Do you want to be able to heel & toe smoothly like a pro?
In this video, following on from Part 1 (rev matching), I take you through what you need to do with your right foot to heel & toe downshift, demonstrate different techniques, and give you plenty of things to think about which will hopefully make you a smoother and better driver.
I hope you enjoy this and find it useful...please leave any comments or questions below...

A very good video. When I started to learn heel and toe, about half a year ago, I got through similar steps as presented on this video. Of course I'm still practising and learning but at this point I'm able to usually correctly heel and toe. I'm not perfect at this, but it works more or less fine, to master it I have a very long way ahead. In my case it took me about 2-3 weeks to be able to start trying to actually heel and toe while driving. In the beginning I was practising while car was stationary. I have important advice for beginners (similar to me when I was starting to learn this technique), as Mark said be safe and careful while practising. In some cases it is hard to get use to new technique and maintain constant pressure on break pedal. In some cases (at least in my case at the beginning) you may press break pedal too hard, or harder than you wish to. Of course in that case car will slow down rapidly, so as Mark said make sure that until you learn the basics and until you feel comfortable make sure that while practising you don't have other cars behind you (or those cars are at least far away behind you). Also practising while stationary is very helpful, it kind like lets your muscles memorize the movement you need to do while heel and toe. I remember that at the beginning I was practising each day for 2 weeks. When I got to the car before going to work I tried to move my feed from gas pedal to the position over break pedal that will let mi heel and to and I did a blip of throttle. Next I moved my feet back on gas pedal and repeated. It is quite important especially if you got used to cover whole break pedal while breaking. That is because you muscles (or brain or anything) kind like remembers this movement. So I repeated that a few times in the morning and another session was after work when I got to the care before driving back. So good luck and have fun to anyone that is going to introduce this technique into it's driving as it brings lots of good things for your car, safety and your passengers should feel more comfortable ;)

I learned heel/toe braking in Iracing and it works perfect, but after your videos I actually understand better -what- I'm doing. Thanks:)

Great video, very comprehensive and practical, my problem is when blipping the throttle, braking force changes, it caused juggle

+Joey Gu The only way to overcome that Joey is to practice it over and over and over again. Keep at it!

One more question, imaging that you are on the track, when you speed up at straight, there is 2nd gear U turn at the end, what are u going to do? Brake plus sequenced down shift from 6 to 2, or hard brake plus 6 to 4, then 4, 3, 2?
@MarkCup70
@MarkCup70 7 лет назад
On the road I'll miss as many gears as I have to...I brake until I'm at the right speed and then I select the gear I need to accelerate. If that's from 6th to 2nd that's what I do. On track it's completely different...it's all about rhythm and consistency...and I know what I need to do when braking hard and going down one gear, it happens naturally and without thinking. Missing a gear and going from, say, 6th to 3rd is much harder to get right. So I always, and you'll find almost all professional racers, go down through each of the gears as it's much easier to keep everything smooth and balanced when shifting down single gears.

For me is better to learn fully on the brakes. The other is very easy but many cars, especially nowadays, don't have a good pedal position/configuration for that technique by using the middle brake only. And full brake is better for braking itself too. You have to learn this correct way and no car resist your technique 😂

I have a ‘14 Fiesta, and using H&T is quite difficult since the gas pedals are lower than the brake pedals. (seems too focused on track use)

Yeah a pedal mount is a must for the Focus and fiesta.

What do you do when you have to press the brake pedal harder so it's not in the same position relative to the throttle pedal?
@BensCoffeeRants

Is the proper technique to row through ALL the gears like you did in your first example, or is it fine to just downshift from 6th to 2nd if you're slowing down a lot and then speeding back up.
@MarkCup70
@MarkCup70 7 лет назад
When day to day road driving I mostly shift using the IPSGA system. This means I take the right gear once I know what one I need having adjusted my speed. If that means a rev-matched block shift from 6th to 2nd, that's what I do. On track or when on a spirited drive I like going through the gears; judging rev matching while H&T shifting I find tricky for block changes...I find it much easier and more natural to H&T rev match going down single gears only.

The blip, before or after the shift?

At the same time as the shift.

Are you using stock brakes/pads? I ask because I found the stock pads have a really strong initial bite which meant applying light braking whilst using heel/toe was very difficult. However, I changed to Ferodo DS2500's all around and they aren't as strong when cold/initial bite, but do not fade under high temps. This made it a lot easier to heel/toe when only applying light braking.
@MarkCup70
@MarkCup70 7 лет назад
I could have written the exact same as you did Alex. Standard brakes are over assisted and far too grabby. DS2500s have that lower initial bite but grab hold of the disc hard when heated. I ended up settling on EBC Yellowstuff as my pad of choice. They wear quickly but are half the price of DS2500s.

do you need to push the clutch to the stop when changing gear, clutch control video next
@MarkCup70
@MarkCup70 7 лет назад
I've never really thought about it...I just press it down to disengage and then bring it back up to re-engage. I could probably press it down less...but then I run the risk of not fully disengaging the clutch and that would be a bad thing!

Did you change the OEM pedal box in order to heel-and-toe more easily on that car?

@@MarkCup70 all the reviews that I read about the ST200 or the ST182 indicate that the position of the pedals makes it difficult to heel-and-toe with that car. But it seems to be really no problem at all in your video. I would have to try before I buy one I guess.

@@lesrallyesdelamarterie pedal spacers are widely used to lift the accelerator pedal slightly. Which is awesome for road use, but you wouldn't want it to be too high for track use.

Hi can you block change whilst heel and toeing? I.e. 6th to 3rd etc?
@MarkCup70
@MarkCup70 7 лет назад
Yes you can (I do it at 1:35 in the video going from 4th to 2nd)...but as with basic rev matching it's a little harder to perfect. Why? Going down one gear after another you always need to raise the revs by a similar amount, say, 1,500 rpm, so the blip you need tends to be constant from one gear to the next. If you're dropping two or three gears with one shift you need to gain a whole load more revs...so unless you know your car intimately it's very easy to mis-match the revs giving you a jerky shift. I believe in the adage "the less you have to do the less chance you have of making a mistake"...so on track one block down shift instead of two should make sense...but because getting the revs right dropping two gears at once is that much harder you increase your chances of making the mistake you're trying to avoid!

I have a 2007 Ford Fiesta TDCI and I find it really hard to heel and toe mainly because the gas pedal feels awkward to reach while breaking possibly because they are kinda far from each other. Any suggestions?
@MarkCup70
@MarkCup70 7 лет назад
Hi Deo. Have you tried twisting your ankle like in the second technique I showed? Doing that you should be able to bridge just about any gap between the brake and throttle pedals. it won't come naturally though as it won't be a movement you're used to doing at all while braking...hence me stresing the bit about practice, practice, and more practice...try it when stationary at first though.
@MrDaves95
@MrDaves95 7 лет назад
MarkCup70 yes in fact that's the only way I can reach the gas pedal. The thing is my right knee hits the lower part of the wheel (even when it's at it max hight) and that's why it feels awkward to reach the gas. Maybe I have to try to find a better seat position. Also the slow gas response doesn't help either. Strange how fords have such a slow response time regarding the gas pedal.
@MarkCup70
@MarkCup70 7 лет назад
It does sound as though you may be a little cramped in your position. Play about with your seat settings and give it a go...you have nothing to lose from trying. Agreed on the throttle response...I'm hoping my RS will be much sharper!

From looking at pictures of the ep2 pedals online they look close enough to bridge the gap. Which part are you struggling with or how are they not working for you?
