As a service technician, I can say with full responsibility that working in the field is one of the most difficult, especially if it is raining or freezing.

It's true. And thanks for not saying something like 'my old next door neighbors great uncle knew a guy who was a volkswagon mechanic in 1946'

Imagine having to repair a damaged tank with all the gore inside... Those mechanics had to clean those out also... Not many people know or talk about it.

as a military aircraft mechanic this video really hits home. nobody realizes all the work that goes on behind the scenes just to get things airborne.

So many hours spent maintaining a/c, so few flying!
@tempest411

I'm not in the business, but some of the numbers I've heard with regard for operational vs. maintence time is staggering. Especially for helicopters! I wanna say some aircraft require ten hours of maintenance for every hour in the air. It leaves me wondering how some of these things are even considered practical designs.

My great uncle Berthold Kaufmann led the I-staffel of the 7th Panzer Division in Russia. He escaped the Kurland pocket and was ferried to Denmark. He had many incredible stories of his war experiences and could still adjust the carburetor of my car in the 1980's. Ruhe in Frieden lieber Bertold !

Many vehicles they recovered and repaired had the gruesome remains of the deceased crew members still in the vehicle. So it just wasn’t mechanical work they had to do. The crew spaces would have to be cleaned and sanitized and refinished before the vehicle could be placed back in service with a new crew.

Great Video, interesting and rare photos of a true "Wunder" Worker! These crews recovered and repaired numerous tanks, especially Tigers, putting them right back into combat AND they did it under battlefield conditions and often at night! Incredible!

Great video about a branch of the military who don't get the recognition they deserve , often working under indirect fire and sometimes facing CQC situations later in the war on the eastern front when thee front would be penetrated by Russian tanks with infantry support , amazing what they achieved , real heroes.

The First Panzer Army apparently lost 33 Werkstattkraftwagons (Mobile Panzer Workshop Vans) in the Kemenets-Podolskiy Offensive in March-April 1944. Quite handy vehicles to hold on to and probably more valuable than older-model panzers in the long run because of the specialist tools they have inside them. They also lost 16 wheeled Drehkrankraftwagons ( Panzer Tow Trucks) and 6 tracked ones of relatively the same type according to the Wikipedia page.

With the invasion of USSR June 22, 1941, the German army used equipment from 10 nations. Maintenance was a logistical nightmare, doomed repairs, with ultimate battlefield losses.

Thank you for this wonderful video with actual film footage of work being carried out behind the scenes on these incredible machines, for that era, when you think the horse was the main go to source of power back then , so often in life the work that goes on in the background is not recognised or appreciated, let alone recorded.

Could ,you @WarHistory, also cover other "heroic" maintenance work of German mechanics? Perhaps about mobile gas chambers trucks and buses that were so heavily used that needed hyper care. I'm sure that some fanboys will also call overworked German mechanics as "HEROES" - they worked so hard in such harsh for Ubermensch conditions all over occupied Europe. 3 gas chamber trucks (2 Diamonds, 1 Sauer), between December 1941 and early June 1942 killed 90 000 people - those trucks must have been well maintained, don't you think @WarHistory? P.S.1 Warning: Sarcasm detected P.S. 2 As military historian focused on German Army, WarHistory is fully aware that Wehrmacht was responsible for "logistical" suport for all Eisatzgruppe.

I saw a video a while ago of an American tank repair crew. They said they looked at what the Germans had, and they say that the Americans had way more, and the Germans didn't really have what was sufficient to do what they needed to do in the field. Did anybody else hear the same thing? Could someone elaborate?

tbh i dont care if we were the baddies in terms of the war alone. Those guys really performed a miracle with what they had, absolute bonkers going against two superpowers with an industry unmatched and still somewhat dominate. But its sad what they did in the countries they conquered or even in our own borders. the holocaust and many other atrocities were totally uneccesary
