Dr Valery Rees has spent decades translating the letters of Marsilio Ficino. Why is Ficino so important?
Marsilio Ficino was a philosopher, born in the 15th Century, living in Florence at the time of its greatest brilliance. Ficino trained as a physician, became a philosopher, a priest, a linguist, a musician and thinker, interested in every aspect of life. He's best known for translating the works of ancient Greece into Latin.
When the works of Plato became available in Greek presented to his patron, Ficino was attracted to learn enough Greek to translate it for the Medici family. Then he wrote commentaries to share his understanding.
Big questions of knowledge, beauty and justice were answered in Plato. How to find happiness, and deal with the dramas of life. He was able to reinvigorate Christian thinking of his time.
Ficino lived in a golden age, with artists, mathematical discoveries, paintings, palaces etc. But there were also epidemics, famine, political and economic crises, war, and religious fanaticism.
Ficino is still relevant; we are experiencing so many of the same problems. His philosophy can guide and restore hope to us today. Wisdom, prudence, justice and perseverance are virtues that are still needed.
Translators in the School of Philosophy and Economic Science have published 11 volumes of Ficino's letters to date. These books are well received in the academic world, but they have a much wider audience too. Their warmth and vitality make the letters appealing to readers.
The School of Philosophy and Economic Science offers courses in practical philosophy and economics with justice as well as other subjects. It aims to approach philosophy in a practical way, encouraging students to apply philosophy in their lives. The School also introduces a mindfulness-type exercise leading eventually to mantra meditation.

Thank you for posting this - what a positive influencer - I had heard of him many years ago but never read his letters. However I find myself with so much to read concerning the current problems both in the UK and abroad, so I do not think I can study him at the moment. But appreciate the life wisdom this post shared

Hi Zoe, Thanks for this great comment. Ficino also had extremely turbulent times to contend with... So he'll be there for you when you have more time and leisure. Thanks for watching.

In the book "History of anticulture" published in Poland, it is written that Ficino dealt with Orphism and black magic.

The sentence quoted at the end of the film would confirm the pagan views attributed to Ficino.

Hi Michaszczepaniuk. We asked Valery to reply. She says: "The closing sentence of the film - 'We must live today, since he who lives for tomorrow never lives' - expresses a sentiment shared in other Christian writers. Ficino was certainly interested in Orpheus, and in some ideas of magic, but strongly defends them as part of a wholly beneficial philosophical tradition derived from antiquity and capable of being combined with a devout Christian outlook. To associate him with black magic, or to consider him a pagan, is a total misunderstanding." If you'd like to ask Valery any further questions, do email hello@fses.org Thanks for watching!

Lovely talk - I’m going to Florence for month of February 2024 to study Italian and Florentine Renaissance art - Is there any other practical study I could do on the medici and specificaly on ficino

Hi Mr Tommonks - yes, definitely. We asked Valery about this and she gave a long answer, so we'll just paste in the first part here. If you'd like to ask her more about this, please email hello@fses.org , FAO Valery Rees. 1. The first volume of The Letters of Marsilio Ficino in its revised edition is a good place to start reading. 2. A recent lively and well written account of literary life in Florence is The Bookseller of Florence, by Ross King (2021). 3. An older but well respected book on the Medici is Christopher Hibbert, The Rise and Fall of the House of Medici (1974) . Have a great trip!
