I'm welcoming our 2 new PRESS sommeliers from the east coast with a full week of vineyard outings I'm calling "Field Trips Week." First stop: MAYACAMAS!
It's day 1 of Field Trips and I'm so excited to take the new sommeliers Jodi Bronchtein and Carey Vanderborg around to some of the most important and notable wineries in Napa Valley. Our first stop is Mayacamas Vineyards which dates back to the 1800's and has produced some of the finest and most age-worthy wine in California. The winery suffered from some damage brought on by the fires in 2017, but the majority of the structures remained unscathed. Today we're looking around this historic site and tasting wines back to 1996. In 2011 the property was purchased and famed Napa Valley winemaker Andy Erickson was named consulting winemaker. While many feared he might introduce new oak and diverge from the traditions of the estate, we were excited to learn that much of what has been since the 1960's is still very much being used today.
For those of you looking to taste, they do a limited number of visits up at their Mt. Veeder estate which can be booked by emailing or calling the winery directly. However, in 2019 a new downtown Napa tasting room was constructed where visitors can enjoy the wines a bit more freely and without having to trek all the way up the mountain. Your field trips always bring a joyful smile to my face, Amanda. What's better than having a glass of wine in your hand while enjoying a beautiful, Napa Valley setting?.... Nothing at all! ;-)

Got a chance to go up in 2016, spring. Magical place, always a fan and was glad to see the change in ownership didn't lead to a change in style. Thanks for all your videos!

Love, the Old World style producers such as Mayacamas and Heitz. What was the significance of the Old Lokoya bottles?

What are your thoughts on the 2014 vs 2015 Mayacamas cabernet sauvignon? Been debating which one of the two to buy

I prefer the ‘14’s to the ‘15’s in general. 15 was a super small, fairly concentrated vintage but I don’t think it offers much in the way of nuance. ‘14 will be the more ageable of the 2.

Awesome video; this series will be epic. Jodi B. has a terrific palate - solid instincts, too. (Saw her in action in Bean-town) I love how Mayacamas really goes against the Napa wine-making grain...fermentation in cement, neutral oak foudres. No wonder it ages so well! Do you think they used that u/g cellar during Prohibition?

Thank you! Jodi is great! Too funny you’ve seen her before! Mayacamas is amazing and i love how they’ve held onto their roots. I’m sure it’s been used for some illicit behavior in the past, one can only imagine 😂

Amanda, which style of Napa Cab do you personally prefer: along the lines of Mayacamas, or something more hedonistic?

Both! But not TOO hedonistic 😆I really enjoy Mayacamas but it’s got to have a little age. I personally don’t enjoy them so young. If it’s hedonistic I don’t want it to have 15 grams of RS or a judicious amount of oak. It’s the most abused term in the book, but balance is key for me.
