A couple of things. 1. I fertilized a little earlier this year simply because I had some rain coming that would wash the smell away. Then the dogs don't try and eat it. I'm also going to do a few things a little earlier just to give some heads up that it is time. You can fertilize anytime between now and midsummer. I generally do it before the end of February. 2. I am not following the manufacturers recommended application. This technique of a light dusting of fertilizer and keeping the ground covered has always worked for me and I think you have seen the results in the last two years. Thanks for watching!!

thanks for the tip ... I planted an edworthia (last year) and threw in some Plant Tone - my dog dug it up, and I replanted, 3 times !!!! I've been hesitant to fertilize anything since then !!! Now I'll be sure to watch the weather and do so when the rain is a comin' !!!

@@JimPutnam Phosphorus readily runs off when applied in the winter. This is why it's not recommended to apply manure in the winter, and in many areas against the law. It runs off unless it can properly soak into the soil profile, which it cannot during the winter.

It is 1 percent phosphorus and I'm not applying it to bear ground. It's mulched areas and two tiny turf spots. It's not going anywhere. Also, the ground is not frozen at all. My entire 36 years in this business is trying to get people to fertilize less.

I bought ten double glove sets from Lowes when they were blowing them out discontinuing them. I can never find the match but since they all look alike they always look the same it’s just that one hand might have holes that the other side doesn’t or the one might be quite darker and dirty looking from working compost the last time but the match is brand new because the match to the compost pair is somewhere but not visible.

Hi Jim, this video was so informative, helpful and funny! I love the playback on tossing the fertilizer. I always thought that fertilizing things had to be scratched in. I was afraid to throw the fertilizer to bare ground because I thought I was feeding weeds, lol. I’m relieved that pulling back mulch isn’t necessary. By the way, i was a former pastry cook. When bakers roll out dough and flour the table (bench), they throw the flour out the way you fertilize as well. So if you ever stop gardening, you might have a future making croissants and cinnamon rolls 🥐🥖😂!

If you check the labels you will find some like holly tone, Azalea-tone and Evergreen-tone are the exact same thing. The main difference from Plant-tone other than any obvious NPK is the amount of sulfur along with the usage of elemental sulfur to drive it up. You may notice that compared to some others like Tree Tone there is slight changes or the removal of particular micros like sulfur for example.

One more question- when would I do a systemic drench for pests? Do you prefer a foliar spray? Anything you recommend? For powdery mildew do you just wait until the warmer months and do a foliar spray? 7b

If you watch his previous videos he waits and let's the beneficial insects and birds take care of things. He also mentioned that the plant might be in the wrong spot, etc. If all of that doesn't work he gets rid of the plant. Healthy plants are less likely to have problems and if it's not killing the plant then why kill off the beneficial insects that could help.

I'm not sure why but fertalizing always seems so tedious and cautionary. I couldn't help but bust out laughing when he just throws it. Its hilarious.
