Kleiber was a perfectionist of total absorption in the music being played. His gesture and movements were so reminiscent of the moods in the music. On this occasion don’t you see him dance along with the music?
Most of the time Carlos delivered the optimum of the piece he just conducted and this time is not different. I espcially noticed his agogic variant in the main theme when he is not forced by the anvil to keep the tempo. Then there´s his caring attention for accompanying voices. And finally this is one of rare performances where the anvil doesn´t dominate the whole sound.
This is adorable! It is possible to really study Kleiber's technique in a concentrated way watching him conduct these Strauss pieces; they are compact and run the gamut of emotions and a lot of sustained pacing I never really heard them until Carlos!
The cadence Carlos Kleiber gives to this piece is outstanding, almost getting the entire orchestra to a standstill. Just superb, if you'd play music, you'd understand what I am talking about. If you want to see funnier, you should watch the circus.
