CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Defying the threat of foreclosure, Ray (Kevin Costner) listens to Terence's (James Earl Jones) dreamy prediction.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"If you build it, he will come." That's the ethereal message that inspires Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) to construct a baseball diamond in the middle of his cornfield. At first, "he" seems to be the ghost of disgraced ballplayer Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta), who materializes on the ballfield and plays a few games with the awestruck Ray. But as the weeks go by, Ray receives several other messages from a disembodied voice, one of which is "Ease his pain." He realizes that his ballfield has been divinely ordained to give a second chance to people who have sacrificed certain valuable aspects of their lives. One of these folks is Salingeresque writer Terence Mann (James Earl Jones), whom Ray kidnaps and takes to a ball game and then to his farm. Another is Doc Graham (Burt Lancaster), a beloved general practitioner who gave up a burgeoning baseball career in favor of medicine. The final "second-chancer" turns out to be much closer to Ray. That "magical" field in Dyersville, Iowa still draws thousands of baseball-happy tourists each year.

+Nik Kingman yes it has Christian parallels but this is not a metaphor. Baseball is a part of our past and it truly has marked the time. America has changed drastically since the invention of baseball, and every other sport has changed since the beginning of baseball; however, baseball is still the same
@sportsygirl8
@sportsygirl8 7 лет назад
Hayden Lindquist Baseball is not totally the same. They've made changes with challenges, The Buster Posey Rule, the Chase Utley Rule, both very much gray areas and they will here soon have a clock where the pitcher will have 30 seconds to pitch and if they go over it's a ball to the batter, there's 30 seconds now for a mound visit where some pitching coaches have been tossed for arguing. And many more changes have been proposed and if they come into play there'll be a good many changes coming up in the near future.

While many people rightly consider this a baseball movie, this scene always made me feel like the point of the story ran deeper than that. This scene, more than any of the others, made me feel like this was a battle for Ray’s soul, with Terrence acting as the angel on Ray’s shoulder, imploring him to have faith, and Ray’s brother in law as the devil, scheming to get Ray to sell his soul. Best baseball movie ever. I have had the same ball glove now for 37 yrs. It has been restrung a couple of times and i call it my rag. Some people ask why don't i get a new one? The reason is that one glove is filled with so many memories i could never replace it. All i have to do is open it up look at the web and it's like looking at a movie screen remembering all the places i've played, all the catches and the thousands of baseball/softball players, male and female, young and old, that i have played with and against or coached over those 37 yrs. Nothing can replace that ball glove. It's filled with the best times of my life. I don't play or coach any longer but still carry my bat bag in the trunk of my car with me at all times just incase a game breaks out somewhere or someone just wants to play catch. Baseball. If you have never payed it you will never truly understand it. It's Baseball.

As a 93 baby, my first glimpse of Mr Jones talent was of course voicing Mufasa in the Lion King. Then when I was 11, I first heard him as Darth Vader. I was watching this scene last night. And I was reminded why James has set the standard for delivering a speech with his booming sound. Almost like Morgan Freeman and Michael Clarke Duncan. How come the Sandlot couldn’t give me something as beautiful as this?

Ray, people will come, Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway, not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door, as innocent as children, longing for the past. "Of course, we wont mind if you look around.", you'll say. "It's only twenty dollars per person.". They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it, for it is money they have, and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the bleachers, and sit in the shirtsleeves, on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats, somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game, and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick, they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come, Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steam rollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again, but baseball has marked the time. This field... this game... is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be again. Oh, people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come.

@@radconserv68 I find it cute when people think that grammar matters for accuracte expression. If anything, such structures form a barrier between the mind and what is put to paper, grammar is essential for academic writing but for artistic articulation it is always contorted like a tool.
