Paul, I watched the video about shed door. You are a great teacher. Now you are my #1 RU-vid guy. The small demo section of the videos -- is so easy to understand. I have to build a short door for my diy shed project. Watching your channel makes woodworking seem simpler to understand (for a woman who is a newbie). Thanks. -Teresa

As a builder, I like having my Swanson Big 12 in hand. Good job Paul. On any jobsite, as we say speed square, we as builders know what we are referring to and about. No need for anyone to get hung up on a specific name or copy righted brand! Keep up the good work.
@l.rey-era2413
@l.rey-era2413 2 года назад
Yes. His explanation of "speed square," is somewhat misleading. Because it's fast pace and region/brand affiliated, it looks as if it's not Swanson American made, then it's not a "speed square." When in reality, a speed square has a specific design for various, but still specific, functions. Milwaukee advertise their version as a "tater square," though it's almost identical in function as a copyrighted "speed square."

i bought one of these, then i found two more at the scrap yard i work at. people leave all sorts of tools and all else in cars they abandoned or get towed. never put three of these things together, they are confusing enuf with just one. i was going to sign up for a six week course how to use them but when the three were piled up on the counter by accident, took me all six weeks to get back from that other dimension trying to figure them out on my own. at least it felt like i transported, got my head spinning enuf trying to keep all the details in order.

@bryanshaw4434
@bryanshaw4434 2 года назад
Hey Paul. I love your videos but as a retired carpenter of over 45 years with the first by 10 years as a framer a speed square is not the best option for laying out walls. First it's slow. Second laying out a 20'+ wall the error grows every move of the square. I always hook a tape and run down the plates marking every 16" minus the 3/4" and x on far side. I'm sure you do to. But I always kept a speed square in my pouch.
@paulstoolbox
@paulstoolbox 2 года назад
I totally agree with you Brian! This is just some cool trivia I wanted to share it is also good in a pinch. I always believe that we should know everything about our tools and if there’s a function I want to know what it is. You and I both know that most people use a speed square as a guide for 45 and 90 degree angles. Most know nothing else about them LOL. Have a good night buddy!

Did i miss something? The square is only 7" long? You start by pulling your center (3/4"), then you move 14" over and add 1-1/2".. so arent you 14-3/4 O.C or am i totally baked? .. ill stick to a framing square ☠️

I call any blue, cotton fabric made pants 'Levi's' even if theyre made in some country ending in 'Stan' or China but it doesnt mean im getting the same quality fit or long wearing cloth less susceptible to fade so the distinction is unimportant, right? Pants are pants, right? Wrong. Thats why they invented brands. What other triangle thing also able to copy the diamond hole? None, anymore than Swanson can paint their red and call it a wykeekee special christmas edition. Why do you suppose theres no mom n pop shops in the middle of the mohave desert called Wall-mart? You think of a giant store not a 1200 sq ft hut with souveniers trying to boost sales

While this is interesting it definitely is completely inefficient. If you don’t have a tape measure go home
@paulstoolbox

Don’t get me wrong, I have 2 patents on tape measures. Coming to a job site without a tape measure is like going to the police force without a gun or being a fireman without a hose, I get you. I just like to throw information out there that can be useful in a pinch. What if someone’s tape measure broke and they were trying to finish the job? This would come in handy. It never hurts to have options. Thanks for taking the time to watch and especially Comment. Have a great day!
