April 4, 2009: A ferocious battle between a Kestrel and a Jackdaw! The Jackdaws previously destroyed the Stock Dove nest in the nest box. But claiming this space won't be so easy. The Kestrels, who have previously nested here, want to return to their home.

Amazing that it was actually the jackdaw gripping onto the kestrels feet. I'd have expected it to be the other way around, and no doubt the kestrel has much stronger legs and feet but the jackdaw always managed to grip it in the perfect spot, above the claws and just on the "ankle". There was nothing the Kestrel, with its stronger feet, could do about it. It's like a martial arts special hold, haha. EDIT once in the hold the Jackdaw also pecked and pecked the kestrels controlled foot and leg. This is a bird of prey's most valuable asset, he knew where to hurt it

It knows the strength of the Kestrel....therefore has been attacking the claws. Very smart

Jackdaws are whip-smart birds, quick thinkers and being Corvid they are in the most intelligent bird family. In a fight you would want to subdue the danger points of your attacker as efficiently as possible. This Jackdaw is doing exactly that. Good Observation, props!

Wow such a brave jackdaw. Rescued one many years ago, a most intelligent creature & had the most sapphire blue eyes & a crown. Always remember the lovely scent of its feathers. Once recovered it returned to freedom, yet would visit me to say good day time to time. Just got called to the garden by a blackbird in distress, asked him what was up, he screeched & turned his eyes to the ground, there was a sparrow hawk. As soon as our eyes met it flew away. Dear black bird was making such a racket.

Daryl Kemp Corvids are incredibly smart birds. They are definitely not cowards. It’s called team work. This is how they operate. They don’t have huge talons like bop so they use safety in numbers to drive away other birds to protect their nests and chicks and also to scavenge and take food from another birds kill.

Brilliant footage, and proves that corvids can pack a punch! If I was the size of the kestrel, I would certainly not like to be hit by that beak! I also like how this illustrates the animal behaviour principle that the one with something to lose fights the hardest. I was surprised to see that most of the time, the jackdaw had a foothold on the kestrel, not the other way around. There is a kestrel box on my local nature reserve. The worst offendors there are grey squirrels.

I have studied Jackdaws just from my garden as there are lots of them. They are without doubt the most intelligent of all birds.I have seen them fight off Sparrow Hawks who don`t give in easily but are outwitted by the Jackdaws. They form a posse when they are threatened and hit the skies like Spitfires to ward off intruders. They nest in my chimney every year and are more than welcome. When the young finally pop out of the chimney they are almost fully grown. When I put food out the gulls swarm around fighting with each other while the Jackdaws just pick up three or more pieces and float off and leave the Gulls to it.Jim.

@@STHFGDBY "A mans home is his castle and will defend it at all costs." -- Ambiguous. What is "it"? The castle, or the home? "and will defend it at all costs" -- Again, ambiguous. What, or who, will defend "it"? The man, or the home? The problem isn't that I need meds, but rather that sooner or later, I'm going to get into a condition where I *will* need meds, should I have to read more of such incomplete, ambiguous and completely unclear sentences. Here it's still rather easy to understand what actually was meant, but people who are so awfully lazy with formulating their sentences tend to be even more lazy when it comes to explaining really complicated processes or circumstances. Then it becomes a real pain to try to read and understand, so it bugs me off, when I come across too much of that kind of stuff on a single day. Well, to be fair, perhaps some people aren't doing it deliberately because of laziness, but because they're being under meds. 😈

i want to share two observations about Jackdaws: 1. once i walked in between houses in my neighborhood where pigeons usually hang out seeking food and one such birdy didn't notice me approaching him (unintentionally) from his blind side: 3 nearby Jackdaws started to "scream" at pigeon to warn him about my approach... 2. i saw a crow chasing a sparrow in a flight (it looked like he had bad intentions) and then suddenly Jackdaw flew by and hit that crow to distract his attention so sparrow got away from the crow... not many people would intercede for a weaker ones nowadays...

They took in some grass like "So we're moving in Now! We're just going to sit on this ledge and wait for you To Crack! Like your your eggs will as soon as you leave to go get a drink. >:) Thirsty yet?" But with the Kestrel ....Yeah NO! The Only way to win was an all out fight! So WoW! Talk about fearless! And going For the feet Because your getting close to those Talons! Gutsy! And the Wings! The Poor Kestrel it had a look of disbelief on it's face!! At one point in the battle when the Kestrel was on top of the Jackdaw I could tell by his screams that the Kestrels claws dug home and deep into the Jackdaws body. Kestrels have a very strong grip in their feet. So it wasn't all Jackdaw winning. If the Kestrels mate had joined her together they could have prevailed. It looked like he just wanted to mate with her when he flew in briefly. Making a couple of more bird boxes would provide extra homes for all the birds that want to use them. Make the diameter of the entrance hole no more than 3" across then larger birds such as the barn owl will not be able to enter. I have made several bird boxes for Kestrels and they seemed to love the homes I provided, using them year after year.
