Happy New Year! This is my first video of the year and the first video I've uploaded since our second child was born in late September. It feels good to be back in the studio playing around, and for my first video I decided to do something that is a first for my channel... a fiddle tune. I actually started out playing bluegrass and fiddle tunes before getting so into jazz, and I still enjoy picking a good fiddle tune. Temperance Reel is one of my favorites that I don't get tired of.
For my backing track I got some help from guitar legend and Nashville buddy Jake Stargel. His rhythm sounds great on this relaxed and bouncy tempo.

Wonderful :) Any practice tips for nailing those moves up the neck and playing in 2nd and 3rd position? How did you get to the point where you could do that?

Thanks! A couple suggestions. First, learn specific shifting moves that sound good because of the note selection. I basically never shift how you would if you were playing a scale consecutively. At the same time that a scale is not interesting, it’s also hard to shift positions. Rather, a move that slides and jumps around in a musical way is much easier to shift. And finally, isolate one shifting idea at a time. It can seem overwhelming looking at the whole finger board at once, but at any given moment you need to know what you can do in that position. So just start expanding your territory of the neck slowly and go from there. Let me recommend my “shifting positions” instructional videos from my website. Cheers
