The Clinton administration promises a new approach to the AIDS epidemic - but gets bogged down in the politics of sex, drugs, and morality.
From the co-creators of Slow Burn, Fiasco is a narrative podcast that transports listeners into the day-to-day reality of America’s most pivotal historical events. Using original interviews with dozens of key players, host Leon Neyfakh brings to life the forgotten twists and turns of the past while shedding light on the present day. The new season of Fiasco goes deep on the AIDS epidemic in America, with a special focus on the early years of the crisis, when a diagnosis was tantamount to a death sentence. The eight-part series looks at the mystery and missteps around identifying and treating a new, contagious disease, and what it took to get the public -and the government- to care.

This is an excellent series, thank you for making it. I found out so much from this podcast that I didn’t learn from other documentaries.

I’m a full time caregiver. For the last four years I’ve been caring for my mother who has Alzheimer’s. We are nearing the end of the final stage. This path is difficult. I often select a topic to learn about to force me to focus on something else, help me exercise my brain and learn whatever I can. This series helped me learn so much about the AIDS crisis and illness/response in general. I’ve gained a greater depth of understanding and compassion towards others. I experienced a wide range of emotions that I didn’t anticipate. I’m going to listen to the series again because it generated new questions related to this and other topics and it helped answer questions developed through other limited AIDS research I’d done. Life long learning isn’t always comfortable, but for me it is necessary. Thank you

During the 80's in Edinburgh injecting Drug Users were quickly identified as a high risk group (Edinburgh at the time had a major Drug problem in the poorer areas of the city), Needle exchanges were set up, however Lothian and Borders Police Officers would wait outside to see who went in and if the individual had an outstanding warrant for arrest out on them!!! as you will imagine this stopped people from attending to get clean needles, however eventually police got on board. Public Health has to address all areas such as poverty, poor education , culture before even tackling the immediate problem, Equally we were fortunate in the UK that an unexpectedly conservative government was quite progressive in their response in comparison to other countries such as the USA.

Switzerland was one of the first countries to implement needle exchange programs, and later opiate substitution therapy. AIDS deaths and new HIV transmissions were drastically reduced within just a few years.

Australia went right along with you, and although we had a heroin epidemic in the 90s, we never had a second wave of HIV/AIDS
