Very good video , thanks for sharing . I bought the 500 today , not knowing you need the 700 for the anchors . Guess I have to buy them both at some point

I am REALLY enjoying the domino so far!! Thank you. So here are two questions: 1.) Will you be doing a video for the DF500 connectors? 2.) Could you do a DF500 connector video with cabinets, in which you have two center walls (internal shelving) which are also connected to the top and bottom with connectors?
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 6 лет назад
Yes, I do expect to be able to do something with the DF500 connector system but I have no date for it. I will not be able to make a specific cabinet but hope to show enough that will help you with your decision or plans. Peter

If you have to include a standard wooden domino to keep things registered, what happens when the piece that you're attaching only has room for one connector? You certainly can't use just a wooden domino in that situation without gluing it, which makes it not a knock-down piece anymore. How would you handle that?
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 6 лет назад
Hi Bob, That is a furniture design issue and one would only use the connectors in an appropriate situation. Petetr

Hello Peter, I was wondering if you would be so kind as to do a video on the df700 using the smaller connector systems? My budget will only allow me one machine at the moment and need the capabilities of the larger df700 but also need to make joints in 18mm Mfc/mdf and plywood. Any help showing this would be fantastic as I do very much enjoy your videos. Thank you, Bobby

For the Domino do you have to use the slot cutter with extra space - the lever on the left side/top of the tool cut a slight wider domino slot for the connect kits? Did not see if you changed it or not?
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 8 лет назад
Hi Gregg, Do look again as I make a point of showing the one and only time that the wide slot is used - when doing the transverse anchors in kitchen work top because the extra bits of plastic are used to make them wider. Otherwise it is always in the narrow setting. Peter

Peter, I really appreciate your guidance thusfar. I now know how I want to build my headboards. I need to ask (and, this is what makes me most nervous), your honest opinion about the bed "slats"(I don't know what else to call them) which run the length of the bed and hold the mattress support rails... What I am trying to find out, is whether you would personally attach metal based bed hardware to connect the slats to head/footboards or dominos. My concern is my perceived rigidity of the dominos or connectors giving way to strain of movement as they may not have the flex tolerance that angled metal could have. Truly appreciative of your time Jedi Master Parfitt. Please advise. (...You're our only hope. lol ;-) )
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 6 лет назад
I made our bed long before I bought a Domino machine but I think that I can help. First, the terminology that I use - the "slats" on my bed are the 20 (ish) pieces of 2" x 1" that run left to right across the bed and these support the mattress. These slats are themselves supported by pieces attached to the left and right hand side pieces of the bed frame. The supports are glued and screwed to the side pieces of the bed frame. The slats are screwed into the supports below them, each with a single screw at each end. I would not used dominos for any of this if I were building a new bed today. The dominos would be used as follows.... My left and right side frame and legs would be made with regular dominos and glued together. I would use the domino connector system to link the top and bottom cross pieces to the right and left side frames and legs. I hope that this is clear enough. May the Force be with you ! Peter

Peter, hopefully I am not getting on your nerves. I also searched through some of your videos (probably missed the proper one) trying to find out an explanation. At the 3:42 time mark and beyond, at the top of the shot, there is a block which you later use to support your stock as you apply the Domino to it. I am guessing that it is a parf dog at the center of the block. I am wondering where I can get something like that to support my work and if that is what I am assuming.
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 6 лет назад
I call those blocks "Parf Hats" and I am still considering manufacturing them. You can make your own very easily and they do not need to be made with great precision. Take a block of wood from stock about 50 mm square. It needs to be a long as your Parf Dog is above the bench. Mark the centre of one end and drill a 25 mm (1" would do) hole to a depth of just over 10 mm which must be enough to take the large boss on the Parf Dog. Then continue through the same centre line with a 20 mm drill bit. If the Parf Dog is a bit tight in the holes then you can enlarge them by repeating the drilling and wiggling the drill a bit. Peter

Dear Peter. I'm a recent fan of yours having disposed of my collection of assorted tools, concentrating on the FEStool range. Is the bench that you are using for this video your design or bought. If it is your design do you make your plans available? Your vids are excellent and help me to get to grips with my machinery.

@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 8 лет назад
I am having trouble finding the right answer but it seems that you need to buy either the complete systainer or sets of 32 of each type of connector. Perhaps an enterprising supplier will break some down for we mere mortals. Peter
@TheRangeControl
@TheRangeControl 6 лет назад
WAIT!!!... I don't get it. At around 9:18, you are describing adding 10 to 18. I am lost. I mean, I get that the initial 18mm for the midpoint of the thickness of the 36mm off wood. But, what does the 18mm thickness have to do with 10mm depth of cut? I promise that I am not attempting to "sharp shoot", but DESPERATELY attempting to comprehend, as I need to use my connectors on something that I am in the process of creating, but I do not truly comprehend how to dril for the anchor portion.
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 6 лет назад
The material is 36 mm thick. 18 mm is the distance to the centre. The system requires an additional 10 mm beyond that centre to make room for the connector. Peter
@TheRangeControl
@TheRangeControl 6 лет назад
New Brit Workshop Ok Peter, so that I am clear, the 10mm is a "set" added measurement for the use of the "Transverse Anchor"?
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 6 лет назад
Yes. You should have a small instruction pamphlet that came with the connectors. The one that I had was a small folded sheet with black text on white paper. It covered everything. Peter

Hi Peter another great tutorial I would like to use the connector system to build a new bed but I only have the 500 domino and budget won't stretch to the XL at present, do you think it would be possible to use a router to to cut the slots to suit the larger 14mm sizes required? I have a fair amount of Festool equipment and have been using it for 16 years or so but cost of XL is hard to justify for now Hope you get time to reply and keep the videos coming
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 7 лет назад
Hi Stephen, I admire your spirit of "can do - will do" but I do not think that it would be easy to use a router for this at all. The system does rely on the fairly close tolerance when the slots are cut and the anchor pieces need to fit just right. Can you borrow a DF700 ? Peter
@stephenoneill2253
@stephenoneill2253 7 лет назад
New Brit Workshop unfortunately I don't know anyone else local tonne who has invested in Festool equipment that I could borrow from, I didn't think it would be a straightforward task but thought if I made up a couple of jigs it might be possible to do I was just interested in your opinion in it. I may give it a try on some scrap and see how it goes and thank you for taking the time to reply. I could use an alternative fixing method but being a festool fan I wanted to use these connections.
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 7 лет назад
Hi Stephen, By all means give it a go. Making a jig is a really good idea and if you can pull it off then I will raise my hat to you. Have you heard of the Festool Owners Group (FOG) ? If not then take a look, join and see if anyone else has a better idea. Good luck and please let me know how you get on. Peter

New Brit Workshop hHi Peter I will give it a try and let you know how it goes but it is at least a few weeks away as I need to fit it around my day job, I have heard of the group so I may well give them a try but there is another on Facebook the Festool Talk Group which I assume is a different one. Thanks again for the reply best regards Stephen

That joint system is great, but isn't too expensive?
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 8 лет назад
Hi Hector, It is about Euro 2.5 per joint and so a table or a bed might cost as little as Euro 10 - now I think that compared to all the other costs that is really good. Peter

@SOLT_Mark

If dominos are so great why then would you want to spend extra money on connectors? Wouldn't the domino(s) be strong enough on their own? I can see the value in say..in place of a handrail rail bolt..but not in the examples you are showing. Perhaps I am missing something.
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 7 лет назад
The whole point of the connector system is that it allows you to take things apart and reassemble them as many times as you like. So perfect for beds that can then go up or down the stairs or in the lift when it is time to move. Peter
