I had my ferrets in a shared dorm room for a while... Washed bedding/cleaned their cage weekly, scooped the little box every day, used goodbye odor in the water, and tried to bathe them as little as I could. Sounds crazy but most people had no idea I had them! Only comment I had was that our room "smelled like mac and cheese" but I'm not sure if that was related to lunch 😂. If you take care of them right they smell less than dogs or cats!
I have a lot of those potty pads. I tried them with my 2 ferrets. They shreaded it to pieces 😒. Now we use pine pellets (kiln dried the horse stall stuff) in a litter box. I recommend it, keeps oder down, absorbs fast and cheap $5-6 for 40lbs.
Pine bedding is bad for all pets. Urine reacts with pine and creates noxious fumes. Essentially it's ammonia which negatively affects the respiratory system. Yesterday's News is made from recycled newspaper. Usually the safest option.
My boss used to have ferrets and they lived in her stable. She told me once she thinks ferrets smell like honey. I doubted her and the first thing I did when I came home from work was to take one of our ferrets and smell him, and, indeed, they seem to smell like honey. Or that's at least as close I can get to describing it. :D
😀oh how I wish my princess smelled like honey !!!! Don't get me wrong it not a overwhelming smell but definitely can't compare to honey but if you know the trick for that one please let me know lol
I’m getting a ferret and tbh this is rather similar to how ur supposed to look after a cat so I’m less nervous about and these videos are helping so thank u
I have a feeling the food is the biggest factor. I am a dog groomer and I have personally seen the AMAZING change proper diet can have on dogs in so many ways! The food you recommended will arrive tomorrow and I can't wait!
Great info. Even with being pregnant and having a super nose when I was around your ferrets I did not notice a strong smell it was normal like my moms dog so great Job guys!!
I really want another ferret. Im debating, i used to take my ferret to class in college because she slept in my sweater all day. My classmates loved her as did I
Me and my boyfriend currently own two ferrets and while we know a decent amount about them there’s always room to learn more, your page has been SO SO helpful!!
@@TheModernFerret Hi! I'm thinking of getting a ferret, I couldn't see the ferret cleaning supplies for the cage very well. Can you please tell me what type you use? And is it better for there only to be 1 ferret or have 2 ferrets so the 1 won't be lonely?
I've always kind of forced her to lay on me when she was quite young, when I first got her she wouldn't even lay on her back but now she'll just chill on her back while I pet her belly 😊 I have 2 kits at the moment that are slowly getting more affectionate everyday by me picking them up and laying them on their backs and petting there belly's heads, behind their ears ect.. I think handling them often is key 😊😊 so sorry didn't see this message until now 😱😱
I love how the ferret is just chilling the entire time 😂😂 thank you for this video. Hoping to get my first fur noodle soon and trying to do as much research as I can before owning one
I adopted my ferret and she was fed the Marshall's diet , her skin and coat was ROUGH, not shiny and smelled like a pond, it got better when I gave her a zupreem diet but It didnt help. I just currently was able to buy the wysong epigen 90 ferret food , I'm still switching her but her odor has got so much better!!! I also started giving her more quality treats that are wheat and corn free. Your channel really taught me alot
i have 2 ferrets, both males smelled terrible when we got them but after feeding them better, getting them desexed and cleaning their cage everyday they have almost no smell.
What a lovely video! 🤗 I have owned and loved many Ferrets and can’t imagine my life without them. When you touched on Marshall Ferrets, you mentioned the tattoos they receive. I have owned many Marshalls, but have only had one with an additional foot tattoo. After doing some research and contacting Marshall directly, I wasn’t able to get any clear cut answers about why some receive the additional tattoo. This may be bias, or pure speculation, but the Ferret I have with the additional tattoo is by far one of the most unique and intelligent I’ve ever owned. I’m wondering if you see any difference in the one you have? Sometimes my husband and I joke that he’s a supreme being haha Thank you for the lovely videos you make and shedding more positive light onto the Ferret community! Be well! ::sniff:: 😂💗 P.S. I have had the print you made of Moose in the chef hat hanging in my kitchen for years. It’s prompted many lovely conversations with family and friends ❤️
I got a rescue with a foot tattoo and never thought anything about it. I haven't checked my dark ferrets thoroughly but I don't think they have it. My foot guy is white and has a grey tail and a few grey spots. He is deaf and likes to lay on his back in the middle of the floor or at the gate. He also hates getting his feet wet so he stands in the kibble bowl to drink water because one of my other guys likes to splash water all over the food tray.
Moose is our little angel and has a foot tattoo, and Albert is our chonky speed-demon, and he has a foot tattoo 😆 Correlation-wise, they seem to be more cuddly than Newt (our super-genius), but I may just be wishful-thinking. I also reached out to Marshall and they said it's random - curious! Btw, the fact that you are one of the few people who own one of our original Moose prints and you just commented literally just made me SO HAPPY! 😍😍😍
I got used to the smell and don't mind it anymore. If they are given healthy food and are healthy, then they really don't smell bad. But I also regularly change their bedding. I like the idea of potty pads!
i'm binge watching all your videos + emzotic and pazuandfriends because i convinced my mom to look into adopting a ferret. i want to start out with one and then get another one about a year after, since i'm a first time owner and i live in an apartment. i've done a lot of research, i compiled a 5 page information sheet with the best brands of raw meat for ferrets, the best enclosures and bedding and the most reputable ferret shelters near me. i put a lot of time and effort into researching all the basics, finding vets that treat exotic animals and comparing prices, and clearing out and ferret proofing certain rooms in my house. it took a bit of dedication to convince my mom, but i showed her i wanted a ferret enough to take the time and effort into researching how i can be the best owner for them. i have a really important question though. my room isn't really that big, though i can comfortably fit a ferret enclosure beside my bed. it is carpeted though and i'm wondering if i should shuffle around my room to have more open space for my ferret and their mess so that vacuuming and cleanup is easier, or should i put the ferret cage in a different room altogether? i really enjoy your videos and they make me really happy, continue doing what you do! 💗
Wow! Sounds like you will make a great ferret parent! It depends on what kind of cage you will be getting, and how much free-roam time your ferret will get. I really liked having the cage in my room when I first got Moose so I could really pay attention to his behavior. But I know that the ferret nation cage be VERY large and hard to accomodate, which is why some people opt for the Feisty Ferret. Start with your room and shuffle it around to make life easier - then once you have a handle on things you can put him in a more open room!
I really appreciate that your videos are well done and researched. Many ferret owners only believe what blogs tell them about care and nutrition. All of your advice was safe and appropriate
Carpet is so unhealthy. It can never be fully cleaned, and stuff get under the pad and can't be gotten rid of. We had some carpet in our house, but we have either wood or tile now. So much easier to keep clean. And no carpet mites. (Jan Griffiths).
Had my Ferrets 2 months now, I watched this video a few times before getting them. I was scared. Turns out, ferrets don't smell. It's just their cage. Easily fixed by scooping twice a day. Use a non toxic wipe on the bars around where your ferrets toilet when you do the scooping. doing this, my cage takes about 5 days to get smelly. I just wait an extra 2 days and then wash bedding and then do a febreeze vinegar wipe down. Febreeze is good at removing odour of both the ferret waste and the vinegar. Just spray a few times into the vinegar + water spray bottle. The ferrets themselves don't smell. Unless they poof, but that's like someone has farted. It goes quickly if you open a window and it's entirely bareable.
I really want a ferret and i plan to get one for my birthday because no one really celebrates my birthday so it would be like a me day and alike a gift for my self
I keep my ferrets in my old room which is 2 feet away from mine and keep a baby gate infront of the door and keep the window open, I also make sure theres no way they can get out the window nor get out of the baby gate.
Where can I get your wall tunnel?? It’s in the background and I’m so amazed!!! I don’t remember my ferret growing up ever smelling bad. But I’ve met other ferrets that have very STRONG odor.
Thank you so much for posting these videos-I am saving up for a ferret and I’m SO glad I found your channel, otherwise I may have made some mistakes in getting a cute little ferret
@@TheModernFerret yep=w= Also, I can't really tell what the white ferry's name is. Or do you have two or something? So far my guesses are Edward, Ember and Amber ;-; thanks for all the help though! Scooter I can help a bit better with everything that I've learned, especially the bath, he'd jump out and scratch me and my brother. Ow
I used to have ferrets and I love the way they smell. Mine were slightly musky but had an under sweet scent, maybe like a fresh washed linen sheet. They are very loving and females gave me little ferret kisses. I very seldom had to correct their behavior, mostly because of ferret proofing my house where they were always playing. My first ferret was a male and if any of them were to get into anything, it would have been Sammy. He hated the word: 'No'
Sammy knew when he was in trouble, he would War Dance across the floor and Dooked and chatter at me. As if to say "Catch me if you can and BTW I will be making the next mess for you to clean up.".
Is there a reason you don’t talk more about a raw diet for ferrets? Easiest way to prevent smell is to feed a raw diet. There are plenty of raw diet resources.
Hey Veronica! This is a great question, in fact, we are just beginning our raw transition journey ourselves by taking @pazuandfriends diet course! We are documenting the before & after effects on our ferrets, which will be its own future video. This video was designed for new ferret owners and novices to begin practicing positive ownership habits that can help reduce the environmental odor of their ferret, but I'm excited to talk about the benefits of going raw as well in the future ♥
@@TheModernFerret I am also doing her mentoring program it's an excellent program he is very very educated in the raw diet I definitely strongly recommend anybody looking to transfer over to a Raw diet that they check out her RU-vid channel
Hollistic ferret forum can help you transition for free as well! I have also helped over 20 ferrets transition as well using the Hollistic ferret forum outline after switching my guy, and I still help more students daily 😊
...perhaps because ferrets tend to hide their surplus food.... Which is no prblem with dry skibble, but which can become a problem with mest, especially if you keep your ferrets as pets indoors.
Great share! Reading the internet it seems like the smell of ferrets is the worst in the world. With these tips I feel a bit more comfortable considering ferrets as pets 🥰. I mean I've kept rats pretty much odorless applying the same tips as in this video.
We just got a ferret so we have been watching your videos. Now my 6 year old son will randomly ask “mom, can I watch Hailey from the modern ferret?” 😂😂🤦♀️ it’s educational, so that’s great!
I really wish more people knew that owning a ferret was the same time and energy as a dog.. ferrets are not easy.. they do not belong in a cage! They are more loving than a cat. They are smart enough to make you fetch the ball!
I love the way my ferrets smell...their bedding, not so much though. I wash the bedding one to two times a week. Litter pan is fine as long as its cleaned out every day or two. The pee smells worse than the poo. I never bathe mine. Don't see a reason to unless they get dirty. I recently discovered the importance of a good litter. I use sophresh odor control paper litter with baking soda. The pet store was out recently and I bought a cheaper alternative and then went out of town for the weekend. House smelled like PEE when I got back. No more cheap litter for me!
I started watching your channel 8 months ago because sometime this month I’m getting a ferret (or 2) And i don’t mind the smell but i still watch this so my family doesn’t smell them since i live with my mother and sister (she likes saying she’s a boy though)
They just stink , my son wanted a ferret so bad, he was 16 when he bought it and I love animals so I said ok , however if I would have really did my research I would have never let him get it , it stinks his entire room up, we follow the rules but still even when it’s mild it stinks
ive noticed that all baby animals smell alot worse just like our babies , there poo will stick same for rats , ferrets , kittens etc people get them as babies and then try get rid of them
Do I want a ferret yes have you done research me:I have watched everything about ferrets other people:are you sure me:YES I have at least seen 8 hours of how to take care of a ferret
Would every morning and night or afternoon be go to clean out their cage and like once a week or twice a week clean there hammocks and all the fabrics????
I don’t know if is a mother love but my 3 ones I don’t get the smell and they get a bath once a one and had one friend told me they smelled but as mom I didn’t bath them like for a month so she has a problem🙄🙄🤷♀️🤷♀️
Hi, have 8 rescue ferrets, never once had to bathe my ferrets because I have a similar bedding routine, but use a non bio freshener, find the ferrets fur takes in the flavour of freshner, also because its bedding ,the body heat of the ferrets sleeping releases the fragrance into the atmosphere, almost like an air freshner
