How did you manage to get that job 😂 Did you not play colin mcrae rally 1 or 2 as a kid ? great to see you here you should build a sick n/a 3 rotor rally car next 😊 rwd one more fun, tarmac rallying is massive here in Ireland 🇮🇪 💯🤙👌
After only hearing her voice on Sam's own videos, good to see finally see Krista of the Iron Tum - who can sit in the passenger seat while Sam is driving like a lunatic, calmly announce the upcoming terrain, and NEVER get carsick.
“ don’t move the steering wheel fast “ ….. Obv never watched one of the goats Colin McRae , his steering wheel was constantly switching directions fast , while the car was dancing !
Thanks for having us @topgear and to @robdahm for being awesome. So much fun. If you want to see what this car is like at full tilt, check out one of our runs from the Oregon Trail Rally. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w06sxp_BDjQ.html
Sam's subaru was born out of a loophole in the ARA that allowed NA motors to be that size, but of course everyone's got turbo cars and hadn't thought of that. like Richard Petty and Gordon Murray, Sam has embodied the spirit of the unfair advantage in this car...........and it screams like a banshee
I've been waiting for this episode for so long. This car is so amazing. The American Rally scene has been growing really well over the last decade, though it's been around for quite some time. My first event was SOFR in 2018. Been following along ever since. What a fantastic sport this is.
@@user-180-mand90 Keep your eyes open. ARA (American Rally Association) has been doing test events and training events for a possible USA WRC event. Possibly in 2025.
So beautifully produced! “American Tuned” needs it own channel! Cool build! I cannot believe the co-driver job. Reminds me of watching Ken Block rally videos and just being awe-struck at the communication protocol and how the co-driver can keep their shit together…un-real!
there's no freaking way this thing still has the same weight distribution with twice the engine like this guys saying but otherwise it is very cool. i also wonder how much "comparable price to a built ej" means exactly & what the plan is if/when something breaks on it
As someone that grew up watching the WRC of the 90s I'm really glad to see rally getting the well needed attention. Carlos Sainz, Colin McRae, Tommi Makinen, Richard Burns, Marcus Gronholm, Juha Kankkunen, Ari Vatanen,.. .. Man, mid to late 90's had some amazing drivers in cars that could, even 30 years later, still compete with todays offerings
No they couldn't. The suspension and whole chassis design has gone so far from the 90's (and even farther from the 80's) that the cars of that era cannot compete with current Rally1. And don't get me wrong, I grew up with the Group B.
@@natel7382 yeah, unfortunately.. could be easily solved if there were more content creators into it. It used to be hard to watch drift events but now its all that plays if I leave youtube running by itself
@@natel7382 Blame the WRC for shooting itself in the foot about its coverage rights. Also the death of Ken Block doesn't help, for a while he did a lot for rallying and gymkhana being popular in the mainstream. Maybe his daughter could change minds once she grows up a bit.
For me it's the watchability and also the fact that the top cars in WRC all look identical. If the top competitors were in custom builds like these cars then I'd be so much more interested! At least with stuff like Drift Masters you get people running all sorts of chassis'.
I can only imagine just how badly that handles with the engine slung so far out front that there isn't even space for a bumper bar, let alone any radiators! (Note: i worked for Prodrive and we spent a lot of time and effort trying, and mostly failing, to make Scoob's with normal 4 cyl engines handle properly on the WRC stages. We could make them grip, or make them handle, but not both at the same time unfortunately because the front tyres were just overloaded compared to the rears. The WRC cars then came along, after the GrpA ones, and these were mostly based on transverse engined base models, so these could use clever transmissions to put the engine right back against the firewall. On the scoob trans the front drive shafts have to get to the middle of the front wheels so realistically there are finite limits on how far you can attempt to move the engine backwards. We even looked at a "split" front differential, ie a shaft and bevel drive on each side of the crankshaft to try to get the engine behind the front axle line, but the regs were too restricitve as to allowable firewall and tunnel mods necessary to accomodate this......)
From what he's said in other videos, the weight distribution didn't change enough to significantly impact the handling, mostly thanks to the complete lack of all the extra turbo hardware and shoving the radiator into the trunk. So it's still understeery and a bit of a tank on turn-in, but no worse than a normal Subie.
One of our favorite rally cars ever 🤩Thanks for coming to see us! There's even more footage of how Sam built the car right here 👉 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X8yzTruPk4o.html
I've always felt rally deserves more of a spotlight. To me it seems like the ultimate driver challenge. Yes it takes skill to drive a track or a circuit. But you can't tell me this is doesn't demand the most from its drivers
Not the prettiest rally car out there, but it sure sounds amazing. He's got a point that rally and motorsports in general should be exciting for spectators, and a big part of the sensation is noise. Imagine if there would be one race with only EV's that are lightning fast, and another with old Group B cars, which one do you think would have more spectators?
The hardest part of Rally and getting it even more mainstream, it's very difficult to produce a fluid and action packed live production (weather, remote areas, etc) *but yes, Rally is amazing...it truly is breathtaking*
Having seen, heard and photographed this car in person, the video doesn’t do the sound justice. You could hear it over everything approaching during a stage rally
How many CV axles does this guy go through a week? I had an 05 and a 08 Outback XT. Both of them ate CV's on a yearly basis. To the point of ripping the teeth off them...
So Cool to see you get your feet wet in rally and with my Buddy Sam no less... We'll be doing some private testing this weekend with Sam/Krista and a few friends in the woods for the upcoming Wild West Rally. Such an Awesome build and seriously Great Job on the fabrication by Sam...
One of the best modified rally cars out there. It's definitely all about the engine when it comes to this one but what an engine it is. Sam definitely found a crack in the system and I hope more drivers and co-pilots will follow.
F136 is one of the most reliable V8 engines out there. They are very carefully built and have no design flaw. You can do your own research if you don't believe me, there are many 458 Italia and California with over 300k km.
My friend, Peugeot was doing 252mph at Le Mans in the 80's, let's not get ahead of ourselves, sure this is more reliable than a standard Subaru, and the Hoonicorn is more for show than anything else, Ken Block was a pretty mediocre Rally driver and an attention whore so he had to find some way to make money
@@bzilla-d4i The Hoonicorn has demonstrated it very much goes. "Show" to me means it sits still. Top speed isn't as meaningful to me but to each their own.
@@zackklapman3569 in what sense does the Hoonicorn go exactly? It's a showcar nothing more. The Lancia Stratos on the other hand was a purpose built rally car for the road, coming in stand Ferrari V6 and Turbo Ferrari V6 guises. There's a big difference between showcars and cars built for Motorsport, have you seen the car Porsche built for no regulations? The 919 Hybrid Evo set a faster time around Spa-Francorchamps than the 2017 F1 cars did, now if you're going no regulations as a showcase of speed that's how you do it.
Ferrari are no strangers to rally. They even entered the group B rally era in the 80s with the Ferrari 308 GTB. So this seems to be an excellent mash up.
@@installshieldwizard3017 the problem with companies like ferrari in rally are homologations and power limitations. The only time they done it was in group b because of almost nobregulations were in place
That is one of the most insane build the quality and thought process that went into that. The way the cars moves and sounds must intensify the race and for other drivers you definitely caught my attention on rally racing
I love how everywhere you go in motorsports, right up to formula 1 champions, all say the same thing about Rallies: Nothing tops it. Its the pinnacle of motorsports in so many ways.
Pretty much bulletproof buddy, who do you think built the engines in the Lancia Stratos? Ferrari Dino V6, and that destroyed everything in its path to multiple rally championships
👌👍👏👏... Thanks so much, Top Gear US, for looking at Sams car!!!..this Subaru is absolutely awesome and sounds amazing!!..i have recently subscribed to Sam Albert Rally vids!!... absolutely brilliant!!. I wish we had cars like this rallying in the UK!!!!. Great job Sam! And thanks to the TG US team!🇺🇸🇬🇧👌👏📸
Hey Top Gear. Here is an idea. Is it possible to get a series for things like this as in following a competitive season ? Rob can stil host 😁. Hey we have Rallying, pikes peak, gt racing , drag racing, drifting. Pick different avenues of maybes pro or grassroots organizations that are well known or not as well known. It will give great content along with the already great content and something to follow and maybe get more fans. Think about Drive to Survive Netflix series and how F1 gained more fans or back more fans. Thanks let us know 👍🏽🍿
So many of y’all really forgot that Rob was a host for this “American Tuned” series, huh? This is such an awesome swap! Let’s see a “boxer” engine swapped for a “rotator”!
