I'm welcoming our 2 new PRESS sommeliers from the east coast with a full week of vineyard outings I'm calling "Field Trips Week." First stop: MAYACAMAS!
It's day 1 of Field Trips and I'm so excited to take the new sommeliers Jodi Bronchtein and Carey Vanderborg around to some of the most important and notable wineries in Napa Valley. Our first stop is Mayacamas Vineyards which dates back to the 1800's and has produced some of the finest and most age-worthy wine in California. The winery suffered from some damage brought on by the fires in 2017, but the majority of the structures remained unscathed. Today we're looking around this historic site and tasting wines back to 1996. In 2011 the property was purchased and famed Napa Valley winemaker Andy Erickson was named consulting winemaker. While many feared he might introduce new oak and diverge from the traditions of the estate, we were excited to learn that much of what has been since the 1960's is still very much being used today.
For those of you looking to taste, they do a limited number of visits up at their Mt. Veeder estate which can be booked by emailing or calling the winery directly. However, in 2019 a new downtown Napa tasting room was constructed where visitors can enjoy the wines a bit more freely and without having to trek all the way up the mountain.
