Top notch. You are a natural teacher…meaning that I learned a lot without realizing it until it was finished. One tip: I gather up leaves and cut grass from around my neighbourhood. I always add a couple of buckets of soil to the mix. It composts much faster. I ‘think’ the microbes in the soil act as a catalyst.

Last year I prepped an area that had previously been covered with black plastic in summer to kill off weeds and seeds, so it was hard, barron, and no visible signs of worms while digging. So, I dug down about 1.5-2 ft and threw in landscape material, branches, ground eggshells, alfalfa pellets, food scraps, diced banana peels, coffee grounds + shredded paper, etc, . When I covered it back up, I also mixed in a bit of mushriom compost and raiaed bed soil. Then I wet it down and covered it with cardboard to keep the moisture in and for worms to have cover. Well, let me tell you, the worms loved it and all came to that party! 🪱🪱🪱 I dug this 2 months before planting corn in that section and it totally thrived! It's like a below ground compost/huglekulture bed. I planted a pumpkin next to it that was prolific, but pumpkins elsewhere took forever to produce both branches and fruit. I saw someone on YT use 2 gallon buckets to direct compost in garden beds, which I may try this year in existing beds. She cut the bottoms out, made larege holes around the sides, then buried all but 1/4 at top. Threw in shredded cardboard, food scraps, green and brown material, then put a lid on it. You can keep throwing in the small materials to directly compost in the beds until full of vermicompost. The worms also carry all that vermicompost throughout the bed, as well.

We are new to vegetable gardens, your information is excellent and will definitely implement what you do. Working full time, kids, and learning to grow a garden keeps us very busy, it does not allow much time to troubleshoot problems or learn how to do things better before planting. My grandfather started taking me fishing at about 5. We always (mostly him) caught a healthy amount of fish which we took home, cleaned and threw remains in bucket. Then he used a hoe and we burying them in rows in the garden. I would add the left over worms we did not use we got from the bait shop. He always had a nice but simple garden. All organic. He fished a lot.

I wanted to add one thing to all of your wonderful knowledge. If you like fishing, you can bury unused fish parts or whole fish deep in the planting hole... put some soil on top and then plant tomatoes. It keeps on feeding and produces a huge a tasty crop of tomatoes. ( After I wrote this comment, I started to read the comments from others... It seems many of you out there know about this fish fertilizer too! A big plus... it is simple. )

Jag, I was just wondering about how I should start my soil. You have been a wealth of information to me. This is why we love your channel.🌱
@kicknadeadcat
@kicknadeadcat 2 года назад
Start in the fall. If soil is poor turn it over, If not, do not. Turning over the soil will disturb the microbes and bring up weed seeds. Cover your rows with 4 to 6 leaves. Fall Shredded leaves are what I use they are free. Then cover that with a couple inches of a high quality manure or compost. Cover that with landscape material until spring. In early spring make a compost tea and pour it over the landscape material. Wait 3 or 4 weeks before planting. In 2 to three years you should have rich soil a least 8 inches to a foot deep. Do that every year and it will go deeper each year. And remember do not disturb the soil unless you have to. Remember, feed the soil not the plants……

Just over a year ago I started raising red wigglers indoors in four 3.5 gallon buckets, harvesting casting about every three months. They make excellent fertilizer and they supplement the leaf mulch that I cover the garden with in the fall. (Red wigglers love leaf mulch!!!)

Hi Jag, thank you for your outstanding videos. You didn't mention whether the items you get from cafés and the manure you buy are organic. Many people feed their animals feed that was sprayed, so the chemicals appear in the manure. Same with coffee; if the coffee was not grown organically, the grounds retain some of the chemicals. Please comment. Thanks again.
@holisticpoet
@holisticpoet 2 года назад
Growing crops this way does many beneficial things to the food that you are producing. Manure adds much needed microbiology to the soil. This can reduce moisture requirements for the plants by over half. The microbiology also eats the minerals in the soil. When waste products are excreted from these micro organisms, it is only then that these minerals can be taken up by the plants. This not only makes them more nutritious, it gives them unmatched flavor. Have you ever seen bottled water that say's: "minerals added for flavor?" Chemical fertilizers kill the microbiology in the soil which is why conventionally grown food is tasteless.

The problem I have is cow manure is that so many farmers feed their cows GMO corn and I don’t want GMO glyphosate crap in my cow manure. I don’t wanna put it in the soil that I have because it’s then contaminating the soil for my plants and I’m gonna be eating Glyphosate residue - is the way I look at it. whereas horse manure is maybe better idea & there are some people who keep horses up in the hills so I’m thinking maybe I could get some from them because horses hopefully are eating healthier by eating grass or non-GMO feed. What do you think?
