Across 17 years and eight albums, Field Music have become one of Britain’s best-loved guitar bands. They’ve also evolved a unique approach to recording.
In this video, we join David and Peter Brewis in their Sunderland, UK studio as they track a new song from the ground up, explaining the choices they make as they go along. With both brothers equally capable on drums, guitars, bass and keyboards, whose parts will make the cut?
Check out our 2010 interview article with the duo.

Love this band - no vintage tube fetishes, no sniffing nitrocellulose guitar lacquer... just great cardigans, great sounds and great songwriting. Aquatic shop strat is sadly missing here - back in the shop having it's filters cleaned.

I think the fact that these 2 guys do not spend a lot of time on different takes is an absolute testament to their high-caliber musicianship. These 2 are without a doubt modern-day musical geniuses

This is predictably fabulous from the chaps behind the best band in the UK (imho). Informative and entertaining, with top quality music thrown in. And no sooner has the question "what's that unusual Epiphone bass with the f-holes and the dot inlays?" started to form, than answer came there "Rivoli", along with a reason why it might not be a good idea to buy one! They are also two of the most personable guys around, with a clear hunger for information on a diverse subject range, and the intelligence to convert that knowledge into a multitude of musical gems.

Love everything about this. I’ve been a Field Music fan for what feels like forever, and I remember reading about their recording methods at their studio in Sunderland maybe 10 years ago. It’s so gratifying to see them in action! And it’s very cool that they get to make music that honors the labor struggle like this.

Listen to their album Measure.... I was shocked when I heard it the first time last year that I have never heard of this band... it's got to be the best British album in like 20 years or more ... not joking!

@@prodigalus I really don't quite understand how your comment refers to mine.... search for what prodigalus? And even more confusing why your original comment (before the edit) then continued to somehow bring my 'family status' into play? ;-) I got a notification from YT before you changed the wording so I saw what you originally wrote... Anyway, please tell me how all of this refers to my comment! ;-) Back to the subject on hand here: Field Music achieved to somehow release the most potent album in like decades with Measure and managed to pretty much fly under the radar of the discerning listener/ music critique..... unbelievable! That particular album is unquestionably one of the best albums Britain has ever produced... in all of their great music history... the boxes ticked in Measure left me speechless at times.... to listen to that album in my car at full volume is an immersive experience! ;-)

I knew this was my favorite band for a reason, or seven. Brilliant, and can't wait to hear the final mix of this song with the brass band. This session and interview brings a lot of clarity to their sound, focused so much on the drums. Both lads play the kit (same kit!) so well. Please get back to Sunderland often for more FM.

I really enjoyed the studio tour and the tracking. I'm not a musician, but the craft behind the song development and recording is fascinating. The home studio setup is cozy and convenient. When it's 4 PM, maybe a spot of tea with biscuits would be in order before double tracking those guitars 🎸 🤔 😀 👍

Between this and the podcasts, Field Music have told me how they write their songs....I've been paying attention but still can't write a field music song, guess I'll have to just rip them off!😂

ah.. of course)) with everything you showed at the begining it is creative. try to do something with twisted mic, twisted speakers and with 10y old interface, while notebook is lagging at the limit :) sorry... my pain is strong :)

We made our first album on an old Allen & Heath 16-track with four cheap microphones, a noisy zoom multi-fx and a pair of behringer monitors so we're not unfamiliar with that pain. (For our second album we bought two extra microphones and used the toilets under our practice room for reverb)

@@FieldMusicmusic I've only discovered you guys last year (a friends recommendation) and am still on that same album called Measure which is all I am listening to in my car really ... the only thing I do is swap out the CD's from time to time... haven't progressed to anything else you have done as it really can't be better ... I don't know but I believe it's one of the best albums ever recorded.... and the sound is up there with anything... even Abbey Road. ;-)
