This channel and Harry’s Garage is a fantastic combo occasionally crossing each other path. Many of the younger “ what will be my new daily” - I couldn’t give a ….. when the two aforementioned you actually learn because both know exactly what they are talking about from experience.
This kind of professionalism, craftsmanship and attention to detail is what made Britain the envy of the world. Thankfully Iain is still flying the flag🇬🇧
@@iain_tyrrell I wouldn't say thing go slowly! You put out a video per week. That is, in itself, an indicator of how hard you work on them, once you factor in getting the people involved and how you want to present the information and then editing to suit. I think your camera work is excellent and the audio is every bit as good. There are lots of other, lesser channels with lower production standards.
What I find is stunning in this restoration is the quality of the paint work! I have never seen a more spectacular paint work than this example and this is from a monitor not even in real life!
It's a neverending series of issues, the gas tank being a perfect example. You really have to have the passion (and deep pockets) to be a custodian of these gems.
I remember my boss buying a brand new F40 in 1989 and taking me for a ride that very afternoon, it was fantastic super car and the acceleration was out of this world.
One of the best cars ever constructed Iain Your work as a company is the standard no others can be judged by Not fair on them Can’t wait to hear it at full song once it’s warmed through of course 😎🏴❤️
If the fuel tank is American then it’s aluminum. Of course, if it’s in the UK it gets the extra i to become aluminium. But what is it in Germany? Aluminium. France? Same. Italy? Alluminio!
Bag tanks are one of the things that makes keeping a McLaren F1 on the road difficult. One of the thing Gordon Murray did in the new T50 is to put in an ordinary tank, to make them simpler to drive. Same with the tyres - standard sizes instead of the F1's odd size.
That is hands down, one beautiful Ferrari F40! Also, I've been longing for the next part of the Ferrari F40 restoration series and all I can say is, it's well worth the wait.^^
Amazing video once again thank you! And yes we do need a “Craigs Corner” channel so we can be taught the dark arts of interior trim and material repair and restoration plus all the proper go to cleaning and maintenance with the appropriate products and applications used and why. All good stuff to boost confidence in tackling such subject matter. That Ferrari though… thanks for inviting us to its world. Keep up the amazing work and content.
Iain, I installed a CNC cutter in a factory way back in 1997, somewhere in south England, they cut the material for many bladder tanks, F1, Indy cars etc. seeing these out the car again has brought back fond memories, I forget the name of the company..
With regard to 'relatively modern' sagging headliners - it's not so much the failure of the glue but the serious degradation of the foam backing which effectively turns the foam into a 'pile of dust like particles'. The installation of a 'better quality' foam backing - if it exists - will help the situation.
Beautiful restoration. I'm not the F40's biggest fan (always preferred the 288) but the glamour shots of this car look stunning. What a job this must be to do day to day....
What a lovely episode, Iain! So relaxed and full of specialised titbits which inspires me for my Gen111 Civic hatchbacks, a 1992 Mazda 929 4ws and the hardest of all a 1981Lancia Beta HPE!! ( yes, the most difficult! 😅 ) love all of your content and Craig is legend!so talented...and patient! Cheers and thankyou.
It's hard to believe in this day and age, or even in the late 80s, that they can't make a material that is flexible but will not become porous and leak petrol. Great video as usual on my all time favourite car. I've had a model one sitting on a shelf for about 35 years now, sadly as close as I'm likely to get.
Love seeing all the bits and bobs as you say. I never knew the headliner color in a F40. Always thought it was the color of the seats or dash. I have had the pleasure of seeing a few in person even on the road, just never noticed. Granted you have to really get down and look into the see the headliner when I'm focused on the seats and the shifter. My favorite F40 sighting was driving into an Indy F1 on Friday practice day. We were following a 360 Stradale proudly singing the song of his people, holding gears and giving it the boot between the red lights when a F40 popped up beside him. The 360 calmed down quite a bit. The 360 did sound quite nice but the situation was rather amusing. If you get the chance, I'd love to hear more on the history of F40 LM upgrades. You do a great job of covering all the interesting details. US DOT is weird, late to radial tires, and headlight upgrades but we get ugly 5mph bumpers. I have no logical explanation. C5, C6 and C7 Corvettes did get saddle tanks made from a rubberish plastic material but not nearly as flexible as the F40 tanks.
I can't wait for the test drive! Nico Rosberg, the 2016 F1 champion, has a channel, in one of his videos he takes an F40 around Monaco, not the track but other roads, he is really caning it, well worth a watch
Not only is a pleasure to get to watch you and your workshop work on cars like this, but you also have the ability to explain all of the inner workings of each different make and model. Even dummies, like me, can sort of understand some of it 😉😂 Looking forward to seeing it out on the roads....I hope 😉
Thank you for another fascinating chapter of exotic cars. I couldn't ignore the large dark saloon close to you as you spoke. Without ore-empting anything, may we be seeing more of the Jaguar Mk VI or VII? I'm a lad of its time; few cars have ever had the presence of that model.
I remember seeing a new one of these parked up in a chic area of Munich in the 80’s and noting how crudely some parts were finished. It’s clearly a purposeful functional design with no “frilly’ bits. Of course there was a large crowd round it. Thanks for another great video - keep ‘em coming.
I love Iain’s enthusiasm and am in awe of his detailed knowledge. I’ve been around cars for over 50 years and know enough to know that he knows what he’s talking about. It’s also funny that the famous Ferrari’s headliner was put in crooked…..
Hi Iain. I must admit the F40 is my ultimate dream car so any video that features one is a must watch. I have definitely learnt a lot more about F40's just by watching your series of videos on the restoration of this car. I can still remember the day when I first laid eyes on one and it so happened to be parked next to my old Holden Commodore worth probably a couple of grand at that time. The F40 in question was painted yellow and in right hand drive. From what I can work out it was once owned by the Sultan of Brunei and it is one of only 7 converted by Pininfarina. In regards to the headlining failing, it is a common problem on late model Holden Commodores and Ford Falcons. Apparently the foam disintegrates due to our hot sun and the headlining then becomes an upside down parachute. Motor trimmers here are very proficient of replacing them, they just replace the foam and lining as one. My Holden ute's lining is held up in a similar fashion as this F40, just a few screws with the sunvisors and slips under the B pillar plastic trim. I guess if it is good enough for an F40, it is good enough for a ute.
What happened in my seats (and I've seen in other F40s) was the adhesive degraded and became black. The seats looked dirty but they were clean on the surface. It was the darkened adhesive that created the problem and the material sagged. I had mine redone, and they looked brand new. Love these seats. Thank you for explaining the cooling and turbo systems. It is such an amazing piece of engineering given the quick development.
As a teenager I stood staring at an f40 at the NEC, also the Ferrari employees were of excellent structure and quality any young man would admire, a memory I will never forget, the employees were canny aswell.
Spine tingling stuff, what a machine the F40 is! As always great to see behind the scenes on a restoration of such a significant car. Thanks Iain for another belter of a video, can’t wait for the next instalment!
Doesn't seem that long ago that I was showing my lads an F40 at GrayPaul in Edinburgh. It was a £300K machine then. Unlike Frank Stephenson I am a sucker for a mesh rear panel. What a car and a spectacular restoration.
Just saw a magnificent example of an F40 here in Adelaide, Australia. Looked like it recently had a restoration done on it too, such a pleasure to get a chance to get up nice and close they are a stunning engineered and great looking car. Love your work Ian and Team!
Thanks for the video 👌 Can pass hours looking at this Ferrari … and take me back to October 1987 when I first saw it and for a 11year old boy it was love at first sight 😍 Anxious for next week to see it on the road
What an awesome car! I had a Bburago model of the F40 for a long time. Unfortunately I didn't have the change for the big version. Fantastic with what enthusiasm and excitement you talk about your work ? and let us take part in it !!! Thank you very much. Sorry but I have it translated by Deepl so it might sound a bit bulky ! I´m from Germany. Cheers
