Castro, unlike other Communist leaders such Lenin or Mao, became converted to the ideology AFTER he took power while the others were Communists before sezing power. In fact the transition years (1959-1962) demonstrated how ideologically ambiguous the Revolution was. Khrushchev said it best to reporters in NY in 1960: "Fidel is not a Communist, but will be one in two years thanks to American Pressure". In 1962, that prophecy becomes true.
Are you telling me that the people of Cuba gave Castro a blank check to create any type of system he desired? Why would anyone support him without knowing what he intended to create? He is already wearing the hat that is very popular in communist regimes. And what about the elections he promised? Was the United States responsible for him never giving the elections he promised? No. That was his own doing. He nationalized foreign assets BEFORE the US embargo. The embargo was a response to the theft of the property of American citizens. This man was already a communist before his reign started. It's ridiculous to claim otherwise. He shut himself and his country off from the rest of the world by not allowing any western ideas except communism to permeate his society. If his society wasn't scared of ideas (as he claims in this video) why censor all competing ideas? Because that's what dictators do. And more specifically, that's what communist dictators do. There is no room for any other ideas under these horrible regimes. That's why there is only one political party in Cuba. "Democracy" in his mind and other communist wackos means one party, one idea, no elections, confiscation of private property. Check, check, check and check.
It will always be hard for people in the Western world to form a clear opinion about Castro. The propaganda from western sources made him out to be worse than he was, whereas Castro's own propaganda made him out to be better than he was. As is often the case, the truth probably lies in the middle somewhere.
@@BradsPitt Communism doesn't work and I oppose it. Castro wasn't great, but it's hard to figure out exactly what individuals like him were actually like. The US likes to take things that already have problems and then make up a bunch of hyperbolic nonsense to add onto the problems. The war on drugs is a good example of this. Trying to get a clear picture of someone considered an enemy of the US is like trying to get a clear understanding of marijuana by watching Reefer Madness.
@@Polyfusia he was a dictator that stayed in power for over 50 years by force, without allowing the people of Cuba to have a choice in leadership, who banned religion for decades, threw homesexuals in force labor camps, eliminated freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, freedom to travel among other rights. What is the confusion?
@@DavidMars Actually Castro was more progressive towards homosexuals in the later half of his time in power. It was because of Castro that same sex marriage was eventually legalized. As for staying in power by force, that is not exactly true as he was very popular in Cuba as a whole, perfect proof of this is when the United States tried to overthrow him during the Bay of Pigs, they expected support from the population which did not occur. If Castro was really so horrible, its interesting the people rallied to him in that moment and still today they honor is memory.
@@Henry-Paget For 64 years people have drowned in the Straits of Florida escaping Castro's dictatorship on inner tubes. For 64 years families have been torn apart because the government has restricted who can leave the island. For 64 years opposing political parties have been denied the right to seek office. For 64 years freedom of speech has been prohibited by the government. For 64 years citizens have been imprisoned when they have expressed opposition to government policies. For 64 years Cubans have been denied freedom of the press and freedom of assembly. From 1959 to 1992, religion was outlawed in Cuba. For decades, Cuban baseball players and boxers have been denied the right to make money overseas and return home. Once they left they were banned. Every single block in Cuba has a home dedicated to the Committee for Defense of the Revolution (CDR). The sole purpose of the CDR is to report citizens that do not toe the Communist Party line and this will cost those people their jobs (since the Government controls all jobs). You obviously are not Cuban nor do you have a loved one that was impacted by these atrocious policies.
@@DavidMars You let children have the choice what to eat every day they will probably choose candy, sometimes such freedoms are destructive in uneducated and immature hands. These people who fled may have been morally corrupted according to the ideals of the Cuban leadership under Castro's reign. In a household you will find that the parents make the decisions (usually for what they think is best for the children) but for Cuba it was for the people and the country as a whole. When does a religion become a dangerous cult that penetrates the minds of these adult children? Also the qualities of the religion are to be questioned. We are seeing the Buddhists in countries such as Myanmar resort to violence in order to fight back the Islamic religion (A toxic cult IMO) from infiltrating the country.

Usually, people who lead "revolutions" are from the wealthy class, people who are able to learn and study at school and are not obliged to work for over 12h, a worker cannot think for itself, just as Engels or Lenin, who were part of the wealthy class but had stronger opinions about the social conditions of the majority of the population, the worker's class
In 1959.... Castro still had no idea what direction his country would go to... The fact that the US showed hostility during the last year of Eisenhower merely encouraged him to hire Socialist and Communists in order to consolidate his position. The Cuban Revolution did NOT a have a clear ideological standing like the Russian one until 1961. Nikita Khrushchev said it best in the UN conference 1960: "Fidel Castro is NOT a Communist, but will be one in two years thanks to American pressure".
He invaded with the so called El Che by his side, pure marxist ideologist and you don't think he knew? The only ones who didn't know were the Cuban people that he kept lying to and telling them he was not a communist or a marxist, that Batista would be the last dictatorship in Cuba. Uhu..... @vampirodrako I know Cuba has a rich culture, great music and perhaps one of the most interesting histories in the world. That's why I'm happy to be a Canadian who can freely travel there. I promise you tens of thousands of us will be at the doorsteps of your immigration offices in Ottawa and whatever cities we are able to fly into, begging for asylum. @@jean-claudelol563 I'm sorry your parents lost their hacienda. I'm sure, as you sip lemonade on the beach in Miami, the descendants of those former slaves truly do be wishing they could go back to 1952.
@@javakris You have got to be a communist automaton. What hacienda? My mom grew up in a 3 bedroom house with 8 siblings. My grandfather made his living with a small family plot that he and his kids farmed to sell at markets. My other grandfather had a tiny grocery store, most of his sales were paid with an IOU from local small farmers until their crops came in and they came back to the store to settle their bills months later with not one penny of interest ever charged to them by my grandfather. Both that tiny family farm plot and tiny grocery store were stolen by the communist and my family was left with no means to earn a living. Whatever nonsense koolaid you have been drinking, your synapses obviously stopped firing decades ago. As for slavery, that ended in 1880 and formerly abolished by decree in 1886. Unless you are referring to the fact that we are all slaves to this leftist totalitarian regime that has been choking us and our economy to death for over 6 decades. Most of those small family farms that use to be the lifeblood of the Cuban economy producing food for the population and some surplus for exports, have been sitting there for decades growing nothing but thorny weeds. No food for the people, no food for export, just weeds. Very few want to work under this system, they don’t get paid enough to make it worth it. Everyone is busy with their little street hustles where they can make a little more without working.
Is it necessary to establish a dictatorship in order to have free healthcare? England, France, and Germany each have universal healthcare and each is a capitalist democracy. The Cuban revolution was not just fought for social justice but also to reestablish democracy and human rights lost under Batista.
I always assumed Castro was an evil dictator as I was taught in school, since then Iv seen some things that point to the US being on the wrong side in almost all engagements. This is my first video to find the truth about Castro.
I feel sorry for you because how gullible you are to the propaganda. This is why people like Castro and Mao loved the ignorant souls they called them the clean slates and that they could be molded into anything the dictators wanted.
@Brenda2OOO That is very true. Cuba would be in a much better state than it is right now. The US government is just very stubborn. The embargo has gone on for 48 years, I think it's about time the US got over it.
Like all the languages, it has a little bite of difficulty. I talk about a level basic, for example: when you need to conjugate a regular verb in enghish you have to say: (to drive) I drive, You drive, He drive. But in spanish, you have to chances the way of write the verb: (Manejar) Yo manejo, Tu manejas, Él maneja. Italian and Portuguese is even easier for hispanics because those languages are very very very similar. I study languages, but i´m not a good student jajajaja Thank for write.
at 1.30 in the video, look at the way he says company. Whatever about Castro now, that man really didn't like the idea of big companies or corporations... I do agree there
Really? I left Cuba in 1984, way before the USSR collapsed, and the conditions were just as bad, if no worst. The embargo, thoigh I'm agaist it, is just an excuse used by the Cuban Government. Doctors do bus tables, and beg those who have familly members in the US for help financially.... it's a fact.
Also, Cuba is poorer than many Latin american countries in some ways but in other ways we are much richer: zero drugs, zero arms, good security, good education for free, and free health care, etc. These things are also important in life, not only a mobile phone and levi jeans. I saw the michael moore documentary called Sicko and soon realized we still have many good things in Cuba. Also we are poor but stable. Some are richer but heading towards big bankruptcies. This in Capitalism, no good!

Apart from that, the website has ads which help the owner to earn money. So, no, it is not "the real cuba", and it is something made just to make money, your money, the money you give to the owner of the website, the donations.
@5oclocktea I admire Comrade Fidel as well. He has done much for his country and for socialism. Cuba is much better today than it was under America's control. Fidel shows us that Communism works. He is the most humanitarian president in the world. He walks among the people and asks how he can help them. I dare anyone to name one US president that's done that. Long live Fidel and long live the Cuban Revolution!

Socialism, does not endanger democracy and I can prove this as Tony Blair was a Socialist and Britrain is still democratic and Britain has been a true democracy longer than America, just to let you know.
like half the people here, yes, i must admit i do very much enjoy playing as Fidel Castro on Black Ops. but that's not what is being discussed here. if you Americans bothered to watch a few films ( specifically Che: A Revolutionary Life) and read a few books (specifically Guerilla Warfare by Che Guevara) you might understand that the oppressive Batista regime was the dictatorship destroying lives and bowing down to America, not La Revolucion. America is not the whole world, Americans must know.
Apparently yes, he did not want communism. Che conducted some secret talks with the Kennedy administration to retain the system. This created some differences and friction with Castro. It is said that Castro ended up hating him, and that's the main reason for Che to leave for Bolivia which he tried to take over with 12 guerrilleros.
doug1863, lets be honest. Respectfully, we have armed guards at our borders too. I have seen the wall down at Mexico. The things the militias have done down there are pretty sad. No human being should be 'illegal' whatever country.
Livingrevolutionary: I believe in Socialism But I strongly condemn force labor and a country ruled by a Dictator After the Revolution, Castro should have allowed the people to democratically elected their own House of Representatives and President. Look at the Communist party led countries of Cypress, Moldova, and Nepal with Parlaments Please people... let us support a Communism that is Democratic and has no Dictators Peace
Again, Socialism can be made compatible with Democracy. A Socialist Democracy is a "FAIR" MARKET instead of a FREE MARKET. And with any freedom you need laws and regulations in order to "keep" that freedom. But this is not possible under Capitalism unless you heavily tax the rich, and that's never going to happen. A free market must be fair! And that is where a Socialist Democracy comes in Property unless for "your person" & businesses should be owned and managed by the people (free state)
@vampirodrako I'm not an American... just so you are aware. I can understand why someone from Cuba would not like the US, but most countries are better off because of them.
Castro has been doing nothing but rubbishing his neighbor: The US for half a century . What else did he expect? Raul seems to have stopped his rubbishing. If Cuba is so free, where are the internet users? I never find any....?
@Ludd Zarko go to America and live there. It’s a good time to go move there if you see Capitol Hill. This is only the beginning. Am I the communist? Wait for the history!! 😘
But what's the point of a good education if the average wage in cuba is less than $20 per month. Physicians toss away their education in order to gain hard currency as taxi drivers for tourists. what good is universal literacy if the government choose what you can or can't read?
In the U.S. we are not perfect by any means but we are talking about building walls to keep people out. In Cuba they keep them in with mines and guns but people still escape through sharks and the ocean to get to freedom in the USA.
Cuba is not in misery because of the embargo. Latin America is mostly in misery and there is no embargo. Cuba is in misery because communisom creates misery. And Latin Ame because of huge corruption problems. Cuba has trade with a lot of countries and for the longest time the USSR was maintaining them, SO STOP BLAMING THE AMERICANS FOR EVERYTHING!
Actually there are some Latin American countries who have a better healthcare rating than Cuba. Costa Rica is ranked above the U.S (36th), Chile (33rd) and Colombia (22nd). But this is beside the point. Cuba can flaunt its healthcare accomplishments and education all it wants, but it doesn't take away from the fact that Cuba is a dictatorship, where individual human rights are not respected, with the highest number of political prisoners in the Western Hemisphere.

I think you know not of what you speak fellow man. The reason why what we call communism has failed miserably in history is because it is not communism; these systems established by these leaders in different countries was merely a system to satisfy their petty ambitions of recognition and their failed dreams.
