That's so cool. A few months ago I read an IEEE article about using fiber optic cables to detect underwater earthquakes. I guess this is the physics behind it.

The way light is lost at the bend must have something to do with changes in how the evanescent wave just outside the surface of the core couples into the cladding under high strain, but why exactly??
