I have used an uncoated hack saw blade for decades. I used it to prepare my rod with the serrated side, removing all coating and creating a serrated surface on the rod. Once prepped, I use the flat edge of the blade to throw spark. I use the flex of the blade to my advantage, and do not have to apply the same pressure but produce a multiple of times more spark. I have a whole bunch of old uncoated hack saw blades still left. I break them to size. To pack, I put a wood spine on the serrated side to protect from abrasion, but this reduces the flex... So pin-n-pull. Try it. You might like it.

I use the spine of the nail file on my multitool as a striker. I get the best and most consistent sparks from it. Plus I never use it for anything else so I decided it was best to get some use with it and keep my knives in tip top shape. One thing that worries me about it though, is that I might be taking too much of the feroserium off each time I strike it.

Something i found a while back from a channel here on RU-vid (i don't remember who so I can't give credit) is the Corona tool blade sharpener. It's a metal rod with a carbide bit attached so you can sharpen gardening tools. The carbide is significantly stronger than steel scraper and has a large 90 degree edge. It works better than any steel scraper and it also functions as a knife sharpener in a pinch.

I have found the 8 inch Uberleben rod to be a hard rod Josh. Just brought one because of all the hype. I have a Nathan 4071, erik x, bayite and ebay chinese rod. All 6" x 1/2" rods which are all soft rods. I find harder rods need a different technique with a good 90° spine or striker. Great video and Techniques. Thanks again Josh. I always believed that the pin and pull method was so as not to whack your tinder away but the point mentioned that there is more constant, direct sparking closer to the ignition target makes it even more the better choice.

I actually bought something like 7-8 different Uberleben fero rods after watching your last video on fero rods. I've practiced your one handed technique too. It works well, especially with a good sharp spine on your knife. I actually carry the three inch hexigon one that has the scraper with leather string attaching it. I have started many camp fires, and many other things with the few fero rods I've used already. I also loved them so much that I bought backups, lol. Thanks for the info!!😎🇺🇸🦅👊💪

I like the knife in the crook of the knee technique for one handed use. For emergencies everyone should have a ferro rod and know how to use it. But also for emergencies, it doesn’t hurt to have a lighter and a block of waxed sawdust. My philosophy is that ferro rod and even traditional flint and steel are amazing to practice for camping. It’s so satisfying to make a fire that way. But if you are in an emergency and you can start a fire the fastest way possible with an accelerant then use it.

Excellent breakdown and process for ferrorod lighting techniques. A group class a couple of years back was spreading tinder everywhere instead of igniting fire, which convinced me to teach the pin and pull method instead,. Pin and pull works like a dream and I'll be teaching that this weekend on snow.

The thing I sort of wrapped my head around this year is that in the end, good tinder comes down to small, thin pieces of dry material. Sawdust accepts a a good spark. So really if you have a saw and you're in a forest, you have dry tinder pretty much anytime. Stuff that worked well: 1 - Punk wood 2 - scrapped paper birch bark 3 - fatwood (i guess not really small/thin more oily) 4 - scrapped clothing

New technique on the ferro rod made better finer feather sticks and made more of them. Plus I foraged my local area for a better tinder. Got the nest going first strike. The feather took a little longer maybe 10 to 15 strikes but such an improvement on the day before. Amazing what abit of knowledge can do. Can't wait to binge watch a bunch more and keep learning. Cheers.

I've always been lucky (and gratefully so) getting a fire started w a ferro rod as I too prefer the pin n pull method but I must say this is the best ferro rod instruction vid on YT. Btw, one of the best ferro rod makers taught me that if you tilt your ferro rod 45° OR tilt your scraper 45° while striking, you will not get the ridges n bumps that I see on so many Peo complain about. Thank you for such an important n informative vid, I will share this w as many as I can. As soon as I out of the hospital. Have a safe, Blessed New Year
