Fetal circulation (before and after birth) maternity nursing lecture for students!
For nursing exams and NCLEX, you want to be familiar with the three fetal heart shunts that make up fetal circulation. These shunts include: ductus venosus, foramen ovale, and ductus arteriosus. In addition, be familiar with how blood flows to and from the placenta to the baby along with the vessels of the umbilical cord.
In this review, I will detail how blood flows in fetal circulation before and after birth, the role of the placenta, and the location of the three fetal shunts.
Why does the fetus have shunts within the circulatory system? The word shunt means to push or pull. Therefore, these shunts (particularly the ductus arteriosus and foramen ovale) help push or pull blood from going to the lungs. Remember in the fetus the lungs are not working yet. The lungs are full of fluid and resistance is high in the lungs. This causes the pressure in the right side of the heart to be higher than the left, which helps will this shunting mechanism.

Never ever have I understand the three infant holes in circulation until today. The way they were taught to me was all discombobulated and I never made sense of it or could keep them straight. I have learned blood flow probably a dozen times by now, fetal blood flow being the most difficult to learn given the shunts and what not, this is the best way I have learned it. You are the absolute BEST!!! A godsent from my perspective

Hi young lady..I have no connection with the medical profession at all! Ex military and normal Joe Bloggs ( 76 yrs old), a Christian and Creatonist ( anti evolutionist), I found your video absolutely wonderful, it so explained the wonder of a creator God. When you see how the "shunts" work and then stop at the first breath, a once only happening, it just fills me with awe. This could never have happened by evolution, this could only work if all the "mechanisms" were in place to start with. I have been blessed. Thank you.
