You may not want to tick NPCs/Objects off for healer classes. Some job quests make it so you have to keep NPCs alive and if its off you can't select them to heal them. Most other classes yeah, you can have it off if you get annoyed with targeting non hostile NPCs in battle.

I used this guide recently to setup my White Mage as a new player. I got so frustrated when I got the second hall of the novice quest that I thought the game was bugged but it turns out I had NPC/Object tracking turned off. I assumed it was like Party Healing where you just cycle with up and down on D Pad but nope.

I started on controller years ago, and 1 advice I can give is try to put the same-ish skills in the same spots across all jobs, this way in the future, it will mostly be muscle memory

I'm not understanding how to actually assign skills to the cross hotbar that when you double press either r1 or r2. There's no action buttons when highlighted and for some reason I'm not sure how to get it so I can assign anything there. Also when I hold l2 and r2 I get the buttons with action buttons but I can not assign skills there either. I made sure my hotbars were not locked like you said. Update: it took me a few hours but finally I understand that you assign the skills to the 1,2,or 3rd crossbar and from there you use the button combinations to access the bars quick and snap back to your main bar without having to cycle through them all. I'm sorry but the way you explained this was not very clear

I'm having a hard time getting stuff to focus what I want with the pad. Even with the Target 2: Cone setting, it still targets stuff across the room instead of infront of me, what am I doing wrong?

alot of time in my experience, its being too zoomed as you can only click on things that are near center of camera, or I should say it prioritizes near center. Like when I got the the crystarium, I can never click on the main aetheryte, it always targets something far away, but its far to big for my screen so I need to zoom out in order to click on it when its right in front of me.

Yes! Absolutely, I’m my opinion you need the double bar cross hot bar in order to play effectively with controller since there is so many abilities

It’s literally mandatory to use double tap L2 or R2 and hold L2/R2 and R2/L2 for alt cross bars this way u never need to cycle unless your using hot bars outside of the 3 you have binded to those actions but once I found this out my dps and tanking have gone up 10 fold

Ah, I so need to change my setting so I can see all my skills! I use controller because it’s the most comfortable for me (hand pain from chronic illness) I’ve only been playing FFXIV for just over 5 months so there’s still so much to learn both with gameplay and setup to make it easier to optimize my gameplay. While I’m doing pretty good in game, I’m still learning rotations (more because I want to do better and utilize the job I’m on as much as possible) but it’s a bit of a struggle with how my skills are displayed at the moment so things need to change there. Project for when I log into game later today (currently past 6am and insomnia is having a party)

I really nees to try this for sure. I used to play on controller on the ps4 but then I got the game on PC and Im trying to learn mouse and Keyboard but it just hurts. So I keep telling myself to go back to controller but I felt slower with how I set up stuff before. This looks amazing. Im also in the process of wanting to learn how to tank. I feel tanking with a controller could be tricky espcially for marking enemies for the DPS. But I dunno. This setup seems amazing though. Gonna try it.

Hi WNN! I would rewatch the video again while having the game open to help make it a littler easier. You have hot bars and cross hot bars. As I state in the video these are different. In the sharing cross hot bars those will be shared across all jobs no matter what. The reason I share 3 and 4 is because those are going to be used for generally utilities for the game like teleport sprint etc. In the next screen where I set up cross hot bar 2 and 3, is because 2 is going to be job specific. Each job really requires two full cross hot bars 1 and 2. Since there are so many abilities. The reason you do not SHARE these two is because they are job specific. It’s kinda hard to explain via comments but your welcome to join my discord and ask a more thorough question there.

So going into endwalker, I have discovered I have a slightly odd playstyle. I use a hybrid controller/keyboard set up where my controller is for all menus, interactions with targets, movement and camera, but I run all my job actions via keyboard and hotbar, this is something that for some reason i retain from FFXI on ps2 and even still to this day in XI. I want to move to either full mouse and keyboard or full controller (which is what im leaning too bc im so used to my interations and how things are with controller) any tips on making this transition easier?

My only personal opinion would be to rip the bandaid off. I use full controller and then use mouse to change jobs and interact with emotes and such as I find mouse easier. So it sounds like we’re the same kinda, as I use controller for everything accept for the above mentioned. My ui macro menu video is how I utilize my mouse. It’s toughie because they make both so accessible

As a ps4 controller player and new to controller, the thing I can struggle with is targeting. As I need to DPS as well as heal. I would love it to be more simple. :) I did see a guide that the dpad buttons up and down would select your party list, and dpad buttons left and right would select monsters. I would love to have that working for me.

Why does my movement stutter when using a controller? I'll be running forward, then my character will abruptly stop, stagger a few steps, then resume running. It's insanely annoying and gets me killed in content.

Very helpful but I’m still confused. Do you just use the pad to select the skills on the second crossbar (above the first one)? I’m not understanding how to actually activate the skills on the second cross hotbar. Is the purpose just to see what the cooldowns, etc. are on the second crossbar, while just using the pad on the controller to activate them?

Do you have a targeting video as dps and healer with controller? Really struggling with targeting NPC coming into battle to select and dps them

One of the videos, I am working on currently. It gets a little tricky for footage but hopefully within the next few weeks. Just make sure to check your settings and deselecting npc for when your weapon is unsheathed or sheathed. That might help. Here would be a quick guide i guess, Under character config, control settings, target tab, down to where it says target type, target closest enemies, choose cone. then tab over to the filters tab and the first to options have target cycling. Under while weapon is drawn, all i have check is enemies, aggoring enemies and duty specific enemies. make sure npcs/objects is turned off.

I use Mixed exclusively lol. It offers better control than Toggle and is way more comfortable than Hold. The only unfortunate thing about it, and with Toggle, is that you can’t use all 48 abilities, and only 32.

I only started playing FFXIV seriously a couple of months ago, and so far haven't had any issues with the cross bar because I'm only Lvl 34 on Black Mage (my most advanced class/job as of yet), but I was wondering if I would have to switch to keyboard because of the amount of spells and chromas I would have to customize later on. Thankfully your video exists! I find playin with a mouse and keyboard on a 2D or 2.5D game like Ragnarok Online perfect, but when it comes to 3D, WASD movement while using the mouse for camera control and targeting feels too obtuse for me. Having the Joysticks, which allows me to control camera and movement while spamming my keys without having to move my hand across the whole keyboard and missing the key because I'm looking at the screen and not down, is a godsend for me! Thanks again for your video, I'm enjoying FFXIV so far, and you helped make the experience much better!

very nice guide! Took me a while to understand what I was doing lol... though now it makes sense... I played this game until mid SB on a Windows Account, now I swapped to steam and I'm leveling a new character, but this time I wanted to try the controller... I still wonder what abilities I will put on the D-pad, it feels kinda weird to use, but the rest is amazing!

I have a little issue and since no one on steam or reddit answers I thought I might ask you :D though it's very specific, so don't worry if you don't know the solution! My controller is still working fine but I've encountered an issue that in remote play / using steam link it doesn't work with ffxiv anymore (every other game works). My controller gets detected by the game on my main pc and via remote play too, but with remote play the inputs do nothing, except for moving the mouse with my analog stick. Calibrating doesn't help and playing around with the steam controller configuration support doesn't help either (using a ps4 controller). Oh and custom configs from the community don't work too.. Did you ever encounter similar issues on ffxiv on steam?

@@PinePizza Hi K, I am not as familiar with steam but my first question is, are you connecting by Bluetooth or a cord when playing with controller. I find even on the ffxiv client Bluetooth controller just don’t do well in my personal experience. It has to be connected by cord to work properly. They would disconnect or not sense the input sometimes

@@BunBossFFXIV I've tried both, wireless and wired. My Bluetooth adapter can use xinput and dinput and both work on my main PC and so does wired input. For the Steam link I've always used a wired connection, the bluetooth adapter never worked inside of the app.

Controller player on PC here, as well as a Legacy player, though I barely played 1.0. I've been playing XIV on and off for a long time, but could never get used to playing with a KBM setup. I started 6.2 today, returning to the game after an extended break. The way I was playing with controller didn't seem to work anymore. This video is what I needed. This guide was amazing. I took a 6 month break from the game when my son was born due to no time availability. Now that I have some time again, I've changed from PC to PS5 as it's easier to pick up and put down a controller in the lounge than settle in for a long kb/m session on PC. I was really struggling initially with the change, but since applying some of the settings in this guide, the muscle memory tied to the skill icons has immediately kicked in with them all being visible on screen again, and I'm potentially doing even better now than I ever was on kb/m with the more condensed control scheme.

omg thank you so much! i am finally able to customize buttons/actions for all of my classes (yes, I know I'm slow) but I've been used to using my keyboard to use certain skills while using the controller... for years I have made this work, but this has costed me time during battle. this should be able to optimize my damage and healing output by so much. again thank you so much for this guide! i love how you showed step by step on what to do and what is going on! you have my eternal thanks! I'm in literal tears right now as I customize each class with their OWN set of skills on the cross bar and such. again thank you so much!!

Hot bars are floating bars you put skills on for pc players and can be used as a visual for controller players. As a controller player you will be mainly using cross hot bars as explained in the video. Keyboard and mouse players do not use cross hot bars. but controller players can use cross hot bars with there controller. Or put floating hot bars for visual abilities and seeing cooldowns.

Hey dude I’m having a issue with using my ps5 controller it won’t register my touch pad and I have changed the controller config on settings to PS5 controller and it shows a Xbox controller in controller config so I have to use select it’s not game breaking but I just don’t under stand why touch pad isn’t registering

hmmm I have never heard of that, I know it sounds dumb, but whenever I have controller issues, I just change to another controller I had and it usually fixes all the issues. or if you have one that needs up dates, idk if ps5 controller do or not, but like the xbox sereies elte controller need firmware updates.

@@BunBossFFXIV I had to hit the touch pad during controller config instead of hitting the select button so it works now but it doesn’t function like it does on ps5 but it’s ok cuz I have a key board hooked up so not being able to use my touch pad as a keyboard doesn’t break the game but apparently it’s a issue with the ds4 driver but thanks for helping and your auto target setting video changed my game play completely amazing quality of life tip every controller player should be using

The problem ive been having is targeting the tank after I've attacked an enemy, even when im hardlocked on the tank my heals still hit me unless i press down up down after everything i do.

Good point! There is a soft target and a hard target, or you can use focus target, but targeting the tank is just re organizing your party list for the tank to be second and then press down on the dpad twice to target

@@BunBossFFXIVthe tank has always been second on the list for me on the party list in dungeons. It's just the having to press down up after every attack on enemies that's slowing me down. Also is this video still viable I saw you replied to someone about things being different now something to do with a basic box being removed from the game.

I know this video wasn’t about technical issues, but I wanted to ask, if anybody else was getting weird stick issues when playing. I got a fine controller, but ff14 doesn’t recognize all the stick inputs. Sorry for interrupting, it’s a great tutorial.

depending on the controller, I play with the xbox elite series 2, I had to tighten the stick and recalibrate under pc and ffxiv

how do I set skills for the new hot bars? I tried to set them like I normally would but it only lets me place them in the original skill spots. Do I put them in a different way?

In the hotbars or cross hot bars? Cross hot you sinks press right bumper for Xbox controller or r1 for PlayStation controller

I switched back to console for Endwalker after being on PC (using KB/M) since the end of Heavensward, and I was struggling fiercely with this. Muscle memory was failing me utterly and this guide showed me a lot of incredibly useful stuff I didn't know about. I now have much less frustration and I feel like I'm playing the game instead of wrestling with the controls all the time. Awesome video! Cheers!

How do you actually read skill descriptions with the controller, when I go into actions and traits I can't read the description only see the skill icon.

You must have action and help turn off which you can turn back on under character configurations -UI - hud

I appreciate the way to explained this. It was in depth but also not so massive that you overload the players with information that would confuse them. I also appreciate your voice in this cause it was patient and slow enough that it didn’t feel like you were rushing, but also didn’t feel like you were dragging along. Finally I truly appreciate you going over what each setting that you mentioned does instead of just being like “boom click this to set your second cross hot bar, etc.” and then moving on without explaining what it does

On the topic of "Cross Hotbar Controls" I find Hold impossible to maintain for even remotely lengthy sessions as my fingers will quickly get tired (and sometimes painful) from the time under tension. I actually used Mixed because it allows me to access 16 extra slots by doing the right trigger / R2 to left trigger / L2 (and vice versa.) While I agree the implementation is cumbersome, it's the only setting I find acceptable since you can't quite perform at your best if your fingers can't take the strain. This is obviously not a problem for everyone (or, at least, I hope it's not!)

Only thing im smuggling with is putting the skills on the above cross bars. For example i want to put "Second wind" on LT 2 Up dpad, yet the game only lets me edit the LT 1 for some reason. I must be missing something...

Thought I'll leave this here for anyone confused as I was. There is a 2nd video kinda related to this one on this brilliant RU-vid channel where he talks about something similar(legitimate the next video in the controller play list), and he drop the info that SET 2 is what your top bar is. So, if you set your skills needed on SET 2, they'll be placed above SET 1. I completely misunderstood the whole explanation myself. Hope it helps. I'm now going to share this video with all my friends.

The controller support of the PC version of FFXIV is so mindblowingly good that a lot of the time my mechanical keyboard and 12 button MMO mouse gather dust while I sit back with a cup of tea and use my Xbox Series controller. I mean don't we have access to something like 164 total skills from different controller keybinds? honestly I have yet to play a PC game with as good controller support yet.

That is because you are sharing them. As in the video, you use cross hot bar 1 and 2 for each job and share the rest.

Thank you so much for this! It's been very helpful. What do you have your Job Action button bound to on the controller? The tooltip on-screen shows right bumper, but it does not work for me. I think I accidentally rebound my key to the wrong thing, and now the only way I can use the Job Action button is to click with my mouse.

@@BunBossFFXIV Sorry I'm not being clear. When you're given a specific action you can perform during dungeons or quests to perform mechanics or avoid damage. (Levitation, putting prey in a bag, etc.) is it called 'Duty Action'?

@@paulm3316 oh yes, I know what you mean now. I think mine is still default to when I hold R2 down it will also highlight the job action button. You might set that under controller configuration in settings. I would have to take a look at it.

I believe you made a mistake. In the video you said to enable sharing of cross hotbar 3 and 4, however you told us to use 2 (l/r) and 3 (l/r) for the customs.

Actually it’s not a mistake at all. We share cross hot bar 3 and 4 because that is what is going to be the same for all jobs. These are quality of life abilities that won’t change when we switch job To job.Mount, teleport, return as I show in the video. When we use 2 (l/r) it’s because this is not going to be a shared bar. We need one and two cross hot bar for the particular jobs rotation. So these abilities will not be the same when we switch jobs.

mmm I play on a windows, so I am not too sure, I dont see why you wouldn't be able to though. I play with an xbox controller but I know plently of people who have used the ps5 controller
