FIAT 500
The Fiat 500 was introduced by FIAT in 1957 as the successor to the Fiat Topolino and is one of the smallest mass-produced cars.
The model was smaller than the Fiat 600 introduced two years earlier and was designed in such a way that as little steel as possible was used. The roof was partly made of fabric, so it could be opened, but this was designed to save some extra steel and at the same time make the car lighter. The Fiat 500 was intended as an Italian car for the people. Not only cheap but also easy to maintain. The parts were simple and easily available, allowing consumers to do the maintenance themselves. The two-cylinder engine was placed in the rear. Furthermore, the car proved easy to navigate through narrow streets and could be parked in small places, making the car easy to use, especially in Italian cities.
Until 1965, the Fiat 500 was supplied with so-called suicide doors, i.e. the doors opened forward. The first model was the Nuova 500 (1957-1961). The engine produced 13 hp and had a fabric roof that could be opened all the way to the rear.
