4 года назад
@@ibsoarin I think the 'A' was the designation for the Motor manufacture. The TEA used a power plant from the Standard Motor Company. There was a TE 20 and a TEB 20, both were petrol engines however unlike the TEA20 they used Continental Z engines.
@ibsoarin
@ibsoarin 4 года назад
@@johnwalker5938 I found a lot of information on Queensland Tractor Spares website: www.queenslandtractorspares.com.au The TE20-Serial-Numbers.pdf file had all of the information I was looking for - queenslandtractorspares.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/TE20-Serial-Numbers.pdf As you stated TE20 is a Ferguson tractor with Continental Z120 petrol engine, TEB20 is a Ferguson tractor with Continental Z120 petrol engine - Narrow (although I do not know what Narrow means). TEA20 is a Ferguson tractor with Standard petrol engine. TED20 is a Ferguson tractor with Standard Tractor Vaporising Oil (TVO) engine. I assume TVO is similar to kerosene. TEF20 is a Ferguson tractor with Standard diesel engine. I had no idea of the variety of engines provided for Ferguson TE20 series tractors! Way to go Harry Ferguson!

+anthony preston No regulator, there should be one in the alternator for charging the battery, but nothing on the tractor.
@Squossifrage

There should be a regulator mounted on the firewall under the battery. EDIT: you said the original 6 V generator had already been replaced with a 6 V alternator. Whoever did that probably removed the old regulator and switched from positive to negative ground.

Thanks for the video. I was just trying to convert my 20 today and that damn alt bracket!!...the belt is now 4 inches too long thanks to the bs instructions. so apparently the bracket doesn't sit square on top? from your vid it looks as though it sits about 45* on the block?..i bought my kit from yesterdays tractor, call the company and the guy said "our kits fit, you might have a tractor with some aftermarket mods, you may have to measure the belt and the pulleys to find out what belt you need then go to napa"...bs, your instructions suck!..i measured the original belt, 40.5" in line with manufacturer specs, wrapped a string around the pulleys with new alternator, 36"...so again the guy says i'm wrong and something isn't spec..NO! YOUR DIRECTIONS ARE CRAP!..how about a better picture on the directions....anyway, thanks for the video, going to try re-aligning that bracket tomorrow , see if that cures the fitment.

+RDAllen copied from Yesterday's tractors About Ferguson TractorsHarry Ferguson, born in 1884, started experimenting with tractors and plows in his early years. Harry is an important person in tractor history, being the inventor of the 3-point hitch. It was dubbed the "Ferguson System". After meeting with Henry Ford in 1938, over a handshake it was agreed that the 3-point hitch system would be installed on the Ford tractors being produced at that time (Ford 9N from 1939-1942 and the 2N from 1942-1947). These tractors had the "Ferguson System" insignia on them and Harry Ferguson received a share of the profits.In 1947 Henry Ford's Grandson officially terminated this "handshake agreement". The Ford 8N tractors that were being produced around this time no longer carried the "Ferguson System" insignia. Ferguson sued the Ford Motor Co. and eventually won a settlement.In what some say is retaliation, Harry Ferguson began producing his own line of tractors, beginning with the TO-20 in 1948. These tractors looked suprisingly similar to the Ford 9N and 2N and sported the 3-point hitch.
@Squossifrage
@Squossifrage 8 лет назад
No, it's the other way around. The 9N / 2N was designed by Ferguson and built by Ford in the US. The TE20 / TO20 was its direct successor and was built by Standard Motor co. in the UK, with some overlap with US production of the older models. The TO20 was built for export to the US and equipped with a Continental engine, while the TE20 was built for the UK and European market and had a range of Standard engines (small-bore / large-bore gasoline, diesel, kerosene, vaporizing oil). Ford broke the agreement with Ferguson and started building the Ford 8N, which infringed on numerous Ferguson patents, and ended up paying millions of dollars to Ferguson in an out-of-court settlement.
