Hey. To prevent kickback when cutting the dowel place it on two pieces of scrap that form an "L" and span the gap in the saw.

No one's mentioned the OG salt trick. Sprinkle a little table salt on the glue when you're laminating. The salt granules help prevent the surfaces from sliding out of alignment when you apply clamping pressure. Works a treat :)

I collect my dust on the floor and every other surface in the shop. Works a charm. If you drill relief holes inside the cirkel your holesaw can get rid of the shavings easier. That helps. Try it. I cut my dowels on a hand mitresaw. Its used in one of my videos. Also, james wright restored a similar one a while ago in one of his videos. Works great. But seriously, i think you will need to make a special jig that holds the dowel. If you do, please share ;)

Re: cutting dowels - If you have a small hacksaw, that is a good way to cut dowel. However, if you must use a power tool, the best portable tool for the job is an oscillating multitool with a high tooth count attachment. Festool sells their Oscillating Tool "Vecturo OS 400" model for close to $450 US, but it comes with a free t-shirt! Make sure the dowel is secured or the blade will grab it and the dowel will simply buzz around without getting cut... no good. But if the dowel is secured properly, this tool makes a great, clean cut.

Hmm... sarcastic or not, that sounds like a cool idea. You can't beat the free t-shirt :P

Tape up the hole for changing the blade. This improves the dust collection and I find you can actually see the dust being sucked back towards the blade. Also cut over a sacrificial sheet this helps support off cuts and also improves dust collection. I also noticed you started the saw in the sheet. Get a longer track and start and plunge the saw before the sheet edge as I find this greatly improves both the dust collection and the quality of the cut. To my way of thinking tracks should be approx 600mm longer than the length to be cut eg 1.2m needs a 1.8m track, 2.4m needs 3.0m if you are cutting to the full dept capacity of your saw. This allows 300mm over hang on both sides of the material.

@jspallin 7 лет назад
As always, a well put together video. I almost never clean up the factory edge like that, only when my cut list requires that I utilize that much of the sheet and I try to lay things out such that I have have a little more waste. If I need a piece say 4" wide, the first cut is made at 4.25" (or a little more) with the second cut referenced from the first at 4". That way I don't have to deal with long unbounded cuts. Also, given that plywood is often set on its side on less than clean floors the edge can easily pick up dirt, metal filings, etc. By having 1/8"+ of waste I'm not running my saw blade through any junk that may prematurely dull it. As someone else mentioned, pin nail before you clamp to avoid parts shifting when you apply clamp pressure. For those without a pin nailer, either spread a few grains of sand on the glued surface or drive a couple small finishing nails into one of the glue surfaces and then cut the heads off leaving about 1/16" of an inch. Then align and clamp away! If you haven't done so already, check out the Wood Whisperers wood taps.

Thanks for a great video. I was busy trim cuts of 2mm on a bunch of MDF panels and the dust escaping to the side was very bad. I made use of your idea and with the dust collector connected to the plywood, lots of dust escaped from the port at the back of the saw. I think you split your dust pipe to connect to both the the saw as well as the hole in the plywood. I used my second festool extractor ( a CTL SYS) to connnect to the plywood and the CTL 26 at the back. Absolutely no dust escaped. The best trim cuts in MDF I have ever done. Thank you for the idea!!

Fine video, as always. Easy to cut dowels on miter saw, just support them w/ a strip of wood; 1/8" thick for smaller dowels, and several times the width, leaning over the dowel/trapping it against the fence.

I have a Festool TS55 and the dust extraction on an open cut is definitely sub optimal. Serendipitously I have some surplus 5/16" steel rods so I feel that one of these is in the offing. Thank you. Now if I may, though you are clearly a very capable fellow, I will have the temerity to make a few suggestions:- 1. An expansive bit will allow you to drill a large range of odd sized holes for occassions such as this. 2. When clamping laminae together maintain the alignment of the parts by clamping glue blocks across the edges of the joint. By applying vinyl parcel tape to the blocks they are easily removed once the joint has set. 3. Taping a thread into plywood is not a durable design. it would be better to screw in a threaded insert. These are commonly available with an M6 female thread. 4. I have watched in horror very many videos on youtube of American woodworkers using table saws without guards. ( I am British) When using my DeWalt mitre saw however I invariably hold the stock material by hand and have not encountered the problem of dowels being thrown though I would suggest that to cut small dowels such as this that the tooth pitch on your saw blade is too great allowing the dowel to be caught in the gullets of the blade and thrown. Try a blade with more teeth. I hope that these help. The thumbscrews are a good idea. Where did you obtain the caps for the Allen cap head screws?

Hey Jack. Thank you for the well worded thoughts - I really appreciate it. Always looking to learn and improve, and you're helping me do just that.. Hope you do get to building this! Hole saws are terrible, I concur. But you can improve upon using them by drilling a few holes right up to the circumference with a brad drill or such. This enables dust to escape and prevents burning. Also makes it easier to remove the waste.
@toolify
@toolify 7 лет назад
That sounds like an excellent idea! Can't believe it never occurred to me to do that.
@mikescncshop

Two things. If you are cutting a lot of dowels, route a round bottom groove (sized for your dowel) in a section of 4/4 hardwood long enough to reach the clamps on each side of your blade. Clamp the board against the saw fence, groove side down. The dowel should be able to slide through when the board is clamped in place. The first cut will establish the saw kerf through the board giving you something to measure from. A flop stop would probably work best with this. Of course there is always the bench hook and hand saw method. I like to soak wooden threads with thin CA glue. After it dries completely, run the tap back through to clean out the excess. This method even produces strong threads in MDF.
@drmkiwi
@drmkiwi 7 лет назад
Good idea, I usually just remove more than the width of the kerf (because often the dings and damage is greater than 3mm). The downside of course is you lose a bit more of your sheet!

For the dowel, you have to chop downward I think. Sliding cut push the free piece inward and cause kick back.
@eideticgoone7035
@eideticgoone7035 4 года назад
At 11:33 you mention the minor issue of "a little bit of sawdust escaping at the start" of the cut. I believe this happens because the plunge begins cutting at the blade center-line, above and behind the vacuum extraction port. The dust has nowhere to go at that point except up and along the top of the work piece until the plunge brings the saw teeth into the cylinder of the vacuum port. If this is more than a minor concern, there are multiple ways to deal with this. Perhaps just blocking the exit, or extending the port shallowly back towards the blade center-line. In any event, I thoroughly enjoyed this build.
@willie_roman

To prevent dowl kickback, use a scrap piece of wood the length of your dowl to sandwich the dowl against the wall of the miter fance.

About the dowel, a sacrificial fence will help but that's likely to interrupt the dust collection.

When cutting delicate materials on a mitre saw put a full width piece of timber across the fence. preferably 50mm or 2inch thick. this does 2 things it fully supports the material and also as you shouldnt slide the mitre saw into the material and only pull it straight down it makes the angle of the cutting surface of the blade closer to right angles to the fence, there for pushing into the the 50mm piece of timber. This method can also be use for cutting grooves in timber by making sure the timber across the fence is the same width as the lowest part of the saw blade when it is hard against the fence. Another Idea for just cutting dowels might be to do as I said above with the timber but rip a 45 degree angle along the bottom of it. Not too deep but just enough that the dowel sits in it and you can hold it at the same time. Remember cut slow, stop the blade in the down position, don't clamp the off cut side as a mitre saw is just an upside down table saw and we all know what happens on a table saw when a cross cut gets jambed between the rip fence and the blade. A pencil mark is just as good as a stop when it comes to repeat cuts and is also safer with little to no risk of the stop moving. In the festool manual they call the action you should be using for dowels a chopping action. The fence adjustment you should make in the manual is 13.1 Auxiliary stop but Id run timber straight though then cut it with the saw to give zero clearance. Also check out page 19 in the supplemental manual.

This makes me want to get a track saw even more now. Regarding dowel cutting, if the dowels are 1/2" (13mm) or smaller, I prefer to use my chainsaw. I find the control and near finish ready cut ideal (sarc).

use a wood fence and base attached to the miter saw, limit the depth of cut then only a gap equil to the saw kerf will exist thus supporting the whole length of the dowel

When cutting dowel or other thin material on a sliding mitre saw (or any other saw), place a piece of wood behind it for support. For dowel, it's just as easy to use a hand saw.

cut dowels on miter saw with any blade by simply adding a full support backer piece. in your case something 2 inches or wider by the length of the saws fence long and even tiny pieces will stay put

Cut a 'v' groove into a an off cut of timber along its length to sit the dowel in for cutting on your mitre saw. If you make it over 45 degrees you'll get more grip and its less likely to spin/move.

Decent video, but here's a three tips: 1. Get a table saw, I know you mentioned one time that they scare you, but if you have the money for all these Festool tools (and you told us you weren't given them), get a SawStop or Bosch Reaxx or something, those things are safer than a drill really 2. Spread the glue with your fingers, unless you're afraid of getting your hands dirty, in which case you shouldn't be doing woodworking in the first place 3. Maybe hold the dowel at the miter saw, no chance of kickback, but again, get a table saw, I've been cutting hundreds of 4 cm long dowels with it, and even cut a groove halfway through on all of them, no problem

Nice solution! For the dowel cutting on a mitre saw, just poke them through a hole in a batten and slice through to a depth that just severs the dowel. Oh yes, remind us how much that track saw costs, given that it doesn't include such a device as standard, when said device would cost less than a dollar to include 😂

IF and WHEN you cut dowels on a miter saw, three things need to be done. First secure the dowel on both ends. I see that you have two hold downs so your all set.Second,cut slowly downward! You are trapping the dowel with the fence and table by cutting this way, NOT sliding into the dowel or really any small item you would be trying to cut(but shouldnt be-ITS JUST NOT SAFE!). And third n most important-get a bandsaw!

There are situations in which there is no "extra" to spare on the sheet of plywood - such as with building kitchen cabinets and you need as close to full half sheets as you can get. Of course the jig is not needed when you're in a situation when it is not needed, but that doesn't make this a made up problem.

I often use the miter saw, but let off the trigger before I think it will cut through. It’s easy to get a feel for. As the blade slows down, finish the cut. Then let the blade come to a stop before you raise it. Of course, try at your own risk, but I don’t get problems this way.

There is a better solution pull the green part down where you point at 1:26. That is the purpose of that part. (Festool did provide the solution to that problem) Please try it. :-)

How do you clamp the router (OF1010?) to the MFT?
@toolify
@toolify 4 года назад
It's actually a DeWalt router, shown here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v4yKWp_rOB0.html

No dust-collecton for the drill press?
@toolify
@toolify 7 лет назад
I'm working on it! Okay, you got me. In my defense, drill press shavings + sawdust is much more coarse, so at least things don't go flying all over the place. Poses much less health risk :P

This video’s high five by Brian Prusa! Want your high-five at the end of an upcoming video? Record a short clip high-fiving the camera (or high-fiving a friend), and upload it as an UNLISTED video on RU-vid. Then email the link to highfive@toolify.ca

Great video Kriss. Out of interest, which blade to you use in the TS 55 to cut Baltic Birch Plywood?
@toolify
@toolify 7 лет назад
Thanks David! I use the Solid Surface / Laminate blade when cutting plywood: amzn.to/2gtah8C. I've heard that the standard blade can dull more easily due to the glue in ply.

zero clearance fence would allow you to cut smaller pieces like dowels on a miter saw. Btw, it's sacrilege to use imperial fasteners on a jig for a tool made using metric standards... If you use them metric based tools, then get used to that simple to use and understand metric sizing. :-)
@toolify
@toolify 7 лет назад
Believe me, I'd love to use metric fasteners but they're quite difficult to come by over here. Also, you might have heard that Festool is actually now switching over to Imperial scales in the US + Canada... so they won't be metric for long. I know, we're broken :(

I have this saw and i have alternative solution which is cheap and fast. The similar thing can be done using the wide masking tape. Just tape the bottom of the saw (the tape will end under the saw) and also tape all the holes one the side of the saw. I use this method all the time. The secondary dust collection is NOT needed and the results are very very much similar to your results. Bye

For cutting dowels, I use a V-shaped cradle like this www.popularwoodworking.com/wp-content/uploads/12252_5F00_081.jpg For small diameters, I add a piece off the cut out material from making the cradle under my clamp. Good luck

Are there more details on this "router table" setup? It looks like a few accessories tacked on to an mft/3 which would work great for me. Photo of what I'm talking about: www.dropbox.com/s/2ndz4rntcq05i6j/Screenshot%202020-02-12%2021.51.59.png?dl=0

It kicked back because it is to flimsy to be held that far from the sawblade.
