@@JOEMAMMADRINK40Z Haha, he's not that bad really. I never realized how advanced this bass line really is. He's just the next logical step in the Claypool-Flea-Gould ladder/circle: Les Claypool - Slaps/pops a whole symphony's worth of notes every beat, using all six strings. (often uses two-handed tapping) Flea - Slaps/pops really fast on two strings, usually octave jumps with some hammer-ons/pull-offs. (uses a 4-string) Billy Gould - Plays the same type of stuff as Flea, but much slower, simpler and often using a pick. Fieldy - Does most of his slapping on one string, rarely (if ever) pops. Tunes down his five-string. Actually plays some pretty fast stuff. Occasionally uses two-handed tapping.
@@Dhakadice Dude, Am not an internet fighter/keyboard warrior youtube jockie...........I jus think/belive this guy absolutely SUX. Innovative influental Bass? L-E-M-M-Y. STEVE DEGEORGIO. BILY SHEEHAN. GEDDY LEE. DAVID VINCENT. ALEX WEBSTER. .........CLIFF. he dont belong. this dude is an ass. Posuer. If YOU like him, then go for it I dunt care man. He is undeniably HORRIBLE. FUNDAMENTALS.
People arguing about whether he is good or not just miss the point. He helped Korn have THEIR sound. That bass tone and style is so important to their music. Its not about being a good or bad player, its about contributing to the song.
without his sound korn would have maybe skipped on a lot of the success say had end of the 90s. There are samples where they had versions play live without that kind of bass and it was just not the same.
Yeah it doesn't really matter if he is a great bass guitar player, which I think he is and one of the more innovative ones at that, but he contributed to an iconic sound. Same shit they used to give Munky and Head. Those riffs changed the game in Metal. Same thing with Fieldys bass.
HAHAHAHAHAHA HE DID IT AGAIN! He makes the same mistake on his Behind The Player DVD and that came out YEARS ago. Plus in the DVD he says its a pull off on the A sharp to an Open A. Here it's reversed. I get that sometimes musicians will change things up live but for the sake on teaching can you maintain some consistency please?
Nah, it's that he doesn't understand what he's doing. He plays these bass lines on an instinctual level. It's like if someone asked you to explain how to swallow food. You just do it, there isn't any real though involved.
anyone who uses that as an excuse is a shit tier musician. hes been playing long enough that altering the tempo should have no effect on his playing. you need to understand, this guy dosent WRITE music. he stands there and slaps an open B non stop because nobody can tell what hes playing to begin with.
You don't have to be the best at anything to be in a band. You just have to serve the band and Music. I hear a lot of criticism about his playing. But his clicky, percussive style fits and makes korn stand out.
I don't see why people criticize the sound. If you actually pick it apart, it's quite interesting. Turning the mids down to cradle the guitars and Jonathan's voice is pretty epic.
Seriously one of the most underrated bassists in metal music. He’s definitely largely responsible for contributing to that sound Korn has that is so unique. Him along with head and munky really couldn’t have happened in another band.
i love fieldy's unique bass playing. the whole band is great they hold a special place in my heart after getting through addiction and depression in high school.
As a musician myself I agree with you. There's a funny clip here on RU-vid with George Lynch on Dave Navarro's show (years back). Dave is trying to learn Mr. Scary and George isn't even sure what his right hand is doing on the rhythm part until Dave points it out. Funny as hell.
Christian - Sorry, I'm not sure about the name of Dave's show. It was pretty short-lived. I want to say it was "Spread TV" or something like that? If you search "Dave Navarro George Lynch" it should pop up at the top. It's a pretty cool episode and worth a watch of you're a player.
What kills me about Fieldy is that he's dedicated so much time to being great at slap, but plays it in such a way that the notes are always almost entirely indistinguishable.
@@torben_vp I saw Korn live once at a festival and he slaps so goddamn hard on low open strings that that had to turn him down to the point of everything else basically being inaudible.
I don’t think he’s ever claimed to be a great bassists tho and in a world full of wna be Fleas, it’s nice to have Fieldys there to say yea that’s great and all but I’m here to sell records
@@byah160 stereo upgrade , it's there , it took me awhile , like hed's earlier albums eqed semi normally sound weak as hell but I got pissed and fucked my EQ up one day and my ears changed what they were looking for
I always thought of Fieldy, almost more like a second Percussionist for Korn. Love him or hate him, he's definitely doing his own thing, and you gotta respect that :)
I think we can all agree that there are better bass players out there than Fieldy. But no one does it quite like he does.....NO ONE!!! It's such a distinct and unmistakable sound and style. It's incredibly fun to watch and listen to
I loved this guys playing as a kid. Decades later after studying music I find his all the more fantastic. Great rhythmic sense, smart use of ghost notes, and a style that serves the band very well.
as a musician myself, playing it is 1 thing when things come so naturally. having to break it down for the next person to understand is a skill on its own which most of these guys dont ever have to do.
I always thought Fieldy wasn’t all that great of a bass player, but he has such a unique style in the way he plays that actually makes him a badass bassist lol
In my option he revolutionized the bass playing. Korn is the only band with that distinctive sounding bass to their songs. Very unique. Great job and I’m glad I got to see you guys live in West Palm Beach last week 🤘🏼
I love when ray just starts playing after eating just instinct I love when you can just get into a good rhythm weather you've played it a million times r
I don't know why people rant about his style, it's his way of playing, it's so Korn. He serves the band so well, and this is what a musician have to do when in a band.
I was thinking the same. I'm a huge Korn fan but every time they get Davis on an interview always have this dark aura, even when he's making jokes or talking frivolous stuff. Fieldy is always chill and bright about everything.
Me too! I know nothing about how to play bass or what's considered technically "correct" mind you. I just love how slap bass sounds. I've always loved Les Claypool (Primus), too.
Also a lot of nu-metal bands came out after Korn and while they sounded awesome too, they were missing Fieldy style slap bass that added juuuust that lil extra bit of percussion and heaviness that solidified Korn's sound.
@@MonsterJuiced Dude... I know you're a probably a Korn fan and all. Not knocking you. I used to like them a lot when I was younger. But as a bass player I can easily tell you that anyone who plays bass for 6 months or so can do this. He fit Korn well and sounded good with them, but let's not act like their actually playing anything technical. This bass line is extremely easy.
Produce more. THIS IS HOW GUITARISTS TALK. We repeat ourselves, use numbers, refer to strings by their standard name even in drop A, and make it sound so difficult you'd think we were giving a nuclear launch code. For a bonus, we also randomly state what's going on with us physically (allergy). This was very refreshing and down to earth.
Fieldy gets a lot of flak, but his style is perfect for Korn, and sounds great. He's certainly not the greatest bass player (this video really makes that clear haha) but he has a unique sound that fits perfectly into the music he makes, so what does that matter?
@@Owen-ne6pe Are-you-deaf? Name me 3....just three funk slap snap crackle pop jams that this goofball idiot junkie is on par with. Serious guy, are you deaf? Do you own an instrument? How long have you played? 1,2,3,4........ Do you HEAR how crappy this moron is? THE COMMENT PRAISING ARE THE EPITOME OF 'POE'S LAW'. He is TERRIBLE!
Wrong. Fieldy is a legend because KoRn is a legend. Joke about him all you like, the fact is he is a real bass player and suggesting otherwise is just a logical fallacy. I've tried my hand at the bass, and don't progress often or get to practice much. I know what a non-bassist is like - me. I'm nowhere near Fieldy. If your joke is only consistent when applied to a specific group (in this case your "music circles"), then it's not always true. It's only true in your limited context, in which you heckle and sneer down your nose at anyone who isn't trying to be some generic Gorguts rip-off.
His facial expression of complete *the hell am I trying to do again?* when he attempts to play it slow at 1:49 after saying "it's really easy" killed me.
Fieldy may not have the best music theory in the music industry. But god damn the man is creative as hell with his bass lines, and can play bass better than most bassists out there. He rivals Flea with his style of slap playing, and adds his own signature style when he plays. Dont hate the man because you've never picked up an instrument yourself, and wish you could be doing what he's doing. My man's got skills, and has the track record to prove it.
I love fieldy's clicks tone I myself am a percussion bassist so I play a lot of heavy groovy slap like fieldys himself lol I also play in the same tuning as him and love the low sound I prefer it over using I hat using mid to me it ruins a bad but that's just my opinion fieldys tone is so unique because you don't see many bassist bringing a new style of bass into this world anymore I don't any band that has his clicky tone
fields does suck. sorry. there's thousand of more talented musicians that will never receive recognition but it's whatever. I loved Korn when I was young but as you grow up and mature you begin to realize that lack of skill.
Fieldy is one of the most creative and genuinely talented bass players ever. Same goes for everyone in Korn actually. What an immense collection of talent and creativity 🤯 still unmatched till today
I think it solely has to do with the way it was recorded. I mean, it was direct to camera audio recording. If they used mics on the amp and then used that sample and sinc it with the video like most musicians do on YT, then it would not sound horrible as a lot of people rant about. Being able to play an instrument is way different from being a sound engineer.
I know nothing about music or muscial instruments but I know that distinct sound that Fieldy has. I don't think anyone has been able to replicate or even tried to replicate that signature bass work that made Korn stand out back in its rising days.
@user-cw2pb9zf8j well when it comes to bass community they are not so appreciated. Many people who already are fans of numetal yes. But I had plenty of bass instructors tell me other wise...
This just goes to show that the ability to accurately break something complex down is a skill. And also, to progressively build something up, 1 step at a time is also a skill. Annnnnnnnnnd, not everyone has these skills.
