This is a survival story of my Ficus houseplant in a container, not a bonsai (yet). It died due to Winter damage and revive itself 10 month later! Just wanted to share the story to show how plants can survive extreme conditions and treatments. I was very sad to see this plant die since it was with me for over 14 years, but I am very happy to see it sprout new leaves and I plan to reincarnate it into a bonsai, in the future. I will post update video of this plant.

I had a similar thing happen so cut the dead stuff all the way down like you would for a lantana, and it started over with leafing like yours and grew back into a beautiful tree.

Incredible! What a wonderful story. My beloved ficus given to me in about 1996 nearly succumbed after one night on the porch when it went to freezing. I was heartbroken. But it's come back again and I'll be careful from now on!

My Ficus Benjamin also had (1) yellowing leaves (2) leaves then turned brown, curled, crispy (3) then leaves fell off I do not have a "green thumb" - logically, I thought "NOT GETTING ENOUGH WATER!" Aha - the 'bubbler' sprinkler at the base of the Ficus tree was not emitting ANY water. The tree is growing (on purpose) through the concrete slab foundation next to a sliding glass door and there's a small garden outside the sliding door with its own sprinkler head (prior owner of the house did all that). The sprinklers come on at 4am. I didn't have any chance to detect the 'no water' for the tree. "The Ficus is dead!" I found the outside sprinkler spraying a FOUNTAIN of water, stealing all water pressure from the Ficus tree's bubbler. I fixed the outside sprinkler. Then the bubbler had its water pressure restored. AFTER 4 MINUTES of the bubbler being on, THERE WAS A *_SMALL POND_* OF WATER at the base of the Ficus. So because the Ficus growing through the foundation hole shares the SAME DIRT GROUND as the garden, that broken outside sprinkler FLOODED THE GROUND. The "brown, very dry, curling up and falling off" leaves symptom of the Ficus was due to TOO MUCH WATER. The person who designed the Ficus tree to exhibit 'extreme dryness' when there's too much water NEEDS TO BE FIRED I stopped all watering for the Ficus bubbler and garden sprinkler. The Ficus tree is REVIVING. .

Thanks... This gave me some hope for my little tree. Dying not from winter but 100 degree summer in South Carolina... I only left it out for two days and it turned yellow...

I had a ficus tree that was pot bound and it boar a hole in the bottom of the heavy plastic container to set up a survival system. It netted a new pot out of roots and created a new environment to survive in. I took pictures of it, it was s amazing! The power of nature!!

What happened to the ficus after that? How did you react? How does it look like today?

I have a similiar story with my juniper. I thought it was dead so I left it out all winter and in early april I found it laying on my porch still green but blown completely out of it's pot. I repotted it in a weak attempt to see if I could save it and it's been pushing new growth like crazy ever since! I would love to see what you do with this ficus. Benjaminas tend to push a lot of growth rather quickly so it might not take as long as you think once it gets back on it's 'legs'. Great video!

This past February my furnance failed and used electric heaters in living room and kitchen because they couldnt get us a new furnance for 5 days!! My 40 YEAR OLD FICUS was always brought in the fall onto our heated porch. It appeared fine... until ALL THE LEAVES DRIED UP OR FELL OFF. Looked exactly like the one pictured. 40 YEARS OLD!!!! I hope a miracle happens. Can't bring it out until mid May here in Connecticut. Fingers crossed. Besides losing a beloved sister, three close friends & three dear pets.... this is the last blow in this horrific year.

Once the leaves of a tree for "unknown" reasons start te wither, prune back to the trunck. Works 95% of the time.

No Trust Hi. Should the inside of a ficus tree branch be green all the way through? I recently pruned a suffering ficus and there is a circle of green under the bark and then white in the centre.

@@kb9719 yup that means the tree is still alive. That green layer is the cambium layer, where the sap and water and nutrients flows in the tree

My girlfriends Mom had two Mimosa trees growing around her house. Sadly after the last two winters we had, it was so harshly cold that they had died, or so we thought. They ended up just sprouting out at the trunk. They cut down the one in the front because they were afraid it were to fall on the house eventually. Believe it or not, it started growing out of the trunk again. They're leaving it there and seeing what it's gonna do. Shouldn't be that cold of a winter so who knows, maybe it'll grow back into that huge tree again some day.

That dead wood is going to be fantastic carving material. You've got the makings of a fantastic cascade here. One drastic chop shash break of the dead tree on top.Graham Potter's got some great vids on this kinda technique here on RU-vid. Chop chop carve. :D

I was about to throw out mine, but after seeing this I still have hope that it will come back, I cut everything dead down and left a bit of the stem and started watering it again, it's about as old as me (22yo) and I don't wanna get rid of it. Fingers crossed:)

Hello Its a great survival story. We have a mango tree which was planted by my grandmother in 1984. Now its dying its almost dead with no leaf left on it. It was so healthy. It gave fruit this summer. But just within a month it has died. All the leaves started falling and turned brown. I cry a lot. We love this tree so much as we have so memories related to this tree. Please tell me hoe to save it?

I live in the Eastern Cape of South Africa and mine do better outside...went from a 30cm potplant to a 1,5meter tree within 3years. I think perhaps the cold kills it and not so much the sun.

Can you cut off the upper portion of the dead trunk somewhere above the new growth and try grafting on the remaining portion of the trunk where it is still alive?
@optimusprimo2012
@optimusprimo2012 8 лет назад
if you cut the top every 6 inches you will that the tree still alive when you get to the part that still alive green . about halfe the tree the tree will come back.

I was getting one for Christmas and it was at my nannies house. She forgot to water it and the leaves have turned black and they are falling off. Is that the end of the ficus?
