+Daan892 And even if it wasn't an originally British term....so what? Why on earth do some Brits feel so entitled to lecture other English-speaking countries over what words they should or shouldn't use, especially considering the USA is just a minor, barely registering player in the world of football/soccer. Americans have something else called football (so do a couple other countries for that matter), which is by far and away the nation's most popular sport. Let it go.

@chrisosullyo91
@chrisosullyo91 8 лет назад
+Kellen Hunter-La Voy I know, and you're right - the conversion isn't the slightest bit strange. In fact, it's quintessentially needed. I just have a comic affinity for delayed reactions; one example being when someone doesn't quite get the punchline of a joke, and you can see the gears working in their head trying to figure it out... then the penny FINALLY drops. It really hits me hard for some reason, sometimes more than the actual joke! :')

Now, Qatar banned alcohol being sold in stadiums for the 2022 World Cup and suddenly FIFA isn't making them step back on that.

See this is why I love John Oliver. In your traditional American talk show, such an issue will never, ever be brought up. But Last Week Tonight is just amazing. Yes, our health care system sucks, we're billions of dollars in debt, and neither the Democrats nor the Republicans inspire confidence in anybody, but we often forget about problems abroad, and why we should actually care about them. Thanks to this show, in addition to the many problems at home, we've learned about an Indian election, the gay debate in Uganda, a push for Scottish independence, right to be forgotten, a far right in Europe, a Hungarian internet tax, an inept Thai monarchy (and their efforts to curb speech against it), Doug Ford in Toronto, Tony Abbott in Australia, Francois Hollande in France, and yes, the dark side of FIFA. All done in a humorous manner that I find funny, and if you don't find it funny at least you'll know a little bit more about the world by watching this show. Keep it up, LWT.

Colbert for sure, but if you watch Jimmy Fallon, Jon Stewart, David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, etc., their talk shows definitely lean more towards things that are going on here. Also, The Colbert Report doesn't run anymore. What got me about Oliver was that he was bold in covering the Indian election. In just his first season, he ventured a lot into international politics, whereas Colbert took some time to do that. Guess Englishman are more aware of foreign politics than we are.

notbobby125 Very true. With the World Cup in Brazil many people were upset that the government was spending these ungodly sums to build these facilities for the benefit of huge multinational corporations, despite the enormous problems facing the country such as the high cost of living (food, shelter, transport, healthcare) as well as the corruption already present in government. There were full on protests as these problems were being deliberately ignored by the media to keep the spotlight on the games and hide any negative effects. Even with the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, many Aboriginal groups were forcibly moved so the Olympic Village could be built, all for the benefit of, again, the multinational corporations who sponsor the games.

There are 100 people that could change it immediately. If the top 100 football players in the world banned together and said fuck FIFA we won't play in the world cup unless shit gets changed.....shit would change. Because of the pressure from those players, but also because of the pressure from fans since nobody would want to watch the world cup without the best 100 players involved. Despite all of the money they give to charities for tax purposes.

Rogerio Ap Silva de Andrade With respect, the world cup is drawing the corruption and inequality in Brazil into the spotlight, so not just Brazilians but the world can see it. If this was a ploy by your government to distract everyone, it was a terrible idea. And yet, maybe now the problems are so clear, Brazil's next election will be its most meaningful one yet, as people will vote for parties that focus on corruption and actually have a plan to deal with it.
@CarlosCavalcantiJ
@CarlosCavalcantiJ 10 лет назад
Ryan Masad With all do respect, you are very naive to think that the world cup will bring "all the corruption and inequality" in Brazil to the spotlight. Do you see ANYONE talking about corruption and/or inequality today, the opening day of the WC? It´s clear you still have a lot to learn about how the world works. It wasn´t a terrible idea: it was a brilliant ploy, and it will work, like it´s already working. Thanks in no small part to the cup, they will remain in power for a bare minimum of another 4 years, probably 12. And yes, people in Brazil will vote for parties that focus on corruption and actually have a plan to deal with it: those parties want even more corruption, that´s why their focus is on corruption. And their plan to deal with it will be that they do all the corruption, so there´s no enough money for anyone else to rob.

World Cup in Qatar is fucking absurd. Playing football in piece of land that is surrounded by sands, I'd rather play beach football in Brazil. Too corrupted. I love football, I love the game. But I hate modern football!! Too corrupted and most of the companies that sponsors the World Cup questioned FIFA why the World Cup will be held in Qatar except for Emirates Airline. Why would FIFA chooses Qatar, a country that does not have a national football team and does not have any footballing history, to host the World Cup? Because they want money. I will not be going to watch the 2022 World Cup if it is going to held in Qatar unless they change the host.

It should be mentioned, that there actually is another Sepp... His full name is Sepp Piontek, and he is a great great man! He is a German football manager, who helmed the Danish national team in the 1980es and in the process turned them from amateurs (litterally) into one of the biggest surprise upsets of that decade, even though he was their first full time professional manager... He brought forth both a semifinal (lost to Spain in a penalty shootout) in the '84 Euro Cup and a clean sheet of prelimenary victories in the '86 World Cup (one of which was a crushing 6-1 beatdown of Uruguay, one of the premier South American teams of that era). In the qualifiers they took out such giants as England (sorry John...) in 84 and the USSR in 86. 6 years later, they won the Euro Cup of '92 on the foundation of selfbelief and professionalism, that Sepp Piontek had introduced. It is indeed a terrible shame, that he should be so unfortunate as to share his given name with Blatter... And I'm somewhat sure, he never stabbed anyone in a bar fight...

FIFA is as bad as ever and everything said about Qatar here was proven true. Between 2010 and late 2020 over 6,500 migrant workers from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka have died in Qatar.

FIFA is a good example of how an organization that get too much power turns into something evil. I'm glad that I'm not a soccer fan, I don't envy dealing with the ethical dilemma of wanting to watch the world cup, but not wanting to enable and partake in the evil (which everybody who watches the world cup does).

That's a bit naive Michael. If you own ANYTHING manufactured in China/Pakistan/India/Mexico (clothes, iPhone, car, sunglasses, TV) you're already partaking in evil and lining the pockets of American/European/Asian mega-corporations that use slave labour to manufacture and assemble their products.
@Kazarnowicz
@Kazarnowicz 10 лет назад
CaptainBungonia I know there are many ways of rationalizing your contribution to FIFA's evil. One such is your tactic: but everyone else (including me) is already contributing in other ways, so this won't make a difference. What you're doing is pointing a finger at another problem and saying that since that problem exists, this problem is okay.

Michael Kazarnowicz Well, saying that people whom enjoy watching the world cup are partaking in evil, is like saying that driving on the highway looking on billboards is the same. It would help everyone closing their eyes would it? It's a religion.

TicTac MentheDouce Well, John Oliver used to work at The Daily Show with John Stewart on Comedy Central, which is a very good show too. Stewart took 6 weeks off to work on a movie in the middle-east and John Oliver got to host the show in his abscence. Then he quit and after that people are crazy about him and he really deserves. HBO giving him an own show is really the best thing that could happen.
