Normally when I do a test, things go wrong. This time? Perfect!
A long motorway test of the Fiat 500e coming soon…

Fastned responded to me on Twitter regarding contactless. It turns out UK Fastned sites did have it but they've removed the contactless terminals as they were unstable. They'll bring contactless payments back when they've finished testing. They've also confirmed you can charge without registering by scanning the QR code on the charging screen. twitter.com/Fastned/status/1413106291577397253

Thank you for this video. As a Dutchman I'm a bit proud of the compliments you gave to FastNed. The Ned in FastNed of course stands for NEDerland. As an EV-driver myself I use Fastned in Holland most of the time. In Holland there are loads of Fastned chargingstations, most of them right next to the highways. Although I also charge at home, Fastned takes away the range-stress when doing long distance trips around the country. I hope Fastned is here to stay and will expand to other European countries.

Hoorah for Fastned…and the excellent ABRP! The advice about running your battery charge down to receive good charging speed, is spot on. Getting to know an EV’s characteristics is crucial anyway, for getting the best out of it...just like an ICE car. Regarding ‘one peddle’ driving, you can quickly get it as smooth as butter. The way my wife and I did it, was to row at each other until we got it right (there are other methods, obviously). It actually only takes a short driving trip, for it to become ingrained. Lovely and smooth. And you really do save your brakes. It’s well worth the short amount of effort, and pain.

Excellent video. I just got my Fiat 500e Red edition. And LOVING it! Obviously it’s small but for me it’s perfect. The reason why I liked this video so much is that because I live in a condo I don’t have my owner charger, so I need to use public chargers. Even though FastNed is a bit more expensive I think I will be using it almost on a daily basis to have a 80+% charge when arriving home. It’s indeed a tesla like experience. That will also be my next tryout as the tesla chargers are “just” a 10 minute drive away, where the nearest FastNed is almost 30 minutes. Public chargers in my area are really low density so … yeah

5:39 with Tesla, the brake pedal is for friction brakes. Regen only by releasing acceleration pedal. Setting regen option to normal gives you max regen, by releasing acceleration pedal. If set ootion to low, you don't get more regen on by applying brake pedal. I use low for daily driving during winter to force using friction brakes. Also while towing trailer, trying to avoid to activate brakes on trailer.

Fast NED(erland). The Max Verstappen of charging. ! (Netherlands is one of my favourite nations. Worked there for a few years in the 80s) The Tesla also had a problem with speed limits when I first got it. I suspect its something to do with the maps (because government changes speed on bits of road faster than map companies keep up). Tesla has got a bit better in that it can now read road signs (sometimes!). I suspect your one foot operation is a bit lumpy because the Fiat 500 is a bit smaller car therefore the Kinetic energy it has for regen is less - so you use it up quicker and slow down faster (than say, the bigger cars). Of course, less mass means it can be less thirsty with the juice. Swings and roundabouts. Good review. Thumbs up to Fast NED - doing it right from the off.

Thanks for the 500e update, it’s definitely an interesting little car. Regarding the Lane assist function, in the Zoe it automatically turns on & off depending on whether It detects lines or not which I find really good. No need to manually turn off or on! Never heard of Fastned, I presume they’re going to roll out more charging stations over here? I must have a look on their website.
@tarbat
@tarbat 3 года назад
The 500e does the same, turns it off when it doesn’t detect white lanes on both the left and right, and indicates which lines it has detected on the driver’s display.
@MrEV
@MrEV 3 года назад
Interestingly it doesn’t do that for me. Perhaps something they’ve fixed in the update?
@tarbat
@tarbat 3 года назад
@@MrEV Maybe the update. On most of the roads around me, the Lane Control system rarely enables. When it does see white lines that it can follow on both left and right, you'll see the GREY coloured lines on the drivers display change to WHITE and it enables. Going near either line, and the line on the display changes to YELLOW. Before the update I used to disable Lane Control with the stalk button, but I leave it on now, albeit with the LaneSense strength set to LOW so it's not too forceful in correcting me.

As a Tesla owner, I can say that Auto-charge or whatever they call it, should be on all chargers. I was actually looking at Fastned when I was looking for alternatives to superchargers. Teslas do regen solely on the (lack of) accelerator pedal. The brake pedal applies the brakes. So it's very different to most, if not all, other electric cars. We've come down steep roads from mountain passes without ever touching the brakes and the disks have been cold when we've reached the bottom of the valley.

Oh boy: The Standard charging connector in Europe 30 years ago was the blue CEE connector usually supplying 21A. Guess what, you just plugged it in and left! There are still a few around. No need for an elaborate kiosk with a 32" TV, to basically just be a wall outlet. Tesla realise that simplicity is what makes electricity stay ambigious as we all expect. We have all hunted around for charging stations, downloading various apps and called provider support and still gotten nowhere. Charging needs to be public, no need for an elaborate infrastructure of middlemen who leach off a public utility we are all paying for to begin with, even in a way more complicated than cellphone subscriptions.

I wanted to get a test drive of the Honda e actually but they don't have any until later this month - I'd like to compare with the 500e properly. What I would say about the e208 is that I don't think PSA Groupe (Stellantis) have done a good job making their cars EVs. No battery percentage really bugs me! So I'd not personally get one of their cars for that reason alone. It also depends whether you have a family to drive around because my wife and daughter aren't a fan of the back of the 500e. Long story short - test drive them all and decide what works best for you! What I would say is I love the Fiat 500e and consider it a fantastic second car.

again: switch to normal mode and the car will crawl as soon as you get off the brake pedal. so you can manoeuvre precisely. and regen force depends on how much you release the acceleration pedal. the more you release the stronger the regen force. it is not "either or". last topp: try to avoid fasst charging because that lets the battery age unnecessarily much faster( more rapid degregation)

I don’t understand everyone’s obsession with one pedal driving / regen when you let off…it’s far less efficient than just coasting when you let off the accelerator. Coasting and blended breaking is more efficient

Personally I prefer it but I’d agree it’s a little disingenuous for Fiat to call it range mode!
@MrKlawUK

but you can do that with one pedal too. Just don’t let off so much. as long as you avoid friction brakes as much as possible you should be good. And one pedal is really just nice to use.

I'd rather not faff around with apps and accounts. How long does it take to get your debit card out of your wallet and tap it on the screen?
@MrEV
@MrEV 3 года назад
I'd also much rather use a debit card in most cases (and all chargers should have it, no excuses) - but apparently one of the common issues with chargers not working is the payment system. Having something like Autocharge makes things a little more reliable by taking out the payment processing step. Autocharge also makes much more sense for regular users.

@MrEV

VW are the main shareholder of IONITY so it would have made sense for that to support Autocharge. According to Fastned, their cars use a randomised MAC address which makes it impossible to support. Gridserve haven’t mentioned any issues though (they say they’ll support all CCS cars) so who knows!

I think the only issue i will have with the 1 pedal driving which i have seen other people comment on is it activates the break light everytime you take foot off and from people behind it looks like you are one of those bad drivers who presses the breaks all the time when its not needed, where in a petrol car you can gradually slow just taking foot off if you time it right and no break light, i guess in normal mode you can still do that...but then no regen lol
