Deer expert Niall Rowantree looks at Scottish red deer and how sika deer are affecting them. He stalks both in order to tell their stories. It's the last in our Aliens & Natives mini series looking at Scotland's four deer species. Plus we have a story about hen harriers on grouse moors. The birds are thriving, which will enrage Chris Packham. H likes it when they are dying so he can blame gamekeepers. It's thanks to gamekeepers they are doing so well.
We have our new survey. This week it's boots. We deliver the results of our survey. And Charlie goes crow shooting on a pig farm in Somerset. David has his usual seat on the News Stump and Charlie's Hunting RU-vid covers the rest of the world of hunting and shooting on RU-vid. It's all in this week's #FieldsportsBritain

Hi team- can we get a balanced piece on the future of mountain hare management including their biology, their function in the ecosystem (not just as a pest), modern counting methods and licensing? Maybe some comment from GWCT and SNH? Fantastic piece from Niall yet again, and beautifully filmed.

Steel shot is some lighter weight than lead and it flies faster than lead. And when I’m shooting steel I don’t have to lead the birds as far as I would from lead. I’ve killed ducks and geese with steel out to 70 plus yards using number fours and mostly number two shot. I’ve killed ducks almost a hundred yards high with a three inch Winchester round with number two shot size steel. It’s better for the other birds around than using lead. And lead shot landing in those pig pens can’t be good if a pig picks up some lead shot while it’s rooting in the ground for food. Great videos and glad to see your controlling those crows.

The same interbreeding that is occuring with the sika and red deer happened in the state's between red wolves and coyotes, it drove the red wolves to the edge of extinction, and know only a few "pure" animals remain

Start as a beater and work your way up. There'll be at least one Beaters' Day in the season (well perhaps not this one due to COVID-19) and you may get the opportunity of some pigeon/corvid control during the summer. Start here - nobs.org.uk

Do you guys have full chokes on the shotguns if you can get over 50 yard kills? The shotgun I use has a semi choke and my wifes father says that it is as tight as normal full chokes but I cant really get anything past 35 meters.

why is that bird in a cage in the middle of the field ?

Thanks for this. It's a Larsen trap. Magpies are territorial. The cage has two compartments and the captive magpie in one will attract other. / Charlie

@@fieldsportstv Although I am pro-hunting, and a clay shooter, I hate traps.
@juleswhicker
@juleswhicker 4 года назад
@@pim1234 I know what you mean. It took me a while to come round to seeing how they fit in, too. I think the place to start is with recognising that if you're serious about protecting vulnerable species by controlling predator numbers, traps are essential, not optional. It's obvious when you think about it: they work 24/7, almost never miss, and never get distacted by their phones. No expensive lessons or kit is required, either: just read the relevant guidance, then place, set, check and clear your traps responsibly in accordance with the law. In results terms, trapping hours knock shooting hours into a cocked hat, especially with sly or stealthy species such as magpies and stoats. There's really no downside with kill traps like the Fenn, WCS tube or Goodnature designs: when properly set all are reliably selective and consistently deliver very quick humane kills. Live catch traps are harder to get your head round because of the potential distress to target species prior to and at the point of despatch. However, live catch designs exist to ensure selectivity -for example, when targeting grey squirrels in areas with red squirrel populations- and for that reason are also the only type of trap permissable for use on avian species. As trapping is essential to effective management, therefore, we have to do the best we can for the target species. This means visiting traps frequently, ensuring that call birds are well cared for and that despatch is carried out in the most humane way possible. The bottom line is that trapping is not sport, nor is it something one does for fun. Instead the rewards lie in the results, and in seeing vulnerable species thrive due to the reduction in predator pressure achieved through effective trapping.
