The Meat-Grinder. Dead Man's Hill. The Bone-Mill. Verdun has many names, as it went down into history as a place of death and destruction. Never before did so many light and heavy artillery guns fire on such a small battlefield. It was the end of the classical field battle and instead turned into a 10 month siege that was fought not by flesh and blood, but by steel and chemistry.
We would like to thank the World of Tanks team for their contribution and help with the video filming.

I suspect he would equate modern drone strikes to an artillery equivalent to snipers, and regret how many great officers would die to such things. I suspect somewhere in the back of his mind, he would ask himself 'How can wars even be fought when such weapons as ICBM's with nuclear warheads exist?' I imagine that the potential to simply kill an entire city with a single missile (or a half dozen.) would evoke from him the same reaction it got from Patton. "Wonder weapons, what's so wonderful about them? No bravery, only those left alive and those left dead."

Those astonishing numbers really put things in perspective: "Over 60 million shells would rain down over the battlefields, that's like 6 tons for every meter of the front." Thanks for doing this more in depth story! I love the concept of it and now this episode. Let's keep our fingers crossed for a Sabaton concert in Verdun.

"Verdun! It is above all a battle of infantry. Dug in, under fire, asphyxiated. It's also a battle of devoted anonymous men, the sacrificed who have no story, but who've stopped cannons with their chests. The slow and relentless fight, distressingly bleak, in the mud, among the shell holes, through blankets of poison gas. That is what we had to endure on the right and left banks of the Meuse." - Sergeant André L'Huillier, 151st Infantry Regiment, French Army. Verdun is the biggest Memorial I've ever known. 9 Villages are shooting away. So many people are killed. It is horrifying. I was there a multiple times, as a german guy. And I feel very sad for what is happening there. My grand-grandfather was fighting there. A landscape build by Canons. This landscape never let me go in my mind. Only 303 days in 1916 made this. And people/goverments do not learn the lesson. War is bad, war is false. And the are fighting on and on. Poor world we live in!

1:40 I thought about it once, and I told myself that this famous French "elan" would come unconsciously from a chivalrous philosophical tradition of the Middle Ages. Which was to lead Dantesque Large Cavalry Charges often led by a feeling of almost impetuous convictions and courage. The only noble way to fight for them. But often at the expense of a pragmatic strategy from the 14th century. As we could do the Anglo-Angevin (Plantagenêt Dynasty) during the first phase of the Hundred Years War (Put aside the Knights to set up more longbowmen, trenches filled with piles). What the French (Capetian Dynasty) took longer to put aside. Because it was more cultural and traditional, more than in England. And after that surely lasted with the Napoleonic era. And the Great War started perhaps from this unconscious feeling among the French. However, this War was a new way of fighting, contrary to chivalrous traditions. There it was a War where man left his humanity aside to use weapons, certainly effective, but which goes against moral rules.

Awesome episode, but there is one little problem with it. So, how many days did the battle take? a) 301 b) 302 c) 303
@SabatonHistory
@SabatonHistory 4 года назад
All three are correct, depending on who you ask. The starting point of the battle is pretty much set, but there were some smaller fights going on mid-December when the French were consolidating their new line.

Another wonderful episode. As a person interested in working on military archaeology of the World Wars, I have been long fascinated with the patterns of change in the World Wars. In the Napoleonic era, it was generally accepted that troops would for the most part form orderly lines in the field. This would hardly change during the Franco-Prussian war, which was nonetheless a crushing defeat for the French and showcased the power of the newly-formed German state, which shocked the world as it defeated what was at the time acknowledged as the world's foremost land power. This set the stage for WWI, as the French people quite understandably held a grudge against the Germans, and the Allied powers began to form their tripartite pact out of fear for the new German Empire. (On that note, you could do just about an entire album on the Franco-Prussian war alone, it is very interesting subject matter...) During WWI, the technology advanced far too fast for the generals to keep up with. They were trained in the age-old art of war as it was practised in the Napoleonic era, before the inventions of machine guns, howitzer artillery, Aircraft, gas, flamethrowers, trench warfare, etc. I believe this is is the main reason behind the incredible casualties on either side. As it turns out, standing straight up and walking across a field giving the enemy plenty of time to mow you down with machine guns and artillery is hardly an effective tactic. "Sneaky" tactics such as surprise attacks were considered unchivalrous, as well, and to be avoided on the battlefield. As short as WWI lasted in comparison to WWII, the former actually had a higher death rate than the latter, which I fully attribute to the tenacity of the generals caused by hubris, which allowed the generals to continue using outdated tactics in the face of new weaponry. To Sabaton, the greatest metal band of recent years- thank you for inspiring me to pursue my passion. I'm hoping I'll still be able to see you in concert in Charlotte this September. Please stay safe, and Indy as well- the world needs you. Edit note: If some of this info seems copy-pasted from your other videos, I apologize. I just started watching the videos on this channel and am 3-4 videos in, I probably have not seen them yet.

I kinda gotta quibble with you on the Maginot Line "failing", Indy. The Germans and Italians actually completely failed to penetrate it at all, and it did its job of channeling the German attack to the north. The problem was, the Ardennes were left basically undefended because the French high command completely refused to believe that you could get an army through there. Admittedly with some reason-at one point Guderian and Rommel's entire force was held up for hours by just six French soldiers in a blockhouse at a small river crossing-but they also buried the results of a prewar military exercise where the OPFOR won by going through the Ardennes.
@avidficreader5040
@avidficreader5040 4 года назад
There is a WWII week-by-week special on the Maginot defenses where the TimeGhost crew tour one of the forts at Sedan. The myth that the German army bypassed the Maginot line is disproved in that video, and as Indy said, the Line ran from the Channel to the Med, and Indy is standing on a Maginot fort where many people claim the Maginot line "ended" at Sedan. The WWII channel's double-length episode on the invasion of France and the Benelux countries shows that poor responsiveness in the French command structure, combined with questionable leadership decisions basically led to the preemptive evacuation of Maginot Line defenses on the Meuse around Sedan.

This reminds me Of The battle of La Lys, by the CEP (Corpo Expedicionário Português) that covered the British retreat, that were supposed to cover the Portuguese flanks, that they did not. The Germans surrounded part ofthe Portuguese and attacked, there was a soldier called Anibal Milhaes that held waves of german soldiers along with the injured and somehow he escaped

At the military museum in Dresden, I got to smell this "simulated odor" of what the WWI trenches might have smelled like. The best I can describe that smell is a mix of burning rubber and the nauseating scent of what I can only imagine is an attempt to simulate the smell of rotting corpses and garbage.
