In this video we cover final prep of our mold and removal of the plug. After plug is removed, we layup our first part discussing important processes that need to take place when making your first parts. We also discuss a custom modified gel coat spray gun to reduce material usage.

What I do not understand is that after adding the wax/pva coating to the mold and you start putting the epoxy on does it not contaminate the brush/epoxy? Whenever I try this I always get big fisheyes in the epoxy making it look really bad!

Wax only in the mold can cause fish eyes if you are using thinner resins as a top coat such as epoxy. Gel coat is much thicker and tends to not fisheye when apply it over waxed molds. If you are applying epoxy only then you would be better to apply PVA only to mold surface. PVA coats needs to be dry prior to application of resins. There should not be any contamination if PVA is fully dry.

@@iccustomsusa8048 Thank you for the info. I'm going to do some testing with PVA only.

Best application is sprayed fine mist coats. Good luck!

Would applying gel coat with a brush be a dis service vs a spray gun? I’m looking to replicate some side window Louvers and I’d like to have the glossy finish with a black gel coat.

Using a brushed application will not change the molded surface appearance unless you apply the gel coat thin and you can physically see the brushed lines. But that will only affect the look not the physical gloss surface. It would be smooth and glossy with brush stoke appearance.

It is possible I have never looked. For me and my small molds this mod works well for me. If I need more I would go to a cup gun

Another great video. Have you used the polyvinyl resin yet ? I'm glad you showed demolding the part this time. I usually leave the wax alone and not buff off the dried wax just because I found that it really doesn't make any difference dried on. I'd love to see more of your videos. Thanks for making them !

No never heard of Polyvinyl resin. Vinyl Ester resin yes. I will be doing a video series soon on a very complex multi part mold with inserts soon a I plan to do a custom motorcycle fuel tank within the next week or so....

Fiberglass supply’s have hard plastic wedges for pulling parts. When making a mold make a wood frame that sits flat on a table & a few ribs to follow the contour of the part then glass that onto the mold. It makes the mold stable & a lot easier to do any glass work on .

I make my wedges from oil filled nylon and hardwood, I don’t use frames as it makes the mold more bulky as I have a lot of molds so storage of extra bulk is not wanted. Plus adding frames “can potentially” skew your mold depending upon shape
