God it really was worth watching back then, not just somebody from the canteen or a minor celeb trying to flog a book who tells the host what they can and can't ask
The legend that is Gay Byrne. No one like him, no one can come close to him today he truly was a gifted interviewer and host. He was a national treasure.
I found him to be egotistical. He talked down to people unless they were of the same socio-economic background. Just look at the reels. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy many of his interviews but he spoke to certain people in very different and patronising ways. Women, men and people he saw as lesser or a threat to the status quo.
He was an arrogant West Brit who looked down on poorer and less privileged people than himself. His open disgust for those suffering under the apartheid regime in Northern Ireland and his use of his platform to brand it's leaders as terrorists coupled with his vocal pride in his father's participation in the British Army tells us all we need to know about him, a wannabe member of the Protestant Ascendancy and an embarrassment to modern Ireland.
No one will ever cover Gaybo’s work and entertaining shows . He was a legacy , good or bad and with both views he introduced us all living at home in Ireland the most memorable debates .
I was not a huge fan of Gay in general, but he certainly was great on the LLS. Such a petty that honest debate and the ability to take a bit of direct confrontation is long gone. Some great debated there too. The lady a the end was superb
The cowards homogenised the show when they stopped allowing audience participation. Pat Kenny started it, because he couldn't handle conflict, and Tubridy was terrible as well. Gaybo was the master
It's a treat to see the remarkable Gay Byrne looking back here over lively, earnest debate. Real people and real issues - community and democracy in action ! Thank you.
After 40 years I made this video about one of the countries that I Love the Most… Ireland. My daughter just visited the Green Emerald last week and that was my driver to make this video!!! If I have to mention two events that marked my life while in Ireland … Taking part in Saint Patrick’s Parade was one of them and secondly to be invited to the Late Late Show magically conducted by the best TV presenter I ever met! Gay Byrne!!! With my most sincere and warm feelings for my friends in Ireland! May this New Year bring Health and Happiness to All Irish people!! I agree absolutely Kevin ! My two daughters here in Germany, started school with 6,5 years, which is normal outside of the British Isles(I use this term geographically). They were at exactly the same level as their Irish cousins at 9 yrs. old. Great income-based childcare over here, which is sadly lacking in Ireland.
Gary O'Driscoll , no, absolutely not ! The wast majority of crime is still committed by German citizens. I have been living in Germany for 27 years and I know this country well. I also have met and gotten to know lots of Syrian refugees and am struck by how quickly they learn the language here, a thing which took longer in my case. They just want to get on with their schooling, uni education, jobs, daily lives, as they were before the war there. This is no migrant crisis, either from economic migrants like myself or any other type. The gutter press tabloid media and the far right would have you believe otherwise, but most people can think and see for themselves here, thank God.
Cathal Ó Braonáin , I could of course, but it’s just a traditional thing to use the former, as the British did control all the islands for a very long time, unfortunately. Anyone with any intelligence and an ounce of education, knows that Ireland is not British.
@@maureengoller3213 The roman religious cult/holy roman empire paid off upper class to allow them into society. They did this slowly over time with no combat, no invasions of roman armies. They didn't know that one day DNA would be discovered and we find only 2% or less of this old roman dna in 'britain'. Being factually correct Britain isn't even British. The anglo invasion story is also made up. The church replaced upper and middle class over time and renamed/changed Irish places/names wtf is that? "but it’s just a traditional thing to use the former, as the British did control all the islands for a very long time"? 67,000 britzi troops were used to remove the food at gunpoint in the mid 1800's. Will i call you a boring empty scandinavian now because of tradition?
Great to see Tony Gregory featured, a passionate, dedicated politician. Shame that the North Inner City have not honoured his incredible work over 30+ years. No building, bridge, statue, etc, named in memory of this local lad. RIP Sir.
Voted for Tony from my first vote until he resigned from government due to ill health. There's never been anyone like him since & I doubt there ever will be. He was one of a kind
The episode which featured the two guys who vandalized one of the "moving statues" back in the 1980's is truly mind blowing - would love to see that one again.
totally agree with your view on this. Its almost frowned upon fr someone in the audience to have an opinion that might be different. But Ireland has changed so much now, We are slowly loosing our identify. Sad times
@@gramar7878 None of them can. The EU has neutered us and I expect them to "gentling" us till we won't resist at all when they decide to form the EU army they've been lying to us for the last two decades despite all their promises to the contrary. Then there'll be the EU equivalent of the federal tax and we're all fucked.
I notice that there were no ferocious rows concerning partition and the north, but then I remembered that Byrne rarely allowed Republicans on his show.
Gay byrne was having his house painted he would not let the workers use outside toilet he had the long drive way covered during the paint job after payment a paint can fell over and leaked the full lenth of the driveway
Ryan Tubberty wouldn't last 5 mins doing the REAL "Late Late show" Get an audience involved? My Arse!! RTE should re-run past Late Late shows because I AIN'T watching Tubberty 👈☹️
FR Jackie Robinson!! The man the myth the legend... Much love to him, who speaks for the people and still has no fear of the top brass Vatican..... We all need a Jackie Robinson in our life!!
Tubridy just seems to love whoever happens to be today's guest. I only dip into TLLS these days, and might end up watching 10 or 15 mins. That's if there happens to be a subject I have some interest in.
You don't see any of this now. It's all just this low vibration, garbage interviews, talentless celebs, and the auld tug on the heart strings local suffering
Am ambivalent about Gay Byrne, he more than anyone ushered in an Ireland that in the end he never liked. You cannot deny his consummate professionalism and his decency as a human being. A very great loss to his family and the country.
"The greatest achievement of humanity is not its works of art, science or technology but the recognition of its own dysfunction, its own madness.” (Eckhart Tolle). No one present here was aware of the sad truth of Tolle's appraisal of our predicament.
