Well this certainly threw up some interesting stats! First, according to your gradient data (which I've found to be accurate) it's a genuine 40%, which puts it a way ahead of your other closest ones: The Corkscrew at 32% and Trooper Lane and Mytholm Steeps both on 31%. Interestingly neither Rosedale nor Hardknott are more than 26%, though I suppose they might be if you rode the inside of the steep corners on both. Secondly I think it's also the only climb where your rpm drops into the 20s, if only briefly. Finally I think it's also the only climb where your wattage goes above 500, which is a lot! Yes, I have too much time on my hands at the moment...;) Edit to add, will you be doing The Colwyd? SWs notorious hardest climb in Britain.

In an update this year Simon said he found a harder climb than cowlyd, the afon ddu with an avg 33 and tops out 49 🥵 & yet there is still no footage on this climb on RU-vid (yet) until mr WDC is on the case

Thanks both for the breakdown - I’ve not had the opportunity to look through it myself whilst I’ve been away! I think you’re correct in that both Hardknott and Rosedale do have steeper sections on the inside of their hairpins; I avoid the one at Rosedale as I don’t think I’d be able to turn the pedals with my current gearing. The guy who Everested Rosedale used mountain bike gearing and I think that’d be the way to go… Interestingly, TrainingPeaks tells me that this was my highest 5 minute power for 2021. Given that it only lasted about 3 minutes and the bits either side were me gently rolling up and away from the climb, that’s saying something… Both The Colwyd and Afon Ddu are on my list; not sure quite when I’ll get to them (deep Wales is more than a day trip from Northumberland, unfortunately, so they’ll need some planning!) I’m a bit worried about Afon Ddu as I’ll probably have to stand to get up the very steep bits (Fford Penllech, Hardknott, etc. were all ridden seated to try and keep the camera steady…)

Well done, indeed! Is there a word for vicarious breathlessness in English? All that was missing was the flock of mountain goats clinging to the cliff-face! 🐐😂 Interesting to see that your meter didn't hit 40% until the straight after the (in)famous curve.

Interesting question, and one I could have done with at the time to keep my mind off the slope... 😉 Good spot! The worst part of that climb, for me, was that ramp just after the corner. I think it's because you can see the first part and you get mentally ready for it, but when you go round the corner and it kick up _again_ it sucks the life out of your legs. Psychologically, it feels similar in nature to the really steep ramp just after the hairpins on Hardknott Pass - you get through what you think is the tough bit and then it gets _even harder_...

That does not look a lot of fun. I don't think that I would have made it up there. Well done for doing so.

Cheers! It did stretch even the definition of ‘Type II’ fun… The main difficulty is that there’s a minimum effort you need to put into the bike otherwise you just stop moving and, given the gradients on this one, that’s pretty high (for me, at least!)
