The territory battle is gonna happen regardless, as young squirrels will need to find their own. As for not eating the food that's probably cause there is an abundance of natural food that will be of more of interest to the squirrels at this time of year. Feeders work best in winter months when there isn't young birds, beach masts, acorns etc etc
Great video and footage with great content Charlie and good to see your father fit and well, enjoyed the video, thanks, thumbs up and greetings from Kiwiland,, Tony.
I have been called in on a permission because of severe bark ringing/stripping in plantation oaks and beech...this was happening prior to my starting work. The permission totals almost 100 Hectares split into five areas. So far (year one) I have cleared 100 + at a ratio of 2 males to each female dispatched. ( I stalk mostly and only bait in the winter) next year will be the real proof whether it is just natural behaviour or dominance.
Hi Charlie. I have both workers and pet ferrets. The pets are all angoras and free roam in the house. They don't really get on with the guys outside, but they share the play area on rotation and all of them have massive hutches with tubes and hammocks
Hi Charlie, would agree a vacuum draws them in. The biggest attraction is the glen behind the feeder, squirrel highway so why wouldn't they stop in a cracking wood. Like a motorway service station. I have a garden beside a glen/shuck I manage and live trap. Owner states only see's them in ones and two's but have trapped and dispatched nearly 20 in less than a year. They use the shuck from a nearby old disused railway through the garden, nab the fruit, eggs and veggies and scarper. The property acts like a cul de sac and the railway is the motorway.
I believe that squirrels are drawn into an area by the absence of a dominant male - but I don't have an issue with that as it allows for more control. If you can't be there all the time, then trap and dispatch. On one permission I have the owner has noticed increase in the songbird population - unprompted they just said "there are more songbirds around". The grey squirrel control is vital for the regeneration of deciduous woodland as identified on the BBC's Countryfile a few months ago.
How come Briton is the only country in the world that's made2 feel bad for hunting/shooting!?!? Where as every where else in the world hunting/shooting is part of there heritage!! And where ment2 feel bad ashamed!!!! Well bugger that I'm load and proud of my heritage!!!
Not all squirrel damage mostly young roe bucks. the squirrel normally chew under branches. A couple stripped most of the bark off a sycamore tree untill they got 'caught'!
It’s sad that we have to make excuses to harvest a gray squirrel that’s 100% a roebuck doing that to the tree I from across the pond and have gray squirrels everywhere and never seen that before the same people complain and get all their meat from a grocery store, and just think it magically grows on trees but I enjoy the content cheers from across the pond
