Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. addressed his PED suspension, if he stands by his ringworm story, his apology to fans and teammates, decision to have shoulder surgery, the tough road ahead and why this will never happen again.
Marty is the best interviewer we have in San Diego. She is respectful but cuts straight to the point. I listen to the Xtra 1360 show because of the interviews I have watched from her.
Great video that we all have been waiting for and wanting to hear from him. I wish him the best in his journey to return to full strength. We miss you Tatis!
I support Tatis 100%. Look up the case of Therese Johaug. Same thing happened except hers was given to her by the team physician. She was suspended during the 2018 Olympics and then came back with 3 gold medal this year
Ain’t no love lost here a frustrated fan? Yes to some extent of course ,the mistake he has made as a professional athlete sucks for us as fans and I’m sure for him as well but in my personal life it has no affect to say screw the man he made a mistake just like 100% of us have I’m sure he gets it and it’s a lesson learned, come back and handle business kid💪!
He showed up to face the music, that’s step one. You know how many pro athletes have knowingly taken actual steroids to gain an advantage and spent so much time & energy deflecting & fighting to protect their lie? Tatis dropped the appeal & is owning up to it. To me, that shows maturity. I’m willing to give him a second chance.
@@JumboJuneau totally normal to feel that way as well. Banned is banned but The substance he got caught with is an extremely mild PED. He prob used it more for healing purposes rather then muscle/performance reasons. Doesn’t make it right. But I feel he has the talent to show what’s he’s done wasn’t due to PEDs…. I also like how MLB didn’t show any special treatment. He’s one of the faces of the game. And that didn’t make them sweep this under the rug.
@@teardropsclosedcaskets_nun1747 doubt he had much say in any of this. He has agents. Managers, publicists, assistants, family etc etc. and human nature is to always deny and fight immediately after getting caught or in trouble.
EXACTLY AND THESE TOUNG KIDS GETTING PAID MILLIONS TO COME AND PLAY AT 15,16,17 NEED TO BE TAUGHT A LIL MORE THAN BASEBALL B4 THEY WANT TO HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE AS IDOLS AND ICONS B4 THEY SIGN THEM TO THESE MEGA CONTRACTS
Fans are making this such a bigger deal than it needs to be.. Dumb mistake; not an intentional act. He'll be back real soon. Im repping Tatis even more!
YES 23 ! That's what we all needed to hear, you failed millions while you're earning millions, the entire county of SD fans, supporters who spend hard earned money hoping this could be the season some of us have waited 53 years for. You don't want to end up the butt of jokes or a movie reference to 'Dumb & Dumber'. You're better than that, you were raised better, coached better, paid better. Best thing is you can get fixed physically, mentally & hopefully spiritually, you come back help your poor teammates & fans & things will be forgiven real fast. Be a good man first & foremost, now go kick ass & begin again 23.
Dude…real good words. I started to post a comment then decided to read some first and saw yours. I decided not to post my comment because I was going to post words expressing harsh criticism. I think your comment covers just about everything that needed to be said and I echo your sentiments. I’m glad I hesitated now because 2 wrongs don’t make a right (his with what he did and mine with the words that I was going post). Solid gold comment bro.
@@bamadad53 Oh geez Tthanks . Well it came straight from my heart, could of been my son in such horrible place, he 23 made a remark about looking at himself & feeling terrible thoughts. I took it as he's been in a really dark place post piss test.. Made me think of some of too large group of under 25 athletes many in college that have committed suicide & I thought he needs to be looked after really closely till he's able to start practicing. Hope he doesn't have anxiety now as well. Thanks brother 😉
@@wammer122 I understand that my friend. I don’t know the players name at the moment (MLB player) you’ll probably remember it, he went thru a really dark place and put a bullet in his brain while sitting on his sofa at home…but he lived (tragic story and graphic article in the ESPN app). He didn’t even call 911 until the next day. He eventually attempted a come back in the majors but I don’t remember if he succeeded long term. But he did learn that he needed help and badly. It’s sad what he did but if memory serves me correctly he eventually got the help he so badly needed. After seeing your comment it made me stop and reflect…yeah ok these guys are being paid millions but they aren’t perfect. They have the “media” and “social” in there grill 24/7 so it’s a wonder more of them don’t make tons of seriously critical mistakes that could have gross negative impact on them and their lives…and their families lives…for years to come. Anyway, your words got me thinking and reflecting so I decided to stop with any harsh critical BS. I now hope Tattis learns from this and seeks and gets whatever help with anything he might be going thru and comes thru out the other side a better person in the long run. And if he does I hope it sends strong messages to other players to “seek help” when in a dark place before doing something that could potentially derail their career. I’m not a big Padre fan but I also hope the teams front office doesn’t turn their back on him. That could end him seriously.
@@bamadad53 You are talking about Drew Robinson. He attempted suicide but survived. Doctors had to remove his right eye. He later signed a minor league deal with the Giants to play for their triple A team. He recently retired from pro baseball and is now in the front office of the San Francisco Giants !
@@obiejean thanks for feedback. I couldn’t remember his name but I’m glad to here he ended up being successful. After reading the ESPN expose I was afraid he might sink back into another deep depression and attempt suicide again. Sounds like he was able to deal with his demons and put them behind him. I always like a happy ending.
He's just a kid, in a rush to come back and make up for his first mistake, getting on that bike. And in the process just made things worse by trying to skip steps and speed up the recovery process. Seems like his shoulder injury is a bigger deal than we first imagined, so good on him to take this time to get back to 100% and give us his all next year
I'm so impressed with the reporters covering the Padres. Ms Marty gave Tatis Jr a chance to come clean but he still sticks to this ringworm cream while his father says it's from a haircut? The fact that Tatis Sr says "this is such a small thing" and "not worth this issue" re-enforces the lack of integrity. The D.R and the U.S. Lead all PED failures. 6 players in the Dominican Summer league were just suspended on 08/24/22 for PED failures. Sammy Sosa, Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, A-Rod, Bartolo, Melky, Nelson Cruz, Jhonny Peralta, Cano 2x's, Tatis Jr and many more from the D.R have cheated and lied, so what message does that send to the youth especially in the D.R? Cheat, lie and blame the media for making it bigger than it is because it's no big deal when everybody is doing it. That's why corruption flourishes in developing nations. Zero integrity.
This is the best full length video I’ve found on RU-vid, As far as Fernando Tatis Jr I admire the honesty and that’s why I am cheering for your comeback, the truth will set you free and you already realized that, lean into your teammates and their wisdom and brotherhood
At first I was mad at him for this, but as time went by I learn to forgive and forget cause not everyone is prefect. I can see it in his eyes that not only did he let himself down but he let a lot of people down. At the end of the day we learn to forgive and make better decisions as times goes by! So come back stronger Tatis, we got your back. LFGSD
My son is 3 months older than this young man. I would accept my son’s apology and I accept Tatis Jr’s … If any of us want to see Heaven… We must forgive as we all need to be Forgiven, thank you Jesus Christ 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Let’s turn the page and go win this whole thing ‼️
Forgiving is one think but being ignorant and stupid is another. Being Naive is not good. You do not forgive a wolf for killing the herd, you deal with the problem. Tatis is a liar took steroids lied to the team and is going to miss the entire season because of his lies and lack of care. We can forgive him when he shows there is something to forgive. Don’t be stupid.
That's better. Man up, own it. Apologize to those that matter & ignore those that don't. Get well & move on. You are blessed with other world talent, young man. Your team needs you back. Baseball fans... even those of us from other cities... WANT you back. Just look at the universal love & homage being given to Pujols right now. He's earned it with decades of selfless dedication. You still can too. You are blessed with that kind of talent. Seize it. All the best to you, Fernando. Millions of us fans who LOVE the game look forward to watching you play for many years to come. I know THIS fan of 60+ yrs does:) Put this in your rear view mirror & look ahead...
I think he needs to change (his team) whoever has been advising him away in the D.R. if it's his dad that's not good. I'm sure the f.o. has asked him about that but he needs bette advice r than what he's gotten. It's another world there, so much different. I hope he realizes that. Gonna be tough going on the road, I hope it pisses him off good. 👍
With great success, comes an even greater responsibility! Especially in what the Padres gave Fernando Tatis Jr. in earnest! Glad Fernando mentioned the time for words, will stop and now it's time to show actions will be his only objective now. Time to 'prove' your willingness to 'earn' the trust back from the San Diego Padres organization, team-mates, and fans!
Good enough for me. I really didn’t know what to do or think about this guy, but he changed my mind. I think back to when I was his age, I’m sure it wasn’t easy for him today. I ask for forgiveness everyday, as I am far from perfect, so he has a fresh start with me, and hope that he follows the straight and narrow path that leads to his future success. Good luck from this day forward Fernando!
Idk, first the motorcycle BS and now this? He's gonna have to do a lot to regain people's trust. But no matter what, the Hall of Fame is out of question, he'll always be a steroid cheat.
@@bobbyheenan4061 time will reveal all things . Tatis is human and has apologized now time to prove himself. Best thing about is he has 13 more years with the Padres to go!! Go Tatis!
@@sancactusman3096 I just can't get over what he's done to the team. They emptied the farm system to make a real push this season and his selfishness spoiled it. We'll never know what could've been, Josh Bell is a free agent after this season, so we'll never get to see that lineup I was so excited about. He let everybody down several times, and I still don't buy his story. It just sucks to see such a promising young star destroy his reputation and screw the team over again and again. It's gonna take a lot more than sob stories and shallow apologies.
some ppl treat athletes like theyre super humans just bc they have a skillset and money. this dude is 23 coming off a career year. make mistakes when youre 23, learn and come back stronger. ill still be a fan 80 games after, but just dont make these stupid mistakes when youre in your prime at 30. respect for owning up and facing the media.
Tatis Jr. has had his "wake up" call. I hope he learns his lesson As a SD Padre fan, I waited all last season for this year and so far it has been difficult to not having him on the field.
I was heartbroken and so upset when this news came out but after a couple of weeks the emotions have calmed down. I like what I heard in this press conference, hopefully this drives him the rest of his career. I'm willing to forgive him and hopefully he follows through with mending all the relationships that he fractured.
I think unlike MOST not ALL players from the DR, Jr didn’t struggle as a child…didn’t grow up learning to play ball with sticks and rocks or whatever else was around. He grew up the son of a big leaguer, never knew what it’s like to struggle, and I think took it for granted that he was in the big leagues and had a huge opportunity that came with huge responsibility to not only his team, the fans, but to himself. Been a Padres fan since 69, and have never felt so ashamed of a player as I have of Fernando. I hope he learns and grows from this, and comes back ready to PLAY. Would be nice to get a COMPLETE SEASON from him someday!!
Not a mistake, it was a choice. It's only a mistake because he got caught. By sticking to the ringworm story he is laughing in the face of all padre fans. I would respect him more if he said "I took this stuff so i can heal faster and get back to playing baseball".
What hurts me even more (because I believe he did not do this to get any advantage), is that this will hurt his chances into getting into the Hall of Fame which is something every fan dreams of their favorite player getting into.
I’m a dodger fan an of all the great players an I honest feel this won’t hurt him since he didn’t play an inning this year so he’ll be fine he just needs to grow up.
How fast everyone made you a star is how fast they quickly take it back. Still young, this time be humble cause I think you know about now how quickly you can lose everything. Live and learn and move forward!
Yeah, he shouldn't have lied about the ringworm story. His parents should stop lying too. Sounds like he's owning it now, probably too late though, especially after the motorcycle BS.
Trying to figure out why none of the reporters asked why he got 80 game suspension instead of 20 to 40 for first time offense....??? Obviously this is his second PED offense. 1 more and he could be banned for a year.... Wonder why that wasnt brought up??????
You can’t blame people for your injury but we also know you’re a good player I can’t wait to see what’s next for you next year I hope they don’t try to find a another way for you not to play
Tatis its okay if you PEDS to get bigger stronger and faster and to hit homeruns. You are only human my friend. I still got my Ken Camanetti jersey from 96 and will always love him. Hopefully you can take better care of your body and just play with your heart because you are a great player. I still believe you can be a generational defensive shortstop for the next ten years. This is a blessing in disguise.
LETS ALL NEVER FORGET 1 THING ALLLLL THOSE STATS TAT EARNED HIS WHOLE CAREER CAME OFF OF CLEAN NEGATIVE TESTS. SO WHEN HE COMES BACK BETTER ALL THE NEW PADRES FANS THAT HAVE BEEN DRAGGING HIM THROUGH THE MUD CONSTANTLY BETTER NOT SWITCH UP WHEN HE DESTROYS THAT BALL WHEN HE RETURNS🙌🏾💯
I can see the sorrow in his face. Its unfortunate he put himself in that situation. He will be forgiven but it’s gonna take some time. HOF is probably out of the question but he will still have a great career should he stay healthy and clean. He handled himself like a man.
I’m still a big fan, people make mistakes… and especially considering he’s been taking career advice from his pops, Tatis Sr, who played during the steroid era. Of course his pops gave him the topical steroids to help him heal faster. Glad Tatis took this step, showing accountability. Now he needs to focus on being better for next season.
I don't even care tbh . Tatis brought many back watching baseball. I believe him when he said it was just rubbing cream and the mlb should have kept this indoors and talked to Tatis. Tatis brings in fans .
@@Culbjay Well, it's a little unfair. To be suspended 80 games while a guy like Ozuna gets a slap on the wrist is ridiculous! Tatis should have gotten about 40 or less. Maybe it's the rule, but it needs to be changed then cause it is extreme.
@@Culbjay different case man idk Tatis was literally the face of baseball and it was literally a running cream not a steriod metabolite. Mlb should have kept this indoors and talked with Tatis . I legit stopped watching baseball for awhile as a dodgers fan until Tatis made the west interesting again.
@@lonzoballcandoitall4132 I 100% agree with you about Ozuna, DUIs nowadays are such a blemish on you record especially with all the safe ways now of getting home. With Tatis, you are just taking his word when we don't know the 100% truth but this is still his fault. He has a history of not communicating issues with his team including this one (wrist issues, shoulder issues etc.), and even if the story is true the substance has been banned for a long time now. If you bring a medicine not FDA approved and give me some and i get hurt/injured, you would be in serious trouble so same thing applies here.
@@BrianGarcia-kc4vi so again if this was Ohtani, Judge, Trout, or Soto and this happened to them it would be ok because they get people watching, but if this happens to a random player from the Reds let's say then suspend them? When Barry Bonds said he didn't take steroids, did you believe that as well even after it was proven? Automatically taking one side because you might like the person is trash logic especially when there is no evidence from his side other than his word (both cases). By your logic, top 10 players in all sports should be able take steroids because "they get people watching."
Time to build him back up. This felt genuine off the cuff and not rehearsed. Its also stupid that some people think he BEEN on steroids.Like he been tested LOTS before this & RANDOMLY tested but NOW he forgot how to cover his tracks??? Lol. Ya ok…I forgive him and CANT WAIT to see him ball out again!
AS A DOMINICAN DUDE as I am .living in Indiana . I can say that is a disgrace what we've been doing for years now in the MLB. It just get me mad seeing Sammy Sosa. Manny .A.Rod . And many others greatest being involved in this type of shit. And now Tatis ? I feel embarrassed. WHY ? because we are known to be one of the greatest countries in the world when it comes to bring SUPERSTARS and LEGENDARY players to the MLB since the 1970s and 80s until now . HISTORY HAS SHOWN that this is not us. We don't need this steroids or this type of vitamins or whatever you wanna call it stuff to perform or to be a superstar. This is not how we operate. We're not fake . We are built through sacrifice, passion and love for the game .going to practice at 6 am .until the sun hit our faces in a way that we would die practicing day and night. Sometimes without food . Hungry. But Hungry for greatness. .that's the Dominican style .we bleed baseball. Even I was in a organized team when I was 13. Is the culture. This PDEs and steroids shit are not us .this is just some stupid moves some players do .is a personal thing.ike not every white people is racist . Some choose the be like that. This is not our identity. I don't know what their personal motive is .because is not money.. it has to be some poor advice from friends or something. You're just embarrassing our reputation. Every Dominican know that We don't need that, to put on a show in any part of the globe when it comes to baseball . Let's stop the excuses. And let's stop doing this type of unnecessary moves .we're good. We're great and we're one of the proudest country ever when it comes to baseball . Let's stop embarrassing our country, families and fans and let's make better decisions, history has shown that we don't need this, to make it to the Hall of fame. And to be great . We're already great we don't need that ,we are like Rocky . Not like Ivan drago
@The W Big business my ass. You didn't grow up in the poor neighborhoods of the Dominican Republic like me. If you make it the MLB. That's enough to say you're a millionaire and someone who made it even if you're not a star .there's just no excuses to not take the road Pedro .marichal and those past legends took and became greats and respected by my whole nation
Te deseo lo mejor. Somos humanos, WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES! Actions speak louder then words! I supported you then and will keep supporting you. Don’t give up, keep fighting and PROVE EVERYONE WRONG!! Stay strong #23 💛🤎🤎
Good kid just messed up big time and everyone deserves a second chance and that it no more cheating the game of baseball play clean like you did as a kid!Come bask strong cause Padres can’t hit the broad side of a barn right now!
I believe him that he had a ringworm on his foot sometimes the mlb policy is strictly family business an things go wrong it’s only human to mess up fix it clean it up an get back up snotty kid love you bro.
he didn't appeal because he thought he'd lose despite his expanation of the use of PED's meaning he most likely would have atleast reduced the suspension to 30 games for negligence or at the very least salvage his public image. You've gotta appeal even if you have a 0% chance
