Good idea! Where I live you can just buy the fitting, but I'm sure in other areas of the world that's not the case. This would also be handy if in a remote area, say off the grid you could probably use light heat from a torch and get the same effect.
It'd be fair to assume that if hose pipes are readily available then the fittings are, it's also highly unlikely there'd be plumbers merchants aswell had that been the case
@JENSEN DIY Let me get this straight. In other areas of the world where there's access to RU-vid, a heat gun, and spare PvC piping, there aren't threaded fittings? Imagine the market profit to be the one to introduce a threaded fitting just for pvc... or even a pipe threader! That way there would be no need for people to burn themselves heating up pvc pipe! Oh I think it should also be mentioned the heating pvc to the temp of modeling not only releases toxic gas, it also causes plastic to become brittle. So should anyone do fall on that one side of the world, please remember to use gloves, have proper ventilation and, do not heat mold pvc more the two times.
Yeah threaded ball valves, faucets, and threaded fittings for pvc are not a rarity anywhere you can purchase the pipe for this exact purpose. It's very common.
I've seen lots of PVC joinery on TV shows, but this is the first time I've seen a heated water hose connection used to mold a thread onto the end of a pipe. Super suggestion!
Notice at the end the hose end has been replaced with a plastic hose replacement. Too much heat for the OEM metal hose end. It would have been cheaper and easier just to by a male hose end PVC adapter in the first place.
I am 70, soon to be 71. I love learning new things and this is one of the most useful things I have learned. Thank you for sharing. Also loved the way you presented it.
Very versatile... I made a slingshot using pvc that can put a golfball thru the bottom of a 5gal plastic bucket from about 5 yards and launch a tennis ball from endzone to endzone on highschool football field
@@nigelstrangeways7330 it would probably take more than 45 minutes to do this and it's temporary so it will have to been done the correct way eventually
Great idea . We own a farm and our closest hardware store is about an hour and a halve away driving. So many times did I drive all that way just for a small piece of pipe to fit into some hose pipes we use . Wow this is awesome
I also live in a farm, far from town. That's why I keep a small stock of this kind of hardware. When I use any part, I buy the replacement next time I go to town. Living in a farm means thinking ahead. 🤗
funny, the hardware store is also where you have to go to get that heat gun, too! keep a bucket of spare PVC fittings in the garage and this repair is done in 30 seconds!
@@cpt.drucifer4866 lol how to run up your water bill 101 all these poor people think they learned a handy trick when all they learned was how to hurry up and blow your hard earned money instead of going and buying a 64 cent fitting
When your not a plumber you don't realize plumbers are either laughing at you. Or the only one with a heart is begging you please don't do this much better easier less problem causing ways to help yourself without giving yourself a high water bill or ruining your home. It's not worth it unless you just can't get it because of war or the walking dead becomes real life. Go spend a dollar fifty for a foot of 3/4 pipe a female adapter and a coupling prime and glue them together screw your hose bib into female adapter you did the same thing no heat gun required you saved a lot of money that heat gun for one use is not worth buying unless you just want to drop 250 on the heat gun. At which point you could hire me and save money. And you did not flood your house using sketchy handyhack tricks. I like my couch bed washer dryer and don't want to lose everything because I thought ai seen a real cool trick.
This is a great idea for off-grid homesteaders who live hours away from the nearest hardware store. Also if you're on a job and ran out of fittings, you can save a ton of time by applying this technique. Thanks for sharing.
This video reminds me of that cartoon of a guy chopping down a tree, sectioning off a piece of that tree to fit his lathe, then turning that into a toothpick. It seems to me that a tap & die kit would be less expensive than that heat gun, and a lot quicker. That's a tool all plumbers have
This is good to know, and interesting to boot. That said, you can buy pvc fittings/adapters with threads that will fit the female coupling of a garden hose for just about any pipe size.
This is great. I have a pvc pipe bender but this is great for making fittings with left over pipe instead of spending the time at Home Depot having to make up the fittings you need & saves on money. Thanks for sharing this 👍
@Tony Robert You confirm something that you have not even made them a friend, how can it be that, I feel safe and I can tell you that this can last a long time
I don't know where you all live, but nobody carries that here. And we have Home Depot and Menard's. Meaning the threaded part. The simple connector is everywhere.
@@PublicUnindoctrinator True, but what if you are not a plumber and live an hour away or more from a hardware store and only have PVC pipe? just because there are proper parts made does not mean you can't use a hack like this, especially if it will only be a temporary quick fix until you can buy something better. There are times when you just need to get something done quickly and this fits the bill, I am not saying it's meant for plumbers, they should already have the parts in their van or truck.
@@PublicUnindoctrinator Did you not read all of my comment or do you just not like people with opposing views and ideas? who is going to order a couple PVC fittings online and then wait for delivery if it's something that needs to get done quickly, it may not be the application in the video, it could be anything you are in a hurry to get done. What it comes down to is this, you are free to do whatever you want, but don't shit on other peoples ideas and call them pointless, sometimes you need to think outside of the box and just because it does not fit in your box does not mean it is wrong or even pointless. In a perfect world, we would all live 5 minutes away from a hardware store or be Prime members with same day delivery from Amazon, but what if you are running a remote small family mining operation in the middle of nowhere and you don't have everything you need to repair something? the answer is you have to be resourceful and work with what you have, I am speaking from experience. Personally speaking, I probably would not have done it the way it was done in the video, I probably would not have even thought of it, but I give kudos to the guys creativity because it worked.
You do realize that you can purchase a threaded PVC connector that glued to PVC . No need to waste your times doing it this way . WOW !!!! Is this guy for real ?
Its a really cool idea, I just think there is I high potential for failure. Plumbing is... finicky at best, then you add something makeshift in... after working on my 200 year old farmhouse I have seen it way to much...
Definitely a great idea when you don't have the PVC threaded adapters. Neat trick heating the end of the PVC for swaging it to fit over the other pipe. Going to start doing that for frames I make out of PVC. Also for threading as well. Both techniques would also be great when building PVC frames not used for plumbing. Adapters and elbows add up in cost when you don't have any money!
And I thought that I knew just about everything! Brilliant I can’t wait to use it. That deserves a like‘subscribe‘and this comment. I hope this helps you out brother. Captain Dano 🏴☠️
I totally forgot about that you are able to do this. Where I’m at I’m further away from the store and I don’t always get the necessary materials needed for my ranch. This will save me time and gas for simple little things and will be able to continue my projects! Thanks again good sir for making this video and reminding us to think outside the normal. 🫡
wasn't sure what to expect but this is sheer brilliance. that opinion comes from a guy who did about 20% of the drip line fitting work on our 6 acre farm, largely on my own aside from when a torch was needed... ... ... at age 4. came up with a few nifty new connection methods of my own around that time, using the creativity only found in the brain of a kid having fun and providing a needed and valued service... at age four. now, i am 37, and i can plumb AND i can also toot my own horn! multi talented
Got it. Age 4. I designed an interstellar mission to a far away galaxy and submitted it to NASA. I was only 3. They accepted it, and gave my dog credit.
Brilliant. Ignore the negative comments. This is good to know and I know it was slowed down to make the videos informative. I’m sure this could be done in minutes
This is a great idea to waste time doing things the wrong way and effectively making it take longer. This video is great for those people in life who spend more time trying to get out if doing something, than just doing it the right way. You can effectively do this with the right tools and fittings in 1/10 of the time.
@@_r.t- I mean duh, but this way you can reuse little off-cuts that would otherwise just end up in a landfill. Could also come in handy in a pinch if you don't buy enough fittings and don't want to transit back to the store. Either way it could be useful knowledge 🤷🏾
@@_r.t- I actually went to 3 different stores and a plumbing supply warehouse spent close to $10 .00 and have a set up that looks sloppy and over engineered . Will switch it out by threading the pvc pipe . Maybe before the inflation kicked in did a dollar get you something ,but we are in a recession and a dollar doesn't get you much anymore.
@@_r.t- not all of us have a car or a dollar and some change. Some of us are on a fixed income cuz we’re old! Not all of us are well off, some us are barely surviving.
I can't thank you enough for making this video . Yes there are fittings that can be purchased ,But this looks so much cleaner and better . I will definitely take mine apart and thread the PVC pipe . Beautiful and simple , just like the video . You saved mankind from nasty looking plumbing . Have a great day
Just because it’s “cleaner or better” doesn’t mean it’s proper and up to code, there was no primer on that glue joint and it would’ve been simpler to just buy a male adapter fitting and a bushing to transition over to garden hose threads.
The versatility of these thermoplastics never fail to amaze me. Excellent technique to cut a thread without distorting the tube/pipe. One can actually save a fortune with a little creativity. Thanks for the share.
The original female hose connector was the factory metal end which was heated to make threads on the end of the PVC pipe. But when the hose is finally connected to the pipe at the end of the video the hose connector is an aftermarket plastic hose end. Is that because the factory crimp was damaged while heating the metal connector?
The beginning and the end had a plastic hose end. It appears that for the purpose of making the video they just use a brass ended hose to make the threads. But I agree it is a bit deceiving.
How do you expect them to make threads with a plastic female connector? If they heat it up it will melt. They used the metal one with the same size thread to make the thread on the pvc pipe
