I watched Field of Dreams last night again. I cannot watch it without crying but it isn't only because of the storyline, it's mostly because of the music. Mr. Horner wrote a score that literally gives us a glimpse of heaven. Who wouldn't cry if you sensed the Divine that was near enough to feel but not close enough to touch. The one constant isn't baseball, although I love the game. The one constant is Jesus, who died and rose again and is sitting at the right hand of God preparing a place for us. "In My Father's house there are many rooms," He said. "I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you with me that you also may be where I am." In my minds eye and in my heart, I can picture Jesus as He finally takes my hand and welcomes me into His kingdom all the while hearing this soundtrack and knowing I have finally arrived at The Place Where Dreams Come True.
Thinking of 🕊Mathew Perry 🕊while listening to this beautiful piece of music, looking up to the sky in my garden.. Feels like the world lost a very Special Friend today.. Fly high & thanks for the memories..May you forever rest in peace & live on in eternal laughter 🕊💙🙏
Yes yes yes. This music is heavenly. The scene with his father is incredibly touching. Along with the background music, it conveys that the relationships in our lives are profoundly important, and once the time has passed, we can’t get the time back. So today, we must humble ourselves, prioritize our relationships, and enjoy the people in our lives as the gifts that they are. That way, as time passes, we will have no regrets. And yes, the one constant is Jesus Christ, who bled and died in our place, so that we can be forgiven when we have messed up our relationships, start fresh, and look forward to eternity in heaven with Him. Thanks be to God, our Savior! ❤
Shortly after my Dad died in 2004, my Mum and I travelled to London for a few days. I went into the Virgin Megastore near Piccadilly Circus, and bought a load of CDs, amongst them this one. On returning home, of all the tracks on the CD, this track really hit home and I played it over and over again. I felt that it was so comforting, and somehow helped me get through my bereavement.
Horner (RIP) was one of the masters of making music to fit the mood exactly. Quite a few of the very moving parts of this scene have been mentioned in these comments. But the part that always makes me weep like a baby is when the haunting minor keyboard chords kick in at 6:12 just when Ray asks John, "Is there a heaven?" And when his father responds, "Oh yeah. It's the place where dreams come true", the music builds to a crescendo as Ray looks over at at his family and decides that "Maybe this is heaven."
One of the greatest films ever made and a score that is gorgeous; 5:05 is sublime - like looking into the heavens and seeing every star on a dark night. This film is a tribute to two of the greatest gifts God has given most of us: Dads and Baseball. When I hear this piece I remember the greatest man I have ever known. I miss you, Dad.
You really get it. No one is ever completely lost to us. Our grief is the false belief that we cannot redeem the past. Of course we can. We can redeem ourselves through our own presence with our children. You got it.
A really nice change in texture. Reminds me of how Silvestri used the acoustic guitar like this for a nice change of pace in "The Real Hero" from his Avengers: End Game score. Speaking of, if you want a nice surprise. Go listen to "The Real Hero" and compare it to his theme from "Cast Away". Very similar compositions.
This film is perfect. A Magical score by Horner. I walked down the aisle to my husband at 5:05 and it will forever be the most perfect spot of music I will ever hear. My real place here dreams are made of ❤️
"And they'll walk out to the bleachers, and sit in shirt-sleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game, and it'll be as if they'd dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick, they'll have to brush them away from their faces".
I keep coming back to listen to this. It's been months now. Simply one of the most stirring, powerful compositions out there. It wakes up emotions and memories in me for which there are no words. Thank you, James Horner, for using your talent so greatly!
The music cue when the scene transitions to show just the sunset above the corn, before Ray and John even come on screen, is enough to get the tears going. It's incredible
An unlikely cult classic. But with a score of this caliber, it makes perfect sense and couldn't be any other way. Elements such as these elevate films from potential mediocrity to something timeless and cathartic. An ethereal, gentle, and at times chilling score. A favorite.
Ryan, I hear you. I’m 62 and my dad died 8 years ago. I can still remember all of those wonderful times when he and I went out and played catch. In fact, it means more to me now than it did then. With two sons of my own, I see how important that time with my dad really was.
I heard this on a classical radio station this afternoon and had to pull over so I could thoroughly enjoy where it was taking me. So many layers. A masterpiece.
Watching the MLB Field of Dreams game between the Yankee and the White Sox and thought of James Horner's majestic score of the original movie. Brought me to tears. He also scored Titanic among so many others. One of the greatest composers of all-time. Died unexpectedly in a plane crash many years ago.
We saw him conduct a live orchestra for Titanic the movie at the Albert Hall in London. James Cameron was there too and came on stage afterwards to congratulate him. It wasn't long after that that he tragically died. Such a loss to the world :(
Man. The Golden Era of movie scores really was about 1982-1999. John Williams and James Horner at their peak and before Hans Zimmer started having every score sound like an imitation of Inception.
Is this Heaven? It's Iowa. Iowa? I could have sworn this was Heaven. Is there a Heaven? Oh yeah. It's the place where Dreams Come True. Maybe This is Heaven.
So heartland American. Transcendent and sweet and profound and how can it not bring tears to your eyes? Reminds me of Aaron Copeland's songs to the American land.
This is one of my all-time favourite movies, and yet I don't even like baseball. It had Costner in his golden period of film making, and Burt Lancaster nearing the end of both his career and life. All wrapped up in a movie about love, loss, sacrifice, anger and redemption. And it's finished off with a magnificent score by the one and only James Horner.
In 1990 I traveled to the FOD movie site in Dyersville Iowa withe my young family. A magical place, a memorable movie supported by a moving score. "Is this Heaven? It's Iowa. Iowa? I could have sworn this was Heaven. Is there a Heaven? Oh yeah. It's the place where Dreams Come True. Maybe This is Heaven."
The theme reminds of me of a "Neverland" story(Peter Pan). Just like heaven, it's so beautiful and realistically ethereal. Makes you believe that there really is an afterlife that we are all bound to go to someday. Reminds me so much of my father. I know his good and gentle soul is in heaven. May he rest in peace
Heaven is what we make of what we have on Earth, mortality is something about humanity that makes us unique, sure one could live forever, but without meaning, but it would bear no fruit to one who has lived fully in a shorter amount of time given to us. The things some may deem small should never be taken for granted. Love what you have and never miss a game of catch with your dad/son. You'll sorely regret it. A full life is one with no regrets like Doc. He completed his dream and returned home. 5 seconds of glory is all you need, rather a wink. That small moment could fill the well of dreams in someone's heart and soul alone. I really hope to make a pilgrimage to this beautiful field one day. This movie should be shown to every generation to come. Baseball is something that really brings people together, no matter what team you back the most. Truly beautiful. We all have our patches of heaven on earth, and they are call baseball fields, our "Fields of Dreams".
I've never seen this movie, but it happened to be on TV a few weeks ago. And I noticed the melody that starts at 3:33 and recognized it. I actually played this in high school marching band my senior year! I loved that particular piece and had no idea where it came from, now I know!
I suspect that in your lifetime, it will come to mean much, much more. I’m a female, estranged from my 84 yr old father for more than 33 years (his choice, divorced my whole family), yet it still strikes a chord with me I guess I’m still hoping for a reunion somehow, someday.
Still one of the most Heartfelt & moving movie musical scores of All Time! I will Always consider this one of the Best in portraying heartfelt emotion in a movie. Very well done.
Tell you what, I've gotten back into 'Our Town'. As good as Copland's score was, this would work easily as well behind that masterpiece of the glorious timeless worth of ordinary America.
A magical theme for a magical film,if there were only fields like this we could go to it makes me want to see my brother again ,taken from us at 18 yrs old when i was 14 ,some 42 years ago If only ! now that would be heaven A very comforting film ,one of my top 3 favourites and drawn back to watch it over and over The meeting of Moonlight Doc Graham in a midnight street ,years after his death is enough to stir the imagination, of what that encounter would feel like in reality ,then as a young man at the side of the road ,the fact Shoeless Joe knew whom he was without asking ,then back to old Doc to help Ray's daughter ,then he has to leave but fulfilled his dream 9:06 " HEY ROOKIE YOU WERE GOOD " Class ,rarely encountered in today's films 🎥- magic
"If I'd only gotten to be doctor for 5 minutes, now that would've been a tragedy" - most significant line in the movie. Burt. Lancaster in his farewell role..
