📝 What is an Index Fund?
An index fund is a collection of different companies on a list you can put your money into that allows you to own portions to each of those companies within one purchase. An index fund is a type of mutual fund or exchange traded fund (ETF) that tracks the returns of a particular market index. A market index is a collection of securities (such as stocks or bonds) that represent a specific sector of a market or economy.
A popular index fund is the S&P 500 that is the top 500 publicly traded companies in the U.S. and is a broad scope of the U.S. economy. On Fidelity, the S&P 500 Index is listed under the "Fidelity 500 Index Fund (FXAIX)".
If you want a deeper scope, you can invest into the Total Market Index Fund that contains many different small, mid, and large sized companies. This is listed on Fidelity as the "Fidelity Total Market Index Fund (FSKAX)".
Why Invest in Index Funds? (ADVANTAGES)
1. Passively Managed:
The S&P Dow Jones Indices research study states that 10.62% of actively managed funds (controlled by professionals) outperformed passively managed (not controlled by professionals). That means roughly 90% of portfolio managers could not outperform passively managed funds. Always looking for the best Return On Investment (ROI).
2. Diversification
If you only own singular stocks and one was to go bankrupt or collapse in share price, you could lose a significant amount. In comparison, if you owned the S&P 500 with 500 companies, you would have much less risk to losing since 1 company out of 500 is a small percentage to the overall investment.
3. Expense Ratio
The cost to owning index fund based mutual funds or ETFs is much cheaper than purchasing actively managed mutual funds since they charge much higher expense ratios and hidden management fees that over the years will significantly impact your results.
Best Fidelity Index Funds:
- DOMESTIC -
1. Fidelity 500 (FXAIX)
2. Fidelity Large Cap Growth Index Fund (FSPGX)
3. Fidelity Total Market Index Fund (FSKAX)
- FOREIGN -
4. Fidelity International Market Index Fund (FSPSX)
5. Fidelity Emerging Markets Index Fund (FPADX)
- BOND -
6. Fidelity Total Bond Index Fund (FTBFX)

1. FXAIX: 40%
2. FSPGX: 20%
3. FSKAX: 10%

I’ve been watching a lot of your videos on Roth IRAs and index funds, and I really appreciate how clearly you explain everything, it has taken a lot of the anxiety out of finances and investing for me. I have a question - if you’re trying to grow your Roth IRA with index funds, do you reinvest your earnings back into the index funds or do you deposit them into the Roth IRA? I’m a little confused on that because I understand how Roths and index funds work separately, but I’m not sure how they work together. Thank you so much for making these videos!
@DannySully
@DannySully 11 месяцев назад
Wow that means so much to me you have no idea. I’m so happy to hear that, thank you! And with index funds in a Roth IRA reinvesting your dividends is optimally to have additional compounding on your investments. If you decide to not reinvest then you will be having cash sit in the account until you take further action. Dividend investing for income is typically for taxable accounts that use it for an income source where a Roth IRA is for max growth since you get the best benefit of all… no taxes on gains!! The function of an index fund is the same whether it is a Roth IRA or a traditional brokerage account. But the difference is your goal. Whether you want an income source from dividends or to see more growth from your investments. I’m not a “financial advisor” lol, but reinvesting is the most logical approach for everything unless you truly want dividend income to use or even live off of. I hope this helps and I’m so happy to hear you are benefiting from my content! :)

Hi!! I am understanding everything pretty well but have one question. When you go to purchase the Fidelty 500 Index Fund it says that it is $130.52. What is this price indicating? I see that you use $100 to invest in it, but how does it work if the index fund costs more than that? Also, with the cash you have "available to trade" that is coming from your Roth IRA, is this because you had that amount in your account, or because this is the interest that you have from that account? Thank you so much for these videos, you're doing God's work.

I will be 56 soon and not sure how my target date looks for me to retire comfortably, especially SSI going away despite my 34+ years of work and may not be able to collect when my FTA arrives. I also started to dabble a bit using Robinhood but need to be more invested in my research in my retirement at work so this helps -Thanks!!

This is a great video! I was wondering if you have a video already explaining how to set up a Roth IRA account and explaining how it works, and how beneficial it is as well. I’ve heard it’s something important when it comes to retirement, but I’m not necessarily sure on the rules that it comes with. Another thing, what’s the difference between Roth IRA and HSA?

Thank you so much! And no unfortunately it has to be either reinvested in the same security, directly deposited to the core account, or directly to another index mutual fund from Fidelity. If you're curious, you can see this by going to manage dividends on the positions page and scroll into the investments such as FXAIX and look at the opportunities for the distributions and where they can be directed.

What are the age and financial requirements to begin investing with Fidelity? And what to you recommend? Loved the video btw tysm :)
@DannySully
@DannySully 5 дней назад
Great question! So you can start with a typical brokerage account at the age of 18. If you are younger than that, you'll have to start a custodial account and have a parent or legal guardian sign off. Roth IRA is 18 but you can earlier as well. And the decision depends on your own situation, and what you have going on! A typical brokerage account is the standard for a regular investing though. Thank you four your kind words, i really appreciate it!

@DannySully
@DannySully 7 месяцев назад
I can not say exactly since it depends on ones own position but I believe whatever makes you most satisfied to have long term and not change thereafter is best. If you do the sp500 only, realize that there are additional stocks like small and mid cap out there to help gain exposure for your portfolio. Overall, I think allocating in multiple areas is the best for an overall portfolio. I hope this helps! Thanks for following my channel :)

Also, I noticed Fidelity Gov. Money Market (SPAXX) appeared randomly in my portfolio. After doing some research, I discovered it’s a taxable account which accrues interest on any uninvested cash that sits in the account. Is this true even though it’s within a Roth IRA (tax free account)? If so, would you recommend “reinvest in security” or “direct to another mutual fund” for SPAXX under manage dividend & capital gains? Sorry for so many questions . I just feel you’re great with explaining so one can understand.
@DannySully
@DannySully Год назад
Hey Nicole, I love the questions thank you so much for reaching out in regards to this. Surprisingly enough, I just uploaded a whole video covering money market funds. The interest you earn will be taxed. But if you are in a tax free account you do not pay taxes. The only way out of this in a taxable account is a municipal money market fund (discussed in video). Where you want it reinvested is up to you and what you personally would like out of it. I'm sorry if I missed anything, please let me know if there is anything else!
