What does a festive pasty taste like? What's in a festive pasty? Is it better than a traditional pasty? Would seagulls still seek out a festive pasty or would we have to protect it from flying reindeer? Curious?
With the increasing number of festive pasties on offer from local bakeries, we wanted to answer these questions and more!
The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on RU-vid, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!
Unfortunately we cannot answer comments coming in more than a week after the publishing date of the video.
Frequently asked questions:
Do we do meet ups?
We meet up with our patrons and member on RU-vid Membership every year. If you would like to meet us, please join and you will receive an invite to the event.
The channel is a very time consuming hobby, fitted around our employment and family commitments. Setting aside time for individual meet ups, means that we are not able to film and edit our weekly videos that you love to watch.
If you happen to bump into us while out and about, we will be more than happy to have a quick chat!
Sarah and Andrew
What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII
How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
What is your dogies' names?
Sorry but we do not release the names of our dogs, perhaps you can make up your own name for him.

You need to try Gear Farm near St Martin. Christmas pasty with piggy in blanket. Normal steak are the best in the world. All veg grown on the farm. You need to pre order to avoid disappointment. Happy Christmas.

I’m following this! I’m heading to Cornwall from Canada for two weeks at the beginning of January, and looking for a good place to get a quality original Cornish pasty. I’m visiting to walk in the footsteps of my old Cornish ancestors from around Penzance/Marazion, then out to the Scillies. Love your videos!

My favourite is definitely the Gear Farm Pasty Co. near Gweek, discovered this last year in Cornwall and it was the best pasty i have ever tasted, rammed full of delicious filling and very nice pastry and they do scrummy chocolate brownies as well, a bit hard to find but well worth it if you are down around the Lizard peninsula.

Hi Sarah and Andrew, this was a fun video to watch. I have to say Andrew made me hungry waving the pasty around, lol. I love the cookbook you showed, wish I could find a copy of that one. Of course, I might need Andrew to translate for me. Wishing you and your family the happiest holidays. Thanks so much for all that you do.

On holiday we always used to get our Pasties from the Butchers in Hayle. On the last afternoon of our stay we asked them, if we wanted 10 pasties the next day to take home, would we need to order them. They said there was no need but if we did they would put them aside to cool. That makes them more robust. The next day we picked them up they apologised for the boxes as they had never had anyone order in bulk before. when we got home they went straight into the freezer. 😁😁👍👍✔✔

We had Sarah’s pasties in Looe. Very flavorful…able to taste the pepper…large…nicely crimped and golden…pastry could have been more flaky. I’d give it a 9 out of 10. So, must add: it’s the pasty that gives me a small connection to Cornwall. I grew up eating them in Michigan. Passed down from the Cornish miners who came to the Upper Peninsula to work. My mom made them once or twice but not near as good. I even found some in our local grocery store…frozen…from Michigan. Didn’t cook as evenly as I thought. But, sometimes you get desperate for a pasty. Will try to make at home someday. Turkey with cranberry and pepper sounds perfect!

Great video, and this looked very tasty. Here in Bergen, Norway there are no pasties for sale, so I will have to make my own now, I believe 😄 But it will not be Cornish one anyway since it is made North of Tamar 😊 I must say I prefer the traditional one, but I have tried a couple of others and they are all good. As long as I am walking my way along the coastline year by year I must buy pasty wherever it is sold, so I don't have the luxury of choosing a preferrerd brand. But we once had a lovely one at Chouch Bakery at Porthcothan. Very interesting to see the cookbook. The written language has really changed a bit since 1930. Merry Christmas to you from Torunn 🥰🌲🤶

A large steak from Philps in Hayle, lovely pasty, large chunks of steak and loads of veg. I always bring it back to where we’re staying and have it with pepper and a little brown sauce to help with the crimped bits. Had a beef and Stilton near Padstow about 20 years ago, that was nice.🍴

Great fun! My Cornish aunt (from Snives😉) always used to say, (on making pasties) 'when you think you've got more than enough pepper in the pasty, add some more boy!' As for festive pasties, I'd add some Brussels from the leftovers (the Bubble N Squeak on Boxing Day morning) and the cranberry sauce, as you said. Slight change of topic....have you tried the wonderful chip shop at Carbis Bay? Becks has always been the best, I had my first cod and chips there in 1973, I'm sitting here in Illinois drooling over the memories of a decent pasty (Phelps at Hayle for me😋) and Becks' fish cake and chips....yummy 😋😋😋

Interesting - Mmm!! as a complete fan of a ‘proper pasty’ Potato, turnip, best skirt, onion and seasoning in a shortcrust pastry case. I was a bit sceptical. However I must say your ‘festive pasty’ did look rather nice & you certainly made short work of it and enjoyed it. I remember my Mum used to make apple pasties,Date pasties, & cheese and onion pasties - really anything she had if there was a bit of pastry left over from the ‘main dish’. Have a good Christmas you 2 - always great to see you.

Oh! my goodness that pasty looked delicious 😋 I have a digestive issue just now so even it I could get hold of one I couldn’t take the risk of eating it….I used to be a human dustbin in my youth but ageing hasn’t been very kind with many health issues and allergies, but I still enjoy what I’m allowed to eat, watching Andrew with his enthusiasm for local delicacies over the series makes my day:) have a wonderful Christmas with your families around you Sarah & Andrew and a Happy New Year 🥳 🎉🥰🤗

Enjoyed that Guys, ow you doin my lovers?....my mouth was watering when you broke it open. I hope the bakery was listening, as your suggestion of adding Cranberry and pig in a blanket was a good one. You are right Andrew, as a fellow connoisseur of pasties, its a bit of a gimmick....along with Curry pasties and Cheese & Onion etc, etc. But its only for a month I guess.......cant beat a (good) traditional. Never found a Meat and sweet pasty again (found one in Polperro years ago - half traditional half apple).....bloody lovely! Still cant find any Splits....I guess that ship has sailed. I cant get your QR code to work, so I have sent you a couple of Pasty rounds each instead. Merry Christmas, and thanks for all the information and laughs during the year. Sarah, your Cornish maid accent was coming out today.... magic.

Aaargh! Stretchy pastry, ground chuck or skirt of beef, potato, onion, swede (alright turnip as you call it) and a little salt and pepper. My ‘bible’ in all things pasty is Ann Muller’s recipe from the book I bought at her Lizard Pasty Shop years ago.

Hello, we love your vlogs, saw the cornish paste one. Very interesting, I was told by mother (I'm 79) that the original pasty was in two parts. The main section was meat etc and the second section was a sweet...jam or similar. The crimped edge was for holding as the miner's had dirty hands, this was then thrown away due to the dirt from mining. That is the original paste.
@trudysimms1564
@trudysimms1564 9 месяцев назад
I'm not 100% sure but I think the Bedfordshire clanger was sweet and savoury but not the Cornish pasty, but I could ne wrong... You're right about the crimping though. Think it was arsenic down the mines that's why the crimped edge wasn't eaten.

LOL! So funny. Poor Sarah...no gluten-free pasties for you? I do like black pepper and have seen that in many very old recipes. I have my great-grandmother's cookbook from 1883, and it contains all kinds of fun tidbits. My favorite quote was: 'many breakfasts have been ruined for want of good coffee'. It also talks about dressing venison and making household cleaners with lard, vinegar, and lemon juice. I once made pasties with rabbit, mushrooms, onion, carrot, and sage. Tasted great, but I'm sure I flunked pastry and crimping. When I read something like that Cornish dialect quote, I always think of the actor who played Jud Paynter in the old 1970s Poldark. Half the time I could barely understand him, though I'm better than most Americans at British Isles accents.(Thanks, Grand Dad). P.S. Weird aside...for several years my Mom lived a few houses down from Tippi Hedren, the blonde actress in The Birds. This was in the late 40s, in the southern part of Los Angeles.

My granny was born at High Cross Constantine in the 1880’s and made a good pasty with lots of fillings. I remember especially her making pea pasty. Garden peas with a knob of butter. I think because they couldn’t freeze anything they used what they had a glut of. If you’re looking for a good pasty L.George butchers at St Newlyn East have good pasty’s.

Thank you for a lovely & amusing video. I'm not that fond of turkey. Judging by what folks add to it to improve the flavour, I'm possibly not on my own. The mixing of turkey meat into a Cornish pasty, might be the best way to have turkey. Until I have the opportunity to try one here in landlocked Coventry, I will just have to taste the closeup image that you included. Thank you. PS.
