~~~~~~~~~~~One of the most frequent questions we have received on the fermented chicken feed is "Can I exclusively feed MY chickens on fermented scratch?"
Like many things in homesteading there isn't a 'one size fits all' answer. In this video Josh talks about how to know if your chickens are right for all fermented feed or if you'll need to supplement with other feed too.
Thanks for the lesson. I have Corn, millet, sorghum and soya beans. Can I mix all of them to ferment without baking the soya beans?
How do you adjust in winter when they don’t free range? I’m in MN so winter lasts a long time!
Good information here, thank you! I feed warm fermented grains in winter (northern B.C.) and they love it. This is in addition to wheat, oats, a bit of fresh & canned foods along with sheep fat and they do well. The worst thing I have had happen with feed is with commercially dried bread. Lost two birds that had eaten it too fast I believe and it stuck in their esophagus At least that's where I found the bread when I opened the birds up, so I don't recommend feeding any to birds wild or domestic. As you stress, there are so many factors in feeding that no one method is going to do the best for the birds in any given area, so it's best to pay attention to the birds and their eggs, so true! All the best.
I too live in the north ...curious if you do the fermenting in your house then so it doesnt freeze? And doesn't that smell? Or if you keep covers on pails maybe not much?
@tallcedars2310
@tallcedars2310 3 года назад
@@brendascott8243 Yes,in the house, it only takes a day and doesn't smell bad. I can tell it's fermenting as there are bubbles around the edges of the pail every morning. If it sits for two days it will start to really ferment and that's when I notice it smells a bit off. Birds still eat it tho so it never goes to waste. Leave it for 3 days, then it's smelly! .I never cover the pail since it only sits for a day, or two if too much is happening around the farm. They eat the dry grains if we are busy so they are never wthout feed. Hope that helps! P.S. I also rinse the grains a couple times to help remove any chemicals that might be on the seed.
How many chickens are you moving around? How do you protect them from predators?
@kaycipiper
@kaycipiper 2 года назад
When you say to start them at 1/4 to 1/3lb per bird are you referring to the weight of feed pre-fermented (dry) or after fermentation?
@duppsydaisy
Sounds like after fermentation if your supplementing.
What breed of chicken is your large grey rooster shown in this video?
@GrowingGreener
Thank you for the information. I know this is older but if you see this I wanted to ask... Don't they fly - sort of? so they don't ever get over the netting? Also do you just leave up posts and move the netting so you always have posts up and ready for a chicken area?
He probably clips there wings like we have to.
@colleengarren1462
@colleengarren1462 Год назад
Just trim off the flight feathers from one wing on each bird. They won’t be able to get over the fence.
@heatherm4621
@heatherm4621 3 года назад
How do you keep them from flying over the chicken fencing? Mine are into everything.
@Tess1984
@Tess1984 3 года назад
Heather M. You need to clip the feathers at an angle off of only one wing. Clip as short as you can. ( Be sure only the feathers) Start your angle from the top of wing down so that the longest part is at the bottom making it unable to gain the air to fly. I hope this helps you. 🐥🐥🐥
One question how long do you let the grains ferment and once grain has fermented how long do you serve it. I know after a certain point it just keeps souring is there a ploy that you get rid of it and start a fresh batch. Thanks
3 days fermenting at room temp, then drain and put in the fridge. It’s good for two days chilled.
I'm a newbie with chickens, so don't know what I don't know yet. 😄 Can you feed chickens fermented quinoa? I know it's a pretty good source of protein but I've never seen it in chicken feed of any description.
@spoolsandbobbins
@spoolsandbobbins Год назад
They need at least 16 percent protein but may also need additional vitamins/minerals. Keep doing research, there’s lots of info out there!
I would also like to know how you protect the chickens from predators? Do the goats? I heard donkeys can protect them too, but what if you don’t want goats or donkeys? How can I protect my chickens if I let them feed on an empty acre of grass, growth, etc? Thanks🙂
Rooster, guard goose, cat all work but netting is your best bet!
Is that 1/4 to 1/3 pound of dry feed? Or already fermented feed? I’m sure there is a weight difference.
What kind of seeds can chickens eat? Carrots? Other garden veggie seeds? Kitchen herb seeds? Purslane seeds?
@Mimzy_Springdale
Lynn w I live closer into town and I close my chickens into the coop at night while letting them out during the day to free range my acre of land. We have several predators around so this is why I put them to bed at night.
I have to disagree with you. I keep American and English Gamefowl, all in pens 10ft x 5ft. They have lots of greens, fruit, sprouted whole oats, seeds on a daily basis. No boredom, excellent healthy conditioned, shiney featheres, eggs are endless with strong shells. It's all about how you feed, and when to condition them. Edited to add that throw in wood chips and leaves that have a ton of bugs within it, that keeps them busy rummaging around. It's not about the size of the pens, plus free ranging to extent is inviting trouble with predators on the look at, easy pickings.
